Chapter 1468: Epilogue 2: Yingjun and Yu Xi

April 16, 2025, Imperial Hospital maternity ward, 10 PM.

"Lin Xian, we really should be leaving."

Gao Yang tugged Lin Xian’s arm and reminded:

"For safety’s sake, we must sleep in the Hibernation Pod before midnight to prevent infection by the virus. No one knows exactly when the virus will start spreading; we can’t push it to the limit."

Lin Xian nodded and placed the swaddled Yu Xi on the bed, next to Zhao Yingjun.

Then he stood up.

Walking toward the ward door with Gao Yang.

The short path seemed like the longest they had walked together, each footprint marking a separation of life and death spanning over 200 years.

Gao Yang’s nose instantly tingled, and he wiped his eyes.

He turned back.

Looking at Zhao Yingjun, Yu Xi, Angelica in the room behind, his voice choked:

"We’ll miss you."

He could no longer hold back, furiously wiping his eyes with his large sleeves.

"You don’t have to be so sentimental, Gao Yang."

Zhao Yingjun looked at Gao Yang and Lin Xian, quietly clenching the fist beneath the covers, pressing her lips:

"We’re just in different eras, yet doing the same work, all fighting for humanity’s future. In essence, we’re the same, never truly separated."

"So, don’t miss us—"

Zhao Yingjun’s gaze was firm, a resounding voice:

"You are us."

...

The two heavy footsteps gradually disappeared down the hospital corridor, growing distant, no longer audible.

Zhao Yingjun’s fists hidden under the blanket were clenched, uncontrollably trembling.

Finally.

The long-repressed tears at the corner of her eyes burst forth...

Weeping quietly.

Angelica was terrified.

Though she hadn’t interacted much with this woman, she admired and deeply respected this great wife and mother.

But she never imagined.

The tears, such a thing, would one day appear on Zhao Yingjun’s face.

"I’m sorry."

Zhao Yingjun whispered, lightly tapping her sleeve at the corner of her eye:

"Actually... I’m not that great."

Angelica felt a pang in her heart:

"You could tell Lin Xian, if he saw how upset you are, he would definitely stay!"

However.

Zhao Yingjun shook her head:

"That’s why he can’t see."

She wiped away the tears and smiled; she was once again that spirited, proud, and confident woman:

"I’m just unwilling, just sad, but I am very clear in my heart about what I am doing."

"Lin Xian cannot stop, nor can he stay here... I told him long ago, his unique vision, his unique ability, exists for this unique purpose."

"Clearly, if the future holds any way to defeat that World-Ending White Light and save humanity’s future, only Lin Xian might have that ability. This is... the task he must accomplish, the responsibility he must bear."

She turned her head, looking at the tiny Yu Xi in her arms:

"I promised him, he will protect the world, and I will protect Yu Xi. A baby without a father will still have a mother; but a world without its sole Savior... cannot wait for a second one."

Angelica tiptoed around the bed, approaching the swaddle.

Inside, the baby girl with black hair covered in vernix remained still, peaceful:

"Is little Yu Xi asleep?"

"Should be."

From Zhao Yingjun’s position, she couldn’t see the baby’s eyes, so she casually replied:

"Probably asleep, otherwise how would she be so quiet?"

Afterward.

Curious, Zhao Yingjun shifted her body, along with the equally curious Angelica, to look straight at Yu Xi’s face.

"Huh?" "Ah?"

The two exchanged glances.

They saw that little Yu Xi wasn’t asleep at all, but rather had her clear eyes wide open, gazing straight at the air ahead.

Uncertain of what drew her gaze so steadfastly.

Yet, clearly.

Other than air, there was nothing in that direction.

Moreover... a newborn baby, with very poor vision, can only see up to a few dozen centimeters clearly, definitely not that far.

Zhao Yingjun, a first-time mother, was somewhat puzzled, also a bit worried.

She extended her palm, waving it in front of Yu Xi’s sight, trying to interrupt her focus, and at the same time... testing whether the child’s eyes had any issues.

Unfortunately, it had little effect.

Little Yu Xi just quietly blinked, staring at the empty direction, earnest and unwavering.

Zhao Yingjun followed her gaze upward, also looking in the same direction.

Nothing at all.

"Yu Xi..."

Her brows lightly furrowed, stroking the cotton fabric outside the swaddle:

"What are you looking at?"

...

Outdoors.

A scenic, lush small grove.

Yu Xi, newly entered elementary school, with a red backpack, a cleaning robot stuffed inside, stood in front of a small mound with Zhao Yingjun, bowing their heads silently.

This small mound was the grave of the Pomeranian VV.

The dog that had accompanied Yu Xi since birth, an extremely important family member. The fluffy Pomeranian watched as she gradually grew up, while it aged with time.

Dog’s life is short, generally around a dozen years.

When Yu Xi was born, the Pomeranian VV was already ten years old, able to accompany Yu Xi from babbling to carrying a small backpack...

It truly tried its best.

This morning, the Pomeranian VV didn’t wake from its sleep, or rather stayed in its dreams forever.

Yu Xi held the cold VV and cried for a long time.

Finally.

She and her mother came to this beautiful grove, digging the soil themselves to bury VV.

Even though she was only six years old.

But she knew clearly that this little mound would soon flatten after two heavy rains;

And soon after two autumns, it would be completely covered by fallen branches and leaves;
