Chapter 374: The Attack: infiltrating the Base[7]
Currently at the entrance of the large eastern base, several refugees from other camps or those from other parts of the wilderness were being inspected by the guards before being allowed inside.
Dressed in torn and dirty clothes were none other than Sniperbowlegend and Alice. The two had wrapped their heads with worn turbans and carried a heavy bag filled with grains and other seemingly unimportant items they had scavenged in order to blend in with everyone present.
Furthermore, they had also rubbed animal waste and spoiled grease on their skin, ensuring that they reeked terribly just like the others around them. It was something Alice had been strongly against at first, but in the end she had no choice but to comply.
She could not help but wrinkle her nose as she cursed under her breath while they slowly walked toward the gate where the guards were stationed.
The line moved slowly, and before long it was their turn.
Sniperbowlegend, having been in several situations like this in his past life, remained relatively calm. Alice was no different. In fact, the teenage girl was even more experienced than the older archer. As an assassin, she had already completed several missions under extreme conditions.
Still, it did not sit right with her to smell this bad.
After some time, they reached the front where the guards stood. The guards looked at the two with narrowed eyes, their noses wrinkling in obvious disgust.
Both displayed a forced and submissive smile, which for some reason irritated the guards even more. Their belongings were checked quickly before the guards proceeded to conduct a body search.
Both noticed immediately that the two guards were subtly competing over who would be the one to search Alice. A subconscious gleam of disgust flashed through their eyes as they clearly saw through the kind of dogs these people were.
One of the guards let his hands roam across her body, deliberately touching places he had no right to. Even though she was boiling inside, she did nothing.
The guard wore an expression of satisfaction as he groped her chest, waist, and hips roughly.
Alice bit her lip, resisting the urge to kill the stupid human on the spot. A faint killing intent leaked out of her body.
Quickly, she activated the killing intent suppression skill she had received from Gabriel. The magic dispersed her intent instantly, before the guards could sense anything unusual.
The guard spent far longer than necessary on her before finally stepping aside and allowing them to enter. As they passed through the gates, she could not help but give him one last glance.
"I would kill him," Alice said the moment they stepped inside.
"That’s fair," Sniperbowlegend replied, thinking back to his own search.
The guard had been unnecessarily rough with him as well and had even slapped him a couple of times, almost as if he was angry that he had not been the one searching Alice.
"I can already tell the kind of camp this is," Alice said quietly. "From that encounter alone, you can tell it is dogs that run this place."
Sniperbowlegend did not reply immediately.
The moment they stepped fully into the camp and the heavy wooden gates closed behind them, his demeanor shifted. The slouch in his shoulders straightened, his breathing steadied, and his eyes began scanning their surroundings with quiet precision.
Only after they had walked a good distance away from the gate did he reach into the inner layer of his torn bag, a concealed spot that had completely escaped the guards’ inspection.
Carefully, he pulled out a folded piece of worn parchment.
Alice noticed instantly.
"Oh, that," she muttered.
He nodded, slowing his pace just enough to walk beside her while keeping his movements natural. "Yes. It’s a copy of Geoffrey’s drawing of the entire base."
"I know," she said, "but how sure are you that it is accurate?"
"He is too scared to go against Sir Broken," he replied calmly. "Besides, it would not be a smart choice. We can always find out if it is fake."
He unfolded the map just enough for her to see, shielding it with his body to ensure that no passerby caught a glimpse. The drawing was crude but detailed. Markings, symbols, arrows, and hastily written notes filled the parchment.
His finger tapped a rough circle near the outer edge of the map.
"We are here."
Alice followed his finger to the spot labeled Third Class Residential Area.
"It’s the lowest tier."
He folded the map slightly and continued walking as if nothing had happened.
Meanwhile, he explained what he had learned from Geoffrey. "This base is divided into three zones. Third class, second class, and first class. The third class is where they dump refugees, scavengers, low level awakened, and disposable manpower."
Alice nodded in disgust. "No wonder it is noisy, crowded, and filthy."
They passed rows of poorly constructed shelters. Makeshift tents and rusted metal sheets lined the paths. People with hollow eyes and guarded expressions watched them pass but said nothing.
"As for the second class," he continued, "that is where mid level adventurers live. Squad leaders. Officers. Skilled fighters. Better housing. Better food. Tighter patrols."
"And the first class?" she asked.
His eyes hardened slightly.
"That is the core," he said. "Where the real power sits. Where the lord of the camp stays alongside the top leaders. That is where command decisions are made."
That was where they needed to be.
They continued walking, blending seamlessly into the flow of people. To anyone watching, they were just two more refugees struggling to survive.
The camp was not just large. It was structured, with a clear hierarchy from top to bottom. If one wanted to advance to the second class or first class, they had to prove their worth.
When Gabriel had first heard about this system, he had thought it was a very efficient approach. By doing this, everyone would constantly strive to improve themselves, causing the camp to grow rapidly.
If such a structure had not been created, the eastern camp would not have become as large as it was today.
Sniperbowlegend glanced briefly toward the direction of the gate before frowning.
"They are mobilizing," he muttered. "Could it be they caught wind of our presence?"
