Chapter 463: Learning How to Become a Lord
Chapter 463: Learning How to Become a Lord
Back in the eastern camp, Gabriel had decided to make Damian temporarily in charge of the first main camp.
He did not want to bring the people from the first camp to the eastern camp because that way it would be easier for expansion.
Cramping everyone into one base would definitely make growth much slower. It was precisely because of the same reason why the eastern camp had sent Kairos out to set up his own camp and conquer the others close by.
Although it would be quite hard to protect both camps simultaneously in case of monster attacks, Gabriel had already made plans to counter such a scenario if it ever arose.
In the first main camp, when Damian and the others received the news that the eastern camp had been conquered and he was now the one in charge of the first camp, the Broken Dawn subordinates who had been left behind were very excited.
The entire camp entered a state of uproar, all chanting Gabriel’s name and singing praises to the Broken Dawn troop.
Unfortunately not everyone was excited. Although the war had been won, a great price had been paid as several families had lost their loved ones in the battle.
Damian assumed the leadership position swiftly. As someone who already had vast experience managing people, his first major move was to find a way to compensate the families that had lost their loved ones.
Though human lives were not comparable to material things, the compensation would be a much more spacious and luxurious house within the camp, along with an annual allowance to support them.
It might have felt as if Broken Dawn were the ones losing. One might think that if they were to keep this up for years their resources would eventually be depleted, and in a way they would be right.
However Damian felt it was necessary. By doing this, more refugees would be encouraged to enroll in the Broken Dawn army because even if they were to lose their lives, they would be assured that their families would be well taken care of.
In most cases, even better than when they were alive.
And in turn this would force the Broken Dawn faction to strive harder and gather more resources.
Even though he was now the head of the main camp, he still needed to consult Gabriel first.
After a quick consultation with Gabriel and Sophie through the radio system that had been made specifically for communication in the wilderness, he was given the green light to proceed.
The two also found the idea very interesting and subconsciously praised Damian for coming up with such a shady yet effective idea.
"So basically you... you guys are encouraging people to die on the battlefield, especially those who are struggling to get by." Seraphina smirked.
They were currently inside a large luxurious office with a heavy mahogany table that cost hundreds of thousands of Valerian dollars.
Gabriel was seated at the desk with mountains of paperwork stacked in front of him, while Seraphina sat on the L shaped sofa with her legs crossed elegantly while holding a small glass. The only difference was that it was not coffee, but rather something reddish.
The soft sound of paper turning echoed across the office as Gabriel flipped file after file. He was wearing a pair of rimless medicated glasses.
With his lush crimson hair falling over his temples and almost covering his eyes, and the transparent glasses resting on his elegant nose, he looked like a nerd. Not just any nerd, but a handsome one. The type that would be the male lead in a teen romance series.
Seraphina had teased him earlier about his appearance without stopping, and quite frankly Gabriel wanted to get rid of the eyeglasses. However it appeared that even though his eyesight was excellent, for some reason he still had to strain his eyes to see the words on the documents.
So it was not because of fashion, but because the glasses helped magnify the words, making it easier for him to go through the documents.
It did not make sense, but it was what it was.
Currently there were lines on Gabriel’s temple as he read the documents with great focus. Seraphina had never seen him this serious. It felt as if he was fighting some sort of war with the reports.
If one looked closely, they would notice the slight dark circles under his eyes which meant he had not had proper rest in days.
Yes, it had been approximately four days since the deaths of Henry and Dominic.
During these days nothing particularly eventful had happened. It had just been constant workload after another as they were still trying to set up everything.
Finally he raised his head, adjusted the glasses with his long slender fingers, and replied to her earlier question in a calm tone.
"You can look at it that way, but it is also encouraging us to grow and expand."
Gabriel paused briefly after speaking, then placed the document he was reading back onto the desk. His fingers tapped lightly against the stack of papers as if he was organizing his thoughts before continuing.
"But that is only one side of it," he added calmly. "People in the wilderness already face death every day. Monsters, raiders, hunger, disease. Those who join the army are not suddenly in danger. They were already in danger before they enlisted."
Seraphina took a slow sip from the glass in her hand, the reddish liquid swirling lazily as she tilted it. Her lips curved slightly.
"So you are saying you are simply giving them a better deal before they die."
Gabriel glanced at her briefly but did not react to the teasing tone.
"I am saying they are given purpose," he replied. "And their families are protected. In the wilderness, most people die and leave nothing behind. Their families starve, get enslaved, or disappear."
He flipped another page.
"This way their sacrifice at least means something."
Seraphina leaned deeper into the sofa and rested her head against the back cushion. She stared at him for a moment before speaking again.
"You know... when people first hear about Broken Dawn, they think it is some heroic faction saving refugees."
Her smile widened slightly.
"But when you actually look closer, it is a very efficient machine."
Gabriel did not deny it.
"The world is not kind enough to reward good intentions. Efficiency keeps people alive, and that is what we will strive for."
