Chapter 489 489: White Phantom vs the Adventure Guild
Chapter 489 489: White Phantom vs the Adventure Guild
Here in Stellar City, the Adventurer Guild was like the police back on Earth. They were in charge of regulating all activities related to the Awakened.
Therefore, when the hotel staff heard about the commotion, they quickly informed the Adventurer Guild, which was not too far from the hotel district.
And out of everyone who decided to show up, one of them was the vice guild leader herself, Scarlet Voss.
. . .
Back in the hotel room, a yellow tape had been placed around the crime scene. Two familiar faces could be seen observing the broken glass and other traces of destruction from the fight.
These two were none other than Lilly and Alice. They were currently the ones in charge of investigating the crime scene.
"Crime scenes like this are usually the most difficult to investigate," Lilly frowned, tracing her hand over a light crater on the ground.
She stood up and turned to one of the hotel staff. "You said this room belonged to a masked figure, right?"
"Yes ma," the staff nodded. "He came earlier with an otherworlder."
"Give us a description," Alice chimed in, slightly impatient.
The reporter, who was just like any other normal person, swallowed nervously. There was something common about the Awakened, and that was their presence.
It was suffocating and made people uncomfortable.
After the staff explained, only one name matched their description.
"White Phantom?" Alice frowned.
"That seems to be the only one who matches the description," Lilly shrugged.
"The first and last time he appeared was in the Monkey Paradise," Lilly said. "We opened a case file because it was a crime to kill an otherworlder openly, but finding him after that had been like searching for a drop of coin in an ocean."
"Now that he suddenly appears again, I wonder why he is here."
Suddenly Alice thought about something and then said, "Wait, since he came with an otherworlder, I think the best way to find out their identity is through the players."
Meanwhile, in another room in the same hotel.
A few minutes ago, when the assassin attacked, Gabriel had quickly texted XMan.
[Hey, leave your room. Go somewhere discreet and log out.]
XMan frowned when he saw the message, but he did not ask questions. He quickly went to the bathroom where he logged out without leaving any trace.
Since an assassin had come for him, Gabriel had thought that they might also come for XMan. So when he activated Burrow Shift, and during the few moments when he claimed he was simply observing his enemy, he had actually texted his partner.
"He is nowhere to be found," the staff reported after they failed to find XMan.
"Tsk, they knew we were coming for them," Alice clicked her tongue. "Let us just hope sister finds something valuable."
. . .
One of the known Adventurer Guild procedures was taking suspects back to their base, where they would be questioned with Alice present to detect whether the person was telling the truth or not.
For now, Gabriel did not have any way to counter Alice's skill. If things went wrong, his identity might be exposed.
Scarlet Voss remained standing in the same position, her hands behind her back as she calmly waited for Gabriel to make a decision.
"Vice leader, unfortunately I will have to decline your invitation," Gabriel replied. "I have important things to do. Maybe next time I will pay a visit."
"I do not remember giving you a choice," Scarlet's voice was uncharacteristically calm. However, if one paid close attention, they would notice the cold note in it.
Following her words, Scarlet unsheathed her slim, narrow yet elegant silver blade.
Having already expected the situation to escalate to this point, Gabriel did not react much and simply summoned one of the Twin Dragonfang blades, fastening his hand around the cold hilt.
"I wonder how much stronger she has gotten," Gabriel thought.
Scarlet moved first. Her body shifted slightly and then she swung her silver blade in a smooth motion. Several radiant silver arcs shot toward Gabriel in quick succession, cutting through the air and heading straight for him from different angles.
Gabriel did not panic. He stepped forward instead of backward and swung the Twin Dragonfang once. The golden blade collided with the first arc and shattered it instantly. He tilted his body to the side and let the second arc pass by his shoulder, then he twisted his wrist and destroyed the third arc with another clean slash. The last two arcs came from the side, and he ducked low and slid forward, letting them pass over him before he stood up again.
But while he was dealing with the arcs, Scarlet suddenly moved.
She took one step and disappeared from where she stood.
Fwoosh!
The next moment, she appeared beside him as if she had teleported, her silver blade already moving toward his side.
Gabriel reacted instantly. He stomped the ground hard and pushed himself away, creating distance between them. The concrete cracked slightly under his foot as he shot backward, then immediately leaned forward and charged straight at her with speed.
Shing! His blade went straight for her neck without hesitation.
Scarlet raised her sword and parried the strike, but the force behind Gabriel's attack still pushed her backward several steps across the rooftop. Before she could fully stabilize herself, Gabriel stepped in again and delivered a violent kick to her midsection.
Bang!
The kick landed cleanly and threw her into the air.
Before she could recover, Gabriel jumped up after her and raised his blade high, then brought it down in a heavy strike. The impact slammed her straight down through the roof of the building below, and her body crashed through concrete and wood, disappearing into the wreckage inside.
Dust and broken debris burst upward through the hole as the sound echoed through the building.
For a few seconds, the rooftop was quiet again.
Suddenly, Scarlet shot back up through the hole and landed on the roof again. There was dust on her clothes, and her expression was clearly angry now as she looked around for him.
But White Phantom was already gone.
She stood there for a moment, looking at the empty rooftop, the night wind blowing across the building.
The angry expression on her face slowly changed into something shocking.
A smile.
For someone like Scarlet, who was emotionless most of the time, this was very shocking. If others like Alice, Lilly, and Sophie had seen her, they would think she had been possessed.
"He grew stronger again," Scarlet murmured under her breath.
