Chapter 488: White Phantom Vs Black Star?

Chapter 488: White Phantom Vs Black Star?

Step. Step.

Gabriel calmly approached the corpse, and upon getting there, the first thing he did was strip the mask off their face, revealing a woman with average features.

Seeing that the body was still present confirmed Gabriel’s earlier suspicions. If it had been a player, when the assassin was killed they would have turned into data fragments.

Slowly, he started to rummage through her body. The search was fruitless as all he found were poisonous potions and daggers. They were high ranking as well, but nothing to get excited about.

After a bit of rummaging, Gabriel’s hand finally grazed something. With eyes gleaming with interest, he pulled out what he had found.

It was a white headband.

When he saw the headband, he already had an idea of who the attackers were. Slowly, he flipped it around, and then he saw it. His eyes flashed with recognition.

On the headband was the symbol of a black serpent.

That serpentine symbol had once struck fear into Gabriel and the hearts of players in his past life whenever they came across it. Even in this timeline, they were notoriously infamous.

They were the Black Star Clan.

"Now it all makes sense," Gabriel nodded in understanding, realizing why they had been so skilled and efficient. However, at the same time, it left him confused. Why come for him?

The Black Star Clan mainly targeted players. Their patriarch had a deep hatred for otherworlders and believed that they were invaders in their world.

Even in this timeline, the Black Star Clan had carried out their goal of wiping out players, and they were responsible for many deaths.

In fact, players had once petitioned the developers to get rid of them because they were known for spawn killing players until they hit zero.

If they deemed you a high level threat and placed a tracker on you, your best bet was to delete your character and create a new one because they would track you to the ends of the world.

This was the reason why, even in this timeline with all the strength Gabriel had, he was still slightly wary of that symbol.

Looking at the headband with a slightly narrowed gaze, Gabriel tried to think about how he had offended this organization enough for them to suddenly turn their attention to him.

"If anything, would it not be more logical if they tried to recruit me and use me to get rid of these invaders?" he thought for several minutes, but nothing came to mind.

Gabriel looked down at the corpse for a few seconds without moving. His expression was calm, but there was a clear coldness in his eyes now. They had tried to kill him. That alone was enough to annoy him.

"The Black Star Clan," he said under his breath.

In this life, they had not come for him yet. Not openly. Not directly. But that did not matter to him. He already had grudges with them from his past life, and this just made things worse.

If they were already moving in the shadows, then it was only a matter of time before they came again.

He did not like most players. That had never changed. But even so, he still needed them alive and strong. The future he knew was not something a few strong individuals could handle alone. When the real disasters started, numbers and strength would matter.

And groups like Black Star, who liked to kill potential talents early, would only weaken the overall strength of the human race.

That meant Black Star had to go. One way or another.

Gabriel crouched beside the corpse and placed his hand on it.

"Extrac..."

A faint purple light appeared for a moment and then disappeared. He did not say anything after that and simply stood up again, looking in the direction where the archer had escaped earlier. The night air moved quietly across the rooftops, and the city lights below made the buildings glow faintly.

Just as he had sensed earlier, a figure suddenly landed behind him.

The landing was light, controlled, and confident. They had made as little noise as possible.

Gabriel did not turn immediately. He already knew who it was from the presence alone. After a second, he raised his head slightly and looked over his shoulder.

It was the raven haired swordswoman, Scarlet.

She was standing a short distance away, her hair moving slightly in the night air, her posture relaxed as if she had not just jumped across several buildings to get here.

Gabriel frowned slightly and murmured under his breath, "Right... this is her city after all."

Scarlet crossed her arms and looked at the corpse on the ground, then back at him.

"White Phantom," she said calmly, her tone devoid of emotion as usual. "You are causing trouble in my city."

Gabriel turned fully to face her. No one knew this identity of his except Legendary Logan. So at this moment, it was safe to say Scarlet was a stranger to him.

"They attacked me first," Gabriel replied quietly.

"I can see that," she replied, glancing again at the corpse with the arrow still in its head. "Which is why I am here, and the others are checking the hotel room."

Gabriel said nothing. Scarlet looked at him for a few seconds, her eyes sharp but calm.

"Looks like someone really wanted that person dead before they could talk," she said.

"Yes," Gabriel replied. "They were trying to conceal their identity."

Scarlet nodded once, then looked back at him again, this time her gaze appearing even more serious.

Gabriel knew that look too well and inwardly face palmed. "Are we doing this again?" he thought.

Just as he expected, Scarlet’s next words confirmed his thoughts.

"Well, even then we still follow standard procedures," Scarlet said. "You will have to follow us back to the Adventurer Guild for questioning."

. . .

(The Black Star Clan was mentioned in Chapter 30: Crimson Judgement, then subsequently appeared again in Chapter 246-247 as well.)
