Chapter 630: The Ancient Forest
Chapter 630: The Ancient Forest
Hearing his voice, Sophie was silent for a moment before gently nodding.
“It hasn’t disappeared since this morning. In the past, I could only vaguely sense the direction whenever I calmed myself or approached areas where natural power was particularly concentrated. But now it’s different.”
Sophie raised her head and looked toward the deeper regions of the Alverion Mountains.
“Even when I’m not deliberately sensing it, I can still feel something constantly calling to me.”
It wasn’t a voice. It felt more like a resonance that originated from the very source of life itself.
Whenever that call appeared, the dormant natural power within her would begin to circulate on its own, as though it were responding to an existence that had been waiting for countless ages.
She couldn’t describe exactly what it felt like.
It wasn’t a command, nor was it guidance. It was more like a beloved family member quietly watching her from the distant horizon, simply waiting for her to draw closer, one step at a time.
As the distance between them continued to shrink, that connection became increasingly distinct. It even gave her the strange illusion that, so long as she kept moving forward, she would eventually find the place where she truly belonged.
Gabriel followed her gaze. Within the darkness, only the vague outlines of countless mountain peaks could be seen.
“Can you determine the direction?”
“I can.”
Sophie raised her hand and pointed into the distance.
“We need to continue that way. And it no longer feels as far away as it did before.”
If the call Sophie sensed truly came from the World Tree, then the direction they were currently traveling was correct.
“We continue tomorrow,” Gabriel said.
…
Early the next morning, the two left the valley and continued deeper in the direction Sophie sensed.
The road ahead was clearly more difficult than before.
As they moved farther away from their camping site, the levels of the monsters appearing around them gradually increased. In some areas, they could even see traces left behind by battles involving high level monsters.
Ancient trees broken cleanly through the middle.
Enormous claw marks deeply embedded in the mountain walls.
And massive bloodstains that had yet to completely dry.
All of this proved that the monsters living deep within the Alverion Mountains were far more dangerous than the ordinary creatures near the outskirts.
Gabriel did not actively seek battle, he still went out of his way to get rid of monsters, as they contributed to his Extraction Points.
Even when monsters occasionally appeared that could not be avoided, they were rarely able to delay the two of them for long.
Sophie was responsible for confirming the direction. As they continued traveling, the special connection within her body became increasingly powerful.
At first, she still needed to stop and close her eyes before she could determine exactly where the call was coming from.
By the third day, she no longer needed to do so.
It was as though a path that only she could sense was constantly guiding her forward.
That power did not directly tell her how much farther they needed to travel, nor could it allow her to see the location of the World Tree.
However, whenever she deviated from the correct direction, the natural power within her body would gradually become calm.
As soon as she turned once again toward the source of the call, the connection would immediately become clear.
Another two days passed, and at last, the two emerged from the seemingly endless Alverion Mountains.
After crossing the final mountain peak obstructing their view, Gabriel slowly came to a stop.
Sophie stopped beside him as well. Before them stood an enormous forest whose end could barely be seen.
Countless towering trees grew densely together, extending from the edge of the mountains to the farthest reaches of the horizon. Even from their high position, it was impossible to see the opposite end of the forest.
The scale of the forest could not be compared to that of an ordinary monster forest.
Judging solely by the region they could currently see, the land it occupied was already comparable to an entire kingdom.
There were no flying monsters above the forest.
Nor were there any sounds of ordinary beasts moving among the trees.
Even the sound that should have been created by the wind passing through the leaves seemed to have been completely swallowed by some invisible force.
The entire forest was unnaturally silent.
However, the instant Sophie saw it, her body suddenly froze in place.
A call dozens of times more powerful than before suddenly emerged from deep within the forest without warning.
She did not even need to actively sense it.
The power that had been flowing calmly within her body had already responded on its own.
Sophie raised her hand.
An extremely faint green light emerged from her palm before slowly drifting toward the forest ahead.
The green motes of light did not scatter with the wind.
It was as though they had been pulled by some mysterious force.
They slowly passed beyond the edge of the mountain and drifted toward the depths of the forest.
Sophie stared blankly at the green lights.
Without realizing it, her breathing became slightly faster.
Gabriel turned to look at her.
“What is it?”
Sophie did not answer right away, her gaze fixed on the depths of the forest.
The call that had accompanied her throughout the entire journey had become clearer than ever before, as though the moment she continued into the forest, she would finally find the thing that had always been waiting for her.
Only after a long while did Sophie slowly speak.
“This is the place.” Her voice was quiet, but it carried an unmistakable certainty. “The call is coming from deep within this forest.”
“We’ve arrived.” Sophie looked at Gabriel. “The World Tree is inside.”
