Chapter 416 – Warmth and Happiness
The airship that carried us was heading east, passing through towns and villages and even over the streets on its way to Merinesburg. Like on the way there, there must have been a lot of souls who saw the magic airship on the way back, but since it was the second time, there probably wasn’t as much excitement as on the way there. Probably.
As soon as we entered the territory of the Merinard Kingdom, we used the golem communicator to inform them that we were on our way from the Dragonis Mountain Kingdom to Merinesburg, so the information should have been passed on to the lords and guardians in the towns where the golem communicator was installed. We have already established an information network using golem communicators within the Kingdom of Merinard, so it is likely that similar information has already been relayed to Merinesburg.
There are no flying monsters threatening the magic airship in the territory of the Kingdom of Merinard, so the operation itself is peaceful. The lunch menu consisted of dried pasta with canned meat sauce and canned soup. The soup was made with corn-like grains that I guessed were bought in the Dragonis Mountain Kingdom, and the texture and sweetness were unexpectedly well-matched.
Hmm, corn-like grains were grown in the Elven Village and the Merinard Kingdom, but they did not have that level of sweetness. Perhaps the variety is different from the one grown in Dragonis Mountain Kingdom.
“We’ll have to inspect it when we get back, I guess.”
“Hmm, we need to take a good look at what kind of strain it is under. Right now, I’m worried about the magic sparkling stone furnace, the magic power lines, and the landing gear.”
“That’s right. Especially the magic power transmission lines around the lightning cannon may be under stress.”
The lightning cannon itself needs to be developed in a modified form, and there’s a lot of work to be done after we return home. There has also been talk from the Dragonis Mountain Kingdom about setting up an embassy there, just like the Varyag Empire, so it will be necessary to move forward with securing a location and property as well. At worst, as long as I can secure a location, I can build the embassy myself… No, it’s not urgent, and it’s not a good idea to take the builder’s job. It would certainly be cheaper and faster if I did it myself, but if that’s all I do, the local building industry will only decline. I’ll have to think about how to use it.
While I spent time with Isla discussing the maintenance and overhaul of the magic airship, and with Driada discussing the construction of an embassy, securing a site for it, and trade, we finally received a report that we were in sight of Merinesburg.
“Finally.”
“Yes. As we approached Merinesburg, I felt a sudden urge to see everyone’s faces.”
Driada smiles as she says this. For what it’s worth, Driada and her sisters are very close. To Driada, Iphrita, Aquawill-san, and Sylphy are her dear sisters.
“I hope Elise and Conrad are well…and I hope the Harpies are not hurt or sick.”
The slightest illness in a baby can have serious consequences. At this point, I haven’t received any news, and there are many clerics, mages, and alchemists in the castle. And since I’ve made a life potion and a healing potion, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about, but worry is still worry. I am afraid that they might get hurt while practicing flying since they are all energetic children.
“You have a father’s face, don’t you?”
“I am a father, you know. Well, I don’t really feel like a father yet.
I haven’t found the way to what a father should be in this world. The ideal father figure on Earth, or even in Japan, is still a little hazy. Well, I guess I’ll just have to do what I think is best at any given time.
“Kosuke, we will land shortly.”
“Roger that. Don’t hit the castle.”
The landing site was a temporary landing field built behind the royal castle. I guess we should build our own landing site somewhere soon. The landing site should be near the commercial district, considering that the magic airship will be used for trade. There are a lot of warehouses in that area. It would be more convenient for loading and unloading cargo.
While I was thinking about this, the magic airship entered a landing position and gradually began to lower its altitude. It’s really convenient to be able to stand still in the air or go up and down vertically.
The magic airship landed at the temporary landing site behind the castle without any problems. At that moment, a sigh of relief could be heard on the bridge. After all, the landing is the most delicate time. If we were not careful, we might even tip over. I’d like to think of a way to land safely under automatic control, but that would require the development of golem control technology. Unfortunately, I can’t do anything with my abilities to modify the golem core. I can easily make a golem for combat, and once I have the actual golem, I can make as many copies of the core’s contents as I want.
“Thank you all for your hard work. There is still some cleaning up to be done, but this completes our work for this project. I’ll leave extra bonuses with Isla, Ted, and Darko, so the soldiers will get their bonuses from their respective captains, and everyone else will get their bonuses from Isla and take the rest of the day off.”
When I announced this to the entire ship using the magic transmission tube, there seemed to be cheers from all over the ship. On the bridge, all the mages looked at me and Isla with expressions of relief and joy.
“That’s right, I’m counting on you. Three small gold coin bonuses each.”
“Hmm, okay.”
I put the bag full of small gold coins on a large table on the bridge―mainly to spread out the map―and leave it with Isla. I also entrusted Ted and Darko with a bag of small gold coins each. I told them to return any excess to me through Isla. I also gave Ted and Darko five small gold coins as a bonus. By the way, one small gold coin is about one month’s living expenses. It is difficult to convert it into Japanese currency because of the price difference, but it is safe to assume that each small gold coin is worth about 100,000 yen.
“Isn’t that a lot of money?”
“It wouldn’t be wise for the prince consort to be so stingy, would it? I am not hurting for money at all.”
I’m not joking. My inventory contains assets that easily exceed the national budget of the Varyag Empire, not to mention the Kingdom of Merinard. Hundreds of small gold coins are only a fraction of a penny.
“All right, let’s get off. If I don’t get off, the other soldiers won’t either.”
I’m still the leader of this ship, you know. In a situation like this, I should take the lead.
I went down from the upper deck to the hold with Driada and asked the soldiers to open the loading door at the bow. Sylphy and the others were waiting for us at the end of the cargo bay.
“I’m home, Sylphy.”
“Welcome back, Kosuke. Good to see you again.”
Today, Sylphy was not wearing her usual bodysuit-like war costume but a red dress. It felt very fresh.
“It’s good to be back.”
Sylphy hugged me again. I hugged her back, enjoying her warmth. Oh, I feel so relaxed. More than words, this feeling of holding someone you love in your arms is more precious than anything else. I guess that is what happiness is all about.
Thinking of this, I continued to hold Sylphy until Melty cleared her throat and made a small protest.
