Chapter 1892 Battle for Survival

Chapter 1892 Battle for Survival

It was daytime, yet there wasn't much sunlight to speak of.

There never was.

The sky always remained gloomy. The rays of the sun never managed to filter through the packed clouds above.

"Everyone get in formation! Now!" Adam barked out orders.

"Several bogeys incoming!" Kara shouted.

The rest of the party immediately tore their attention away from the gates and toward the landscape ahead.

Dense forests lined both sides of the dirt road, their tangled branches obscuring everything beyond. Even the road itself curved ahead before disappearing into the trees.

For several long moments, nothing emerged.

Only the distant cawing of ravens and the occasional flutter of wings disturbed the oppressive silence.

And then…

Howl!

A wolf's howl tore through the air, eerie and deadly. The haunting call of the beast made every member of the party stiffen.

For they knew…

A wolf was rarely alone.

As if confirming their fears, countless more howls answered the first. Moments later, the undergrowth ahead erupted with violent rustling as more than a dozen figures burst from the trees, instantly fanning out to surround the adventurers.

"Heh." The corners of Adam's lips curled into a smile. "What a warm welcome this is."

Fifteen giant wolves barred their way.

Eight possessed strength comparable to a Rank 1 Cavalier Paladin, while the remaining seven were on par with Rank 0 - Squire Paladins.

The band of adventurers, meanwhile, consisted of two Rank 1 Mana Core Magi, three Rank 1 Cavalier Paladins, one Rank 0 Squire Paladin, and Valerian, whose strength was also comparable to a Rank 0 Squire but whose prowess allowed him to contend with stronger opponents.

Even so, the disparity was obvious.

Adam's party was outnumbered and outmatched.

Darren, realizing the sheer danger the team was in, subconsciously blurted out, "We need to get out of here! Quickly—"

"Silence."

Adam's cold words cut through the air, their weight bearing down on Darren.

"Two captains sink the ship," he added. "So shut up and follow my orders."

Darren gritted his teeth, his eyes bloodshot from rage.

Is this really the time to prove whose cock is bigger?! he screamed inwardly.

This fucker is out of his mind!

And yet, he remained where he stood.

He didn't have the courage to flee alone. Perhaps if a few followed him, he might survive. After all, he only had to outrun them.

But given the current situation, he knew for a fact that the rest of the party members would follow Adam's orders to the letter. After all, the raven-haired youth had proved his effectiveness as the leader on more than one occasion.

They had, after all, escaped the mist and the sea of undead and reached this place, hadn't they?

Fuck! Darren cursed inwardly.

Meanwhile, the wolves hadn't attacked yet. Their eyes gleamed with intelligence as they gazed at the adventurers. It even seemed that the beasts were having fun watching the humans about to descend into chaos.

The alpha, a black wolf with a scar running across its eye, bared its fangs. It almost seemed like the beast was grinning.

"Michael, take point," Adam instructed calmly, his steady tone oddly reassuring the others.

"Darren, Kara, cover the front two quadrants," he continued. "Koby and Valerian, secure the middle. Genevieve, you've got the rear."

He tightened the handwraps around his wrist and lowered himself into a fighting stance. Then he said:

"Focus on defence. Each of you engage with an opponent at your own level. I'll operate independently and work on reducing their numbers. Understood?"

"Understood!" the rest of the party members — everyone except Darren, of course — answered in unison as they readied themselves for battle.

Suddenly sensing the shift in the humans' temperament, the alpha growled menacingly and quickly instructed his pack to attack.

But Adam moved first.

Having already completed the components of the spell, he brought his hands together into a resounding clap.

[Winds of Calamity]

The air roared as a violent surge of wind burst outward with overwhelming force.

The Rank 1 wolves dug their claws into the ground, sliding back only a few steps under the blast. The weaker wolves, however, fared far worse. They were hurled off their feet and sent tumbling backward across the dirt.

Adam didn't waste any time and dashed toward the strongest enemy — the alpha.

The black wolf had momentarily closed its eyes because of the strong winds. Its instincts kicked in when it sensed Adam's movement.

For a brief second, the wolf shuddered as Adam's killing intent locked him in place.

And that second was all it took. Adam disappeared from his spot, arriving before the alpha in the blink of an eye. Tyrannical mana swirled around his clawed hand as he struck the wolf's face.

Driven by instinct, the alphas leaned sideways, narrowly avoiding the brutal strike. Adam's eyes narrowed. He quickly pivoted, using the momentum of his missed strike to whirl and deliver a spinning backheel kick, catching the beast off-guard.

Bam!

The alpha nearly lost consciousness from the kick to the head. It spat a mouthful of blood and bile as it flew in the distance.

Adam didn't immediately follow. Instead, he rapidly weaved hand seals and pointed his hands sideways.

[Blades of Emanation]

The two Rank 1 wolves closest to him suddenly froze. A moment later, red lines traced across their bodies, and then they came apart. Their corpses were diced into several parts before crashing to the ground.

The stench of blood, coupled with the murderous aura radiating from Adam, sent the remaining wolves scrambling backward in fear.

Adam clicked his tongue in annoyance. The element of surprise was gone, and the alpha in the distance had already regained its footing.

Without looking back, he spoke to the rest of the party:

"Hold your ground. Focus on defense. And keep the gate at your backs. I'll return shortly."

With that said, he disappeared once again. In the next heartbeat, savage howls, furious roars, and the bloody sounds of battle erupted from deep within the forest.

Adam and the alpha wolf had begun their battle.

Meanwhile, the remaining dozen wolves bared their fangs and lunged at the rest of the adventurers.

A desperate battle for survival had begun.
