Chapter 2029 Difficult to Counter
Chapter 2029 Difficult to Counter
It had only been a few minutes since the barrier rose and the battle began.
Yet in those few minutes, a few dozen vampires, ghouls, and other monsters had been obliterated just from the sheer collateral damage.
One of the Mana Seed vampires, Echo Leroux, had also just been eliminated.
Adam watched her corpse lifelessly collapse to the forest floor, satisfied by the outcome. The opponent was fast and excelled in close combat, and he had defeated her through deceit.
He didn't mind how he killed his opponents. A dead enemy was a good enemy.
The others inside the barrier, however, had completely different reactions. The vampire and ghoul underlings were stunned that one of their mistresses had died so quickly. And the human had defeated her while being completely outnumbered!
No one was more shocked than Janet Leroux. She watched wide-eyed as her twin sister's headless body lay motionlessly on the ground.
They were sisters born together from the same womb. They had spent millennia with one another and were inseparable… until today.
Vampires had strong regenerative abilities, true. But that was utterly useless if someone decapitated them. An injury to the heart could be recovered from.
But an injury to the brain? Death was confirmed.
In an instant, Janet's eyes turned bloodshot from fury and hatred. The injury to her abdomen had already healed. She straightened herself and cast a venomous look toward Adam:
"HOW DARE—"
However, she was interrupted. Not by any of Adam's attacks or anything, but by how flippant he acted.
The man stood with a mocking smile on his face as he looked at Janet. It was almost as if he was daring her to try something stupid.
Janet felt as if her raging emotions were doused by a bucket of ice-cold water.
She pressed down the feelings of anger and hatred. There would be a time to mourn. Now wasn't the time.
With tears streaming down her pale face, she pointed at Adam.
"Attack him!"
More than fifty vampires, ghouls, and other monsters remained within the barrier, but none dared to approach Adam. They were terrified. They had just witnessed what had happened to Echo and the others. They hesitated.
Janet's expression darkened and she roared:
"I SAID ATTACK HIM! ALL OF YOU!"
This time, the monsters did not hesitate anymore. The forest erupted into chaos. More than fifty creatures charged toward Adam at once. They came from every direction.
The ghouls rushed from the front, their grotesque bodies tearing through the undergrowth. Vampires followed from behind, using their superior speed to circle the battlefield. Meanwhile, the other monsters spread through the trees.
Adam was slightly surprised by Janet's move. He was sure that she would give in to her rage and attack him without caution. That's what he would have done if he were in her shoes. But instead, the vampire wanted to drown him beneath numbers.
And while I deal with the swarm, you will strike, is that it? He thought to himself.
Well, your control over your emotions is greater than mine. I'll give you that.
Or perhaps, such is the case because you are an undead?
Ah, whatever.
Adam's hands blurred into hand seals. Before the enemies closed in on him, he pressed his palms to the ground.
[Earthen Walls]
Four massive walls of stone erupted around him.
With a deafening sound, the monsters crashed against them. Others simultaneously climbed or jumped over the structure, but Adam did not wait for them.
[Sturdy Spikes]
Sharp and sturdy spears shot out from the four walls and flew toward the enemies. In the blink of an eye, the first wave of monsters had their bodies pierced through by the sharp projectiles. The latter waves were fortunate enough to dodge.
The casting of [Sturdy Spikes] had reduced the earlier [Earthen Walls] into nothing.
The School of Invocation did not truly create something from nothing. The law of conservation of energy still held true. Every spell required a source.
Wind, water, and earth magic had the lowest requirements for material components because their respective elements were abundant in nature. A Magus could simply manipulate the wind already present in the atmosphere, draw upon nearby sources of water, or shape the earth beneath their feet.
Other forms of invocation magic, however, required far more resources. The less abundant the material component, the greater the burden placed upon the Magus and their mana.
Sometimes it became outright impossible to cast certain spells without the material components, like how Adam couldn't cast fire magic presently.
As the [Earthen Walls] were reduced to dust, Janet capitalized on the opportunity and appeared behind Adam. Her claws tore toward his neck.
But Adam was already prepared.
[Whac-A-Mole]
His figure abruptly plunged into the earth, and Janet's attack once again ended up hitting empty air.
Janet gnashed her teeth in fury. She looked at the hole in the ground and spread her senses downward. Yet she failed to perceive the human.
Doing her best to suppress the fury in her heart, she scanned the battlefield. So many of her subordinates were dead. Now only a few dozen remained. Her gaze briefly settled on her twin sister's corpse, and the hatred and anger in her heart erupted unbridled.
But suddenly, a chill crept down her spine as she heard the ground rumble faintly. Instincts took over, and she leapt into the air. While at the same time, she barked out instructions to the rest. Of course, it was already too late.
[Needle Forest]
Dozens of sharp stone spikes erupted from the ground. The bodies of the lesser vampires, ghouls, and monsters were violently impaled.
In midair, Janet watched with growing horror as all of her subordinates were impaled by countless sharp earthen spikes.
She couldn't understand how Adam was able to cast spells so rapidly. Not only that, each of his spells was strong, heavy, and oppressive. He weaved from one spell to another with such fluidity that it was highly difficult to counter them.
Fear finally gripped her heart. The feelings of anger and hatred were quickly replaced by the urge to flee.
I cannot avenge her if I die!
Suddenly, her instincts screamed at her, warning her that her life was in danger.
A gust of wind and a faint blue light caught her attention. Utterly terrified, she turned her head in midair, only to find Adam behind her, his index finger pointed at her head.
"NO—"
[Magic Missile]
Janet's cry was cut short as her head exploded.
