Chapter 481 - The Merchant's prowess
Chapter 481 - The Merchant's prowess
"The Merchant."
The name was like an uppercut on Noah's skull, making his eyes instinctively squint in seriousness.
His relaxed position shifted into a more solemn one, leaning his face slightly as if not hearing clearly enough.
"The Merchant?" Noah echoed, tilting his head slightly to the right, hand resting on his chin in a pensive gesture. The ring on his finger glowed.
The name, for some reason, flooded his senses with a strange feeling. It was like he knew the name, yet at the same time he didn't.
However, something about it threatened to stir awake some memories, but to no avail.
Noah felt like he was standing on an edge, stretching his hand with all his might to grasp something, only to barely brush his finger against
it.
The frustration was boiling.
'But what kind of memories?' Noah muttered inwardly, his thoughts churning restlessly to find some logical explanation to his current emotions.
There were no memories inside his mind that he wasn't, at hundred per cent, sure that they were his and his alone. And The Prince honestly doubted that anyone was able to seal or even inject memories inside his mind without him being aware of it.
But if all of this was true, then either what he was feeling was not memories but something else...
Then again, what could it possibly be?
"You seem to be awfully thoughtful, my friend," Light cut through the restless thoughts of Noah like a blade, "Don't tell me you know The Merchant?"
The Soul Ruler shook his head immediately after,
"No. It's impossible."
Noah spared him a glance, "Why is that?"
"You live in the Universe of Primus, my friend Noah. The Merchant is from the Universe of Ascendancy." Light said, blinking his one eye, like a shrug, "The only way for you to know him is either one of you two go towards the other universe. But that too, it's very unlikely."
"Because if that was the case, the Primus Universe will be no more with Him coming there." Light added, shrugging.
"How come?" Elira asked, frowning like Noah and Yuki, "Is he that strong?"
"Strong?" The Ruler almost laughed, "The Merchant is strangely weak for a man of his renown. Light burn me, even you two weaklings could kill him if you try enough."
Yuki and Elira's lips twitched. They restrained themselves, knowing it was not the time to let themselves be provoked.
"Then what made him dangerous enough to kill a Principality?" Noah asked, more and more confused about all of this.
A Principality was not a simple man.
The Spirit World, Noah discovered lately, was composed of hundreds or even thousands of Principalities.
Each Universe in the Waking Reality was equal to a Principality in the Spirit World. And within each Principality existed Soul Rulers who were above all except the Principality itself.
One could only imagine how much power such a figure could possess. And yet he was killed by someone that could be slaughtered by Yuki and Elira?
Not that Noah looked down on his wives - he would never dare - but the fact remained that they could not achieve such a feat.
"Remember his name." Light said, "He is called The Merchant. Fighting is not his main thing, my friend, you see. In fact, he is very well known for hating it."
"But there is one thing The Merchant has in abundance. Can you guess what?"
"Treasure." Noah guessed.
"Yes, my friend," Light nodded, "Abnormal treasures that could collapse a whole universe if needed. But not only, my friend. The Merchant has the most subordinates and believers ever recorded."
His voice lowered, taking a solemn tone,
"And he has the most allies. Allies that involve other Principalities. So when I said The Merchant killed him, my friend, it didn't mean that he did it by his own hand."
"It means," Noah managed to connect the dots, "that either his subordinates or allies did it for him."
"Or both of them." Light added.
Noah fell silent, thinking furiously about these new information.
There was nothing more annoying than going against someone who
has many friends.
Especially if those friends involved a whole bloody group of Principalities. It could very much be troublesome, for it would feel
unending.
Suddenly, Noah felt like he was not doing enough.
He doubted anyone had this much advantage as him. Nevertheless,
here was a person who could kill a damn Principality without lifting a
finger.
All while he was here, trying to return badly to the waking world
where his people were being slaughtered like chickens for
Thanksgiving.
Suddenly, a surge of illogical anger and indignation flooded Noah's
existence.
He hardened his eyes, jaw clenching tight, asking another question,
"What did our Principality do to make him kill it?" Noah's voice was quiet and steady, but there was an undertone of choking tension underneath it.
His wives felt it instantly, snapping their heads in unison towards him, wondering what made their husband suddenly angry.
Light felt it too, but said nothing and answered,
"No one knows." The Ruler said, "There are many speculations about
the reasons but none certain. Anything I will say about it might
mislead you."
"Nothing is worse than false information on a potentially opponent."
Noah nodded, agreeing with him.
"Still," Light continued, "There is one thing I can tell you, friend. It's
my opinion, so take it however you want."
"I am listening." Noah said.
"You must know that only a Principality can go to another Principality
of another universe. Us, Soul Rulers, cannot."
Noah, Yuki and Elira nodded, prompting Light to continue his speech,
"And from what I have heard, our Principality has taken something
from the Ascendancy Universe."
"What-!"
"Don't ask me what that thing is, my friend." Light shook his head, "I
have sincerely no idea about it. But no doubt, it must have been something important to The Merchant for his allies to act."
"Are you sure about this information?"
"As sure as my Love will come back to me."
"That doesn't sound so convincing, you know?"
"That was the point, my friend."
Noah sighed, passing a hand over his face, thinking about what he just
learned.
The Merchant made him feel strange. And added to his power and connections, it became worse.
Noah was not one to compare himself to others, but now he felt like
he was lagging behind another being. Now he wondered why he felt some kind of competition against The Merchant.
'I am the son of reality. And here I am lagging behind some merchant?'
That thought itself sounded blasphemous. And that thought made him feel a weird kind of feeling.
Something he didn't feel since a long time. Something since Elijah
died.
Noah opened his eyes slowly, then looked at Light in front of him,
"Light." Noah whispered, "I want to be the Principality of the Primus Universe. Will you go against me?"
Yuki and Elira's bodies tensed, watching Light.
The Soul Ruler did not say anything for a couple of seconds, seeming
like he was pondering sincerely about the matter.
The tension was thick, swelling like a balloon.
"I will not."
Light answered, and the tension drifted away instantly.
Yuki and Elira both relaxed.
"Will you bind yourself to me?" Noah asked once more.
"You are my friend, aren't we already bound?"
"To make it official. And besides, can you tell me something?"
"What is it?"
Noah paused, exhaling through his nose and mouth, and then...
"What do I need to do to become a Principality as fast as possible?" Light's answer came as swift as a lightning bolt,
"The fastest way is to simply obtain the Authority from the Origin Will
of the Spirit World, the Master of all Principalities."
