Chapter 830: Complex and Confusion
Chapter 830: Complex and Confusion
“To be honest, my lord… I am not ready.”
The admission hung in the air between them. She looked down at the path, her expression conflicted, as if the truth had cost her something to say. Then, almost as an afterthought, she quickly murmured under her breath:
“It’s not like I like anyone else. I like you.”
The moment the words left her mouth, Elara’s entire body stiffened. Her eyes flew wide in pure horror as she realized exactly what she had just said. She literally jumped a small step back, her hands flying up to cover her mouth as a deep, vivid flush exploded all over her face.
“I— I didn’t mean—!” she stammered, her voice cracking with panic. “That is… I only meant that I don’t dislike you! Or that I respect you! Not that I—!”
She trailed off, completely flustered. Her ears had turned nearly as pink as her gown.
Julian stopped walking as well.
For a brief second, genuine surprise flickered across his face. He had expected hesitation. He had even expected a carefully polite rejection of the idea of marriage so soon. What he had not expected was the sudden, unfiltered confession that she “liked” him… followed by such an immediate and dramatic attempt to take it back.
A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched the corner of his mouth as he watched her spiral.
“You like me,” he repeated, not as a question, but simply as an observation.
Elara looked like she wanted the ground to open and swallow her whole. She shook her head rapidly, still covering part of her face.
“I misspoke,” she insisted, though her voice was small and unconvincing. “I only meant that I do not hate the idea of… of being connected to you. That is all. Please forget I said anything.”
Julian regarded her for another moment, letting the silence stretch just long enough to make her shift uncomfortably. Then he spoke again,
“I will not force the issue,” he said. “Marriage is not something that should be rushed, especially when one of the people involved does not feel ready. Ambition and duty are heavy enough without adding a bond you are not prepared for.”
He paused, then added more softly, “But I also will not pretend I did not hear what you said.”
Elara finally lowered her hands, though she still refused to look at him directly. Her face remained a deep shade of red.
“…You are very difficult to talk to,” she muttered under her breath.
Julian’s faint smile deepened just slightly.
“I have been told that before.”
He paused, letting the silence stretch for a heartbeat longer before he spoke again.
“I am interested in you as well, Lady Elara.”
The words landed with crushing weight. Elara’s head snapped up and her eyes widened in pure disbelief. Whatever composure she had managed to gather after her earlier slip completely shattered again. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. The flush that had only just begun to fade rushed back with full force, painting her cheeks a deep crimson.
But before she could spiral into another round of panicked explanations, Julian continued,
“I was not before,” he added. “In fact, when I first learned of the betrothal, I was even thinking of turning the proposal down completely.”
The second statement immediately dimmed the shock of the first. The bright, startled light in Elara’s eyes shifted into something more complex. It was the mixture of confusion, uncertainty, and a searching look as she tried to make sense of what he was saying. To her, he must have sounded like a puzzle: first claiming interest, then admitting he had nearly rejected the entire arrangement. Her expression reflected that conflict clearly.
Julian did not wait for her to respond.
“Your determination and fire pull me in, Lady Elara. The way you refused to yield even when the gap between us was clear… the way you risked yourself just to stand as an equal for a moment. That is rare. And I must admit… I rarely feel this way.”
He was speaking the truth.
It was not Kraven talking in that moment, but the original Julian. If he searched his long, complicated life, he could count on one hand the number of times he had truly felt something beyond calculation or conquest toward someone outside his family circle.
The majority of the women who shared his life in the World of the Throne of Gods had come from within that circle – mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, etc. The few who had come from outside, like Lisa, Isabella, and a handful of others, had not begun with love. They had started as pieces in a larger mission handed down by the system. Affection and genuine care had grown later, slowly and often against his original intentions.
But this… this was different.
Standing here in the quiet morning light of the Astran courtyard, looking at the flushed, determined young woman who had just pushed herself to the edge against him, Julian felt something he had not expected. It was not the consuming, system-driven desire he had known before, nor the deep, complicated bonds of family. It was cleaner. A pull born purely from the fire he had seen in her eyes when she refused to back down.
Elara stared at him, clearly struggling to process the layered confession. Her hands had lowered from her face, but they remained tightly clasped in front of her.
“You… were going to refuse the betrothal?” she asked at last, her voice small and uncertain. “And now you say you are interested… because of the duel?”
Julian met her gaze steadily.
“Not only because of the duel,” he said. “But the duel made it impossible to ignore. I have met many people who speak of ambition. Very few who are willing to bleed for it in front of an audience that expects them to fail. That kind of resolve is… difficult to look away from.”
Elara’s lips parted again, but this time no panicked denial came. She simply looked at him, her expression open and a little lost, as if she was seeing him clearly for the first time – devoid of his title of young lord of the duchy.
