I AM A MAGE BUT WITH MILF SYSTEM

Chapter 831: The Promise

Chapter 831: The Promise

Elara’s lips parted again, but this time no panicked denial came. She simply looked at him, her expression open and a little lost, as if she was seeing him clearly for the first time – devoid of his title of young lord of the duchy.

The garden path around them felt suddenly quieter. The soft sound of the fountain, the distant rustle of leaves, even the faint lingering scent of the morning… all of it seemed to fade into the background as their conversation continued.

For the first time since her arrival, the political arrangement that had bound them no longer felt like the only thing standing in the space between their bodies.

Julian then stopped dead in his tracks, causing Elara to halt suddenly as well. The soft morning light filtered through the leaves above them, casting shifting patterns across the stone path.

“Lady Elara,” he said, his voice quieter now. “A big war is going to engulf this kingdom soon.”

He watched her carefully as he spoke.

Elara did not show much reaction to his words. There was no widening of the eyes, no sharp intake of breath or even flicker of genuine surprise. Her expression remained composed, almost expectant, as if the statement had merely confirmed something she had already been carrying quietly in the back of her mind. That lack of reaction made Julian’s interest sharpen immediately.

She already knew, he thought. Or at least, she knew enough not to be shocked.

His mind turned quickly toward the question of her mentor. Whoever had trained her to Peak Sovereign in such a short time, and whoever had allowed her even fragmentary knowledge of an approaching war, was almost certainly someone very powerful. And very close to the crown. Few people outside the highest circles would have access to information of that nature.

“It seems you already knew about this,” Julian said, studying her face.

Elara met his gaze for a brief moment before looking ahead again.

“I heard a few words from my master here and there,” she admitted. “He never told me the full truth… what the war was truly about, nor who would be participating. But he made it clear that something large was approaching, and that the kingdom would not remain peaceful for much longer.”

Julian smiled faintly, though the expression did not fully reach his eyes.

“Since your master allowed you even that much,” he said, “you are going to be a part of this one way or another.”

Elara did not deny it.

She stood there in the soft light, and for a moment the shy, flushed young woman from earlier seemed to recede. In her place stood someone stronger and more determined.

She had never been the type to hide from a challenge. The betrothal, the pressure of her family’s expectations, the long years of relentless training in the capital… all of it had been steps toward something larger. And what better stage was there to carve a name into history than a war that would shake the entire kingdom?

Julian could see the thought moving behind her eyes. She did not look afraid. If anything, there was a hungry spark of resolve.

“I will not run from it,” she said at last, her voice steady. “If the war comes, I will stand where I am needed. My master always said that strength without purpose is meaningless. If this is the purpose that has been placed in front of me… then I will meet it.”

Julian regarded her for a long moment. The honesty in her words, the lack of hesitation, and the quiet ambition beneath them all aligned with what he had already begun to sense about her. She was not simply a political piece. She was someone who intended to shape her own place in the coming storm.

“That is a dangerous kind of resolve,” he said quietly. “But it is also a rare one.”

Elara glanced at him, a faint, almost self-aware smile touching her lips.

“You said my determination pulled you in,” she replied. “This is part of it. I did not train this hard only to watch the world change from the sidelines.”

Julian chuckled softly. For a few seconds, silence stretched between them again. The garden path felt quieter than before, as if even the leaves and the distant fountain had paused to listen.

Then Julian spoke.

“I doubt we will be on the same side though, my lady.”

Elara’s brow furrowed at once. The words clearly unsettled her. She opened her mouth, ready to question him, but before she could form the first word, he continued:

“So when the war is all over, and your ambitions are all fulfilled… I will formally come to your estate to ask for your hand in marriage.”

The statement landed with the force of a thunder.

Elara froze completely. Her eyes widened, lips parting in pure, unfiltered shock. For a long moment she simply stared at him, as if she could not quite believe the words had actually left his mouth. The flush that rose this time was different from the embarrassed one earlier. This one was deeper, more disbelieving, and tinged with something she could not immediately name.

“You…” she began, then stopped. Her voice came out smaller than she intended. “You would… wait? Until after the war? Until I’ve… done whatever it is I need to do?”

Julian met her gaze steadily. There was no teasing in his expression now. Only pure sincerity that made the moment feel heavier and somehow cleaner.

“Yes,” he said simply. “I will not ask you to set aside your fire for the sake of an arrangement made by others. You have dreams that are still unfinished. Ambitions that still need room to breathe. When the war ends, and you have stood where you needed to stand… then I will come. Properly. Formally. And I will ask.”

Elara’s hands had gone still at her sides. She looked at him as if seeing him in an entirely new light.

A promise that respected the path she still needed to walk.

“That is…” she whispered, then shook her head slightly, still struggling to process it. “No one has ever spoken to me like that. Most people only see the betrothal. Or the alliance. Or the fact that I am useful. You are telling me you would wait… until I am finished becoming who I need to be?”
