Chapter 1438: Commander Of The Gate Sentinels
Chapter 1438: Commander Of The Gate Sentinels
Northern arrived at the Garrison as he was instructed. The place was a gated keep thrown towards the northernmost end of the forest that choked the entire northern wall.
Immediately they appeared at the gate of the keep, they were stopped, and then he had to tell them what he was here for, after which he handed them his card.
The soldier studied it for a moment and said in a warning tone,
"That name of yours could get you killed, kid. Keep it outta people’s mouths."
The soldier let the three of them in, and Northern couldn’t help but freeze for a moment as he saw an astounding number of soldiers yelling at intervals as they climbed trees and jumped down.
But that wasn’t just what made him freeze.
The size of this place was astonishing and unbelievable.
From outside the walls, perhaps because of the slope, Northern had never thought that he would be coming into another forest. Though the walls were tall, he assumed they were crowded with battlements and garrisons where soldiers trained.
This... wasn’t far off. At the same time, it wasn’t exactly it.
"Whatchya looking around for, kid? Follow through if you wanna become a part of us. Hurry, run along."
It was the same soldier who had let him pass with a stern warning that called him. The man was going towards the west angle of where the other recruits were busy training.
Northern gulped and followed.
’I guess this isn’t too bad. Perhaps I will learn a thing or two about training soldiers here... and they’ll be useful in training my clone of soldiers.’
He smiled and followed along.
Meanwhile, Nyssira’s aide gave her a questioning frown, and Nyssira merely shrugged.
The soldier led them to an isolated stone hut in the depths of the forest, barricaded by sandbags.
He asked them to wait outside the barricade and went in alone. Northern watched around while he waited. He noticed black markings on the ground.
On a second and deeper look, he could tell that the black markings were like black sand used to draw some kind of runes on the ground.
Northern continued to study them, and when he had looked around, having put the pieces together, he realized what rune it was.
’The Name of Fire?’
At the same time, the curtain of the hut moved, and someone came out of it. The person had to bend to come out of their own hut, and when they straightened, their height towered at no less than seven feet. With vermilion hair that looked like it was spilling everywhere.
Their eyes were like trapped balls of flame, and their muscles were the definition of a man. In fact, Northern for a second was sure that this was a man.
If not for the gigantic chest that mounted before her.
Her figure was impeccable.
He had never been one to pay attention to such details. At the same time, he had never truly encountered someone with such height and such a voluptuous figure.
Northern lowered his head respectfully. Right now, he was playing the role of a mercenary, so there was no need for him to be rude.
The lady looked at him for a few seconds and walked towards the sandbag. She sat on it in a disturbing manner and kept looking at him.
Slowly, Northern raised his brows and then met her gaze. It took a conscious effort not to widen his eyes in shock.
’Oh my days...’
Even though she was stunning, it was not her beauty that arrested Northern in this manner but rather her candid resemblance to someone whom he knew all too well.
A smirk spread on her lips.
"I know how beautiful I am, kid. Still, I’ll appreciate it if you stop gawking. Or do you want me to take you into my room?"
Northern’s attention instantly snapped back, and a cold frown settled on his face.
’I see... it runs in the family then?’
The lady brought out a pot pipe and sparked it with a single snap of her fingers. She sucked it in and exhaled black smoke for a moment. It wasn’t until then that she returned her focus to him.
"So why do you want to join the Valiant Gate Sentinels?"
Northern gave a straight answer.
"I am very curious about these Forest Hunters. If possible, I would like to kill as many of them as possible. I think being in the Gate Sentinels is an easy way to go about that."
The soldier who had brought them here looked at him and facepalmed.
Meanwhile, the lady laughed.
"At least this one tells the truth."
She stood up, towering before Northern.
"Child, do you know what it means to kill a monster?"
Northern almost blurted out: Are you fucking kidding me?
But he smiled warmly and said,
"I have vanquished a fair number of foes to become a Sage. Would it be an understatement to say yes?"
She glanced at the two behind him... then at the white wolf. When she saw the white wolf, her shoulders shuddered and her eyes shone greedily, but she sucked her lips in and forced her head to turn back to Northern.
"What about your friends?"
Northern shrugged.
"I am confident that they cannot die to some Forest Hunters."
The moment he spoke, something about the lady’s demeanor changed.
She became cold... and deadly.
"Hey..."
Her voice crawled out sinisterly.
"That’s an insult to the soldiers I’ve lost, you know."
Northern met the lady’s cold gaze with an unperturbed look.
"I didn’t mean it that way... I just mean to say I trust in my cohort’s ability to protect themselves. And even if they fail, I trust even more in my ability to protect them. This is not a malicious statement in any form. It’s just the truth."
Of course, to Northern, he simply spoke what was.
But to this General, who had lost several thousand men to these threats and failed to protect all those people, it was a painful insult to her ego and authority. Somehow, she seemed to be handling it well.
A grin split her face, and she said,
"You know what... how about you fight me? You win, and I’ll assign you as a Squad Leader. And if you lose—"
"Commander Vanessa, you can’t bully a newbie like tha—"
The soldier tried to butt in, but the lady did not listen. Instead, her gaze stuck to Mr. Fluffy.
"If you lose, though, I want that three-tailed pup. And you’ll be doing all three examinations!"
"Hey, kid, don’t accept it. You still have the chance to walk with your legs now."
Northern ignored the soldier completely and glanced at Mr. Fluffy, who gave the lady a condescending look.
He smiled and retorted,
"Fine. This makes things easier."
