Chapter 746: First truth of the World [Golden Ticket Chapter Bonus]
And before the Herald, on the barren wasteland, was Boreas’s head.
It rested against the ground, its expression frozen in eternal surprise, the golden eye still open and staring upward at the purple sky, as if trying to understand the reality of its own demise.
The body was nowhere to be seen, lost in the distance somewhere, but the head remained as undeniable evidence of what had transpired in the moments before the massacre began.
Jack had won.
The realization crystallized in Sapphira’s consciousness with absolute finality.
The victory achieved was not a conventional military triumph, subject to debate or analysis within political discourse. Rather, it represented an absolute and irreversible shift in circumstances, rendering the prior situation irrecoverable.
The Herald was bound. The army was being slaughtered by its own infiltrated forces. The lieutenants were absent, called away to help the Herald, but it didn’t matter because of Ren.
And there was nowhere to run that Jack’s influence didn’t reach.
Her internal monologue began, a cascade of thoughts that emerged from the depths of her consciousness with the force of something breaking through a barrier.
How had this happened? How had a single human orchestrated the complete annihilation of everything the Herald had sent to destroy him? How had she not seen this? How had she failed to recognize the infiltration, the deception, the absolute mastery of tactical warfare that this required?
She thought of Typhoon. The Dragon King, who had ruled for centuries with absolute authority.
The implications crashed through her consciousness with the force of a physical blow.
Typhoon knew something he wasn’t telling anyone else.
She made her decision in the span of a single heartbeat.
Flight.
Survival.
Those were the only metrics that mattered now in the face of absolute defeat. Everything else was irrelevant. Everything else was noise. The only thing that existed was the desperate need to escape, create distance, and to find safety in altitude and speed.
She wheeled her body in the air, her vibrant blue wings extending to their full span as she began to generate the lift necessary to escape the battlefield.
Her muscles contracted with the force necessary to achieve flight, her wings beating with powerful strokes that carried her higher and higher above the barren wasteland.
The sounds of combat below grew more distant and muted as she climbed toward the purple sky above.
The dragon’s screams became fainter. The sounds of impact became less distinct. The chaos of the battlefield became something remote and disconnected from her immediate reality.
She was going to make it. The altitude was increasing with each passing second. Her speed was accelerating as she moved away from the ground and toward the open sky. The edge of her perception was beginning to extend beyond the immediate battlefield.
She was going to escape this nightmare and return to Typhoon with the knowledge of what had transpired here. She was going to survive.
Suddenly, space distorted. The distortion was visible as a shimmer in the air, as if reality itself was being forced to bend under pressure that transcended normal physical law.
Clouds that had existed in the purple sky suddenly compressed, their molecular structure altered by the passage of something moving at velocities beyond normal physics.
The compression occurred in stages, each revealing that something moving at Mach 4 was passing through the atmosphere.
The clouds were pushed down and then stretched upward as the pressure wave expanded outward from the passage.
Sound itself fractured, creating a sonic boom that echoed across the barren wasteland and caused every dragon still alive to look upward in horror at what was occurring.
Caligo appeared in front of her at Mach 4 speed.
His form materialized from nothing, his massive dragon body suddenly existing in a location it had not occupied moments before.
The atmospheric pressure wave that accompanied his arrival struck Sapphira like a flying object at full speed, the kinetic force pushing her backward and downward with an intensity that her wings could barely resist.
The clouds that had compressed to accommodate his passage now expanded violently, creating a vortex of turbulence that threatened to tear her from her trajectory.
Her body spun, her wings flapping frantically in an attempt to maintain stability and control.
His claws closed around her throat before she could even process what was occurring, before her consciousness could register the transition from escape to capture.
His grip was absolute, his strength transcending her capacity to resist or overcome. He held her suspended in the air, his massive dragon form hovering with perfect stability despite the fact that he was carrying another creature of comparable size and weight.
“Coward,” Caligo said, his voice containing contempt that seemed to emanate from the very fabric of his being and permeate the air around them. “You flee when your duty was to stand and face what comes.”
Sapphira’s claws raked against his arm in desperate attempts to create distance or wound him badly enough that he would release his grip.
But her attacks registered as minor irritations against scales that had been refined through centuries of existence and countless battles.
Her strength, which was considerable by any measure, was utterly insufficient against the raw power that Caligo possessed.
“Fighting the Soul Warden is suicide,” she gasped, the words emerging with difficulty given the constriction of his grip around her throat. The desperation in her voice was evident, carried on the edges of each syllable. “He is beyond our capacity to oppose. He has bound creatures that transcend conventional understanding. We cannot win this fight!”
Caligo’s expression didn’t change. His golden eyes remained fixed on her with the intensity of a creature rendering absolute judgment, the final word on a question that had already been answered in the negative.
“Typhoon and the Soul Wardens have always had an arrangement,” Caligo said, his voice carrying the weight of ancient truth delivered with absolute certainty about the nature of their world. “The Soul Warden does not challenge the Dragon King. The Dragon King does not challenge the Soul Warden. Those are the rules that have governed this world for longer than you have existed as a conscious being.”
He paused, his gaze never wavering from hers despite her attempts to avert her eyes.
In that single moment, time seemed to stop as she thought about the words that had just been delivered to her.
Typhoon was not going to stop him.
Typhoon had sent Caligo to watch. Caligo was not here to oppose the Soul Warden but to see who this human was who piqued his interest.
How had she not seen it? How had she not recognized that the compact between Soul Warden and Dragon King was not an agreement of equals but a recognition of absolute hierarchy?
In her terror, she could only assume that Typhoon had knowingly let the Herald march into this slaughterhouse as a sacrifice.
She believed Typhoon had allowed the Soul Warden to break the contract simply because the Herald had failed to listen to his King’s warnings.
To her, the arrangement that had seemed like an eternal law was actually just a temporary ceasefire between two forces whose power was so vast that neither could afford to engage the other.
But her panic had blinded her to the truest horror of the situation.
Typhoon didn’t know. He hadn’t seen a Soul Warden since the last woman who claimed the title. He had sent the Caligo out merely because he wanted research on the boy, completely unaware that a true world-ender had just unlocked his chains.
Family vacation. I will still post chapters. TOD uncertain.
