“Haah!”
Iris’ sharp slash tore through the evil beast’s body.

“Honestly, this is never-ending.”
Right beside her, Usagi and Odis were doing the same.
Hearing Odis’ words, Iris sighed as she defeated another beast.
“What can we do? If we don’t keep eliminating them regularly, they’ll just multiply again.”
“I understand, but it’s still a pain. Honestly, I can’t even focus calmly on my magic research…”
Muttering under his breath, Odis continued to eliminate the evil beasts one by one with precise magical control, avoiding collateral damage.
(But their numbers have decreased significantly compared to the beginning.)
“True. They were everywhere at first, but now we’ve reduced their numbers so much that we have to search to find them. Don’t you think we can finally wrap this up?”
“Well, Gloria and the other remaining ‘Holy’ helped, too. Ah! This is the last one!”
Iris, who had been slaying evil beasts throughout their conversation, took a breath after cutting down the last one.
“Phew… But Odis is right. The number of evil beasts has really dwindled lately. Maybe we can space out the hunts a bit.”
“Finally… Honestly, I was worried we’d have to work through the New Year holidays.”
When Odis said this, Iris’s eyes widened slightly.
“Ah, come to think of it, it’s already that time of year.”
“Hey, hey… Setting me aside, Iris, you have relations with other nations, right? Isn’t forgetting that a bit problematic?”
As Odis said, Iris maintained connections with the leadership of various nations. Besides regularly reporting on evil beast exterminations, she made annual New Year’s greeting rounds to each country as the figure overseeing the “Holy.”
Upon hearing Odis’s words, Iris wore an exasperated expression.
“No, don’t just shrug it off. You two should interact with other people, too.”
“No way!”

Iris let out a huge sigh at the two of them.
“Sigh… I need help with the evil beast extermination reports, too. Oh well. I’ll ask Gloria and the others.”
“Please do.”
Iris sighed again at Odis, who nodded as if it were only natural.
“Well, Odis will probably just keep researching magic as usual. What are you doing over the New Year holidays, Usagi?”
“Now that you mention it… Elves like me don’t often visit relatives, but do you ever go back to your birthplace?”
Usagi snorted at the casual question.
(Hmph. Unfortunately, I have no such place to go.)
“What? What do you mean—?”
“Hey, Odis!”
Iris called out to stop Odis, who was about to press further.
But Usagi didn’t seem particularly bothered and continued on as usual.
(I was born a mutation. Even if I returned home, I’d only be treated as an outsider.)
“I see…”
Odis nodded in understanding as Usagi walked away.
“If there is nothing further, I shall be going. Should you need to defeat another evil beast, inform me.”
With that, Usagi leapt up with great momentum, stamped through the air, and vanished.
“Still as free-spirited as ever. Well, the matter of the evil beasts is settled for now. Given the nature of this world, we can’t prevent the ‘Evil’ from returning completely, but at this rate, it should take quite a while, so we can relax for now. Still, the evil beasts will likely increase again gradually. I’ll call you when we resume the hunt, so don’t get too absorbed in your research, Odis.”
“Well, I’ll do my best. Then, I too shall—”
Odis wore an expression that defied description before activating “Divine Authority” and teleporting away from the spot in an instant.
Iris watched him go, then suddenly spoke.
“Still, continuing to hunt the evil beasts just by ourselves will be tough. Next year, I’ll have to find new disciples and candidates for the ‘Holy’ and make adjustments. In any case, I suppose I should prepare my reports for the various countries…”

A few days had passed since my encounter with Oki-san.
Now, firmly in the midst of winter break, I had finally regained some settled days and was relaxing with my feet tucked under the kotatsu*.
[T/N: A kotatsu is a low table with a heater underneath and a blanket or quilt draped over it to trap warmth.]
“This is it… This is the everyday life I’ve been waiting for…”
“Nyaa.”
Stella the cat was relaxing beside me, her face poking out from under the kotatsu.
Yuti and Lexia-san were sitting side by side in front of me, doing their homework together.
“Yuti, use this formula here.”
“Understood. Then the correct answer is… this.”
“Not bad!”
Lexia-san seemed to be good at studying. Though she initially struggled with the writing portion in this world, once she got the hang of it, she would occasionally help Yuti with her studies.
As I watched them, Luna, who was also in the kotatsu, spoke up.
“Lexia teaching someone to study still feels incredibly off.”
“Hey, what’s that supposed to mean!?”
“Just look back at your usual behavior.”
“Huh? Was there a problem or something?”
“Haaahh…”
“Hahaha…”
Upon hearing Lexia-san’s words, Luna let out a big sigh.
Well, Lexia-san did give off a much livelier impression, after all.
As I thought that, Meiko came in carrying a bowl of mandarin oranges.
“Everyone, please have some.”
“Ah, oranges! They’re a fruit we don’t have in our world, but they’re sweet and delicious, aren’t they?”
Lexia-san immediately reached for an orange, peeled it with practiced ease, and began eating it right away.
Just then, Sara-san, who had been outside, entered the room.
“I’m back.”
“Ah, welcome home.”
Having successfully avenged the ancient gods, Sara-san had little left to do. So, partly to repay her debt to me, she decided to live with us.
Lately, though, she’s been out and about a lot, exploring modern Earth and reading books about world history at places like the library to learn about today’s world.
After washing her hands, she came into the kotatsu and let out a sigh of relief.
“Phew… This kotatsu thing is truly a wonderful invention…”
“Yeah, right? Once you try it, you can never go outside again.”
“Agreed. It’s a devilishly tempting device.”
Lexia-san slumped face-down on the desk. Yuti did the same, expressionless.
“Just knowing this invention exists makes me realize that humanity has truly made remarkable progress.”
“Just from a kotatsu!?”
Well, kotatsu were nice and all.
But, honestly, feeling humanity’s prosperity from a kotatsu… I didn’t know how to put it.
As I pondered this, the house intercom suddenly rang.
“I’ll answer it.”
“No, I’ll get it.”
“Eh? But…”
“Meiko’s been working nonstop since earlier. You should rest a bit. Besides, I was thinking I should get some exercise anyway soon.”
“O-okay.”
I got out from under the kotatsu and swapped places with Meiko. I headed straight for the front door.
As I did, I glanced back at Meiko. She was curled up in the kotatsu, her expression softened by its warmth.
I smiled involuntarily at the sight before opening the front door.
“Yes.”
“Ah, Yuuya-san!”
“Kaori?”
There she stood, dressed warmly.
“What’s the matter? It’s cold outside, so why don’t you come inside?”
“Ah, no! I’ll be leaving soon, so it’s fine!”
Kaori hurriedly said this, caught her breath, and then spoke again.
“Yuuya-san, would you like to visit the first shrine of the year together sometime?”
“First shrine visit?”
Come to think of it, I hadn’t gone in years.
“Sounds great! Where were you planning to go?”
“Um… I was thinking of going to the place where we went before, where Kagurazaka-san lives!”
“Ah!”
That was the shrine run by the Kagurazaka-san family.
It was quite large and would definitely be perfect for the first visit to a shrine.
Then, with a slight blush, Kaori continued.
“It would also be fun if we could go with Lexia-san and Kaede-san…”
“Yeah, let’s all go together!”

As I watched her leave and turned to go back inside, the intercom rang again.
“Huh? Kaori?”
Wondering if she had forgotten something, I opened the front door, and there they were.
“Ah…”
“U-um…”
“Eh… Youta, Sora…?”
Standing there were my twin younger siblings, Youta and Sora.
