Part 2

Meanwhile, thanks to the helicopter that Oki-san and the others had brought, we managed to escape the snowy mountains.

Kaede, Kaori, and Lexia-san, whose bodies weren’t particularly strong, were exhausted and slept soundly inside the helicopter while Oki-san spoke.

“Let me reintroduce myself. I’m Oki Hinako. Director of the Special Mutation Countermeasures Bureau.”

“Um, I’m Yuuya Tenjou.”

“I’m Luna.”

“I’m Merl.”

After Oki-san greeted us, we each introduced ourselves in turn.

Then, I immediately asked what was on my mind.

“So, um… Are you and the others government officials?”

I had asked before being rescued, but I still couldn’t believe it.

Oki-san nodded.

“That’s right. As I mentioned earlier, we’re an organization established to secretly handle mutations—phenomena beyond human comprehension that border on the supernatural—without the general public knowing. We came to Yuuya-kun and the others because we detected signs of a powerful mutation and rushed over.”

“Mutations…”

“Is that related to the blizzard?”

When Luna asked that, Oki-san nodded.

“Yes, the blizzard occurred because the power of the mutation gathered in the entire mountain range. However, by the time we arrived, the blizzard had subsided, and the signs of the mutation had vanished… Was that thanks to you, Yuuya-kun?”

Oki-san asked, seeming to already know the answer.

“Y-yes. That’s right.”

“Haa… Truly incredible. Even though it had just manifested and hadn’t unleashed its full power yet, that mutation had enough power to destroy an entire country…”

“R-really!?”

Realizing that I had just faced something far more dangerous than I had imagined, I broke out in a cold sweat.

Most attacks didn’t work on it. It felt like I was fighting nature itself.

The only thing that worries]d me was that, after I defeated that woman, some strange light was absorbed into my body.

“Um… when I defeated that mutation? A weird mass of light entered my body. Do you know anything about it?”

“Huh?”

Oki-san’s eyes widened at my words. She turned to someone nearby who seemed to be a subordinate, her expression turning slightly serious.

“Can you detect anything from Yuuya-kun’s body?”

“No, well, there are so many different powers mixed together inside him that it’s hard to pinpoint which one you mean. However, they seem to be harmonizing remarkably well, so I don’t foresee any issues.”

“Y-you can tell that much?”

Even though I hadn’t told them yet, Oki-san and the others had already detected that I possessed special powers, such as magic and divine authority.

However, it seemed they couldn’t pinpoint exactly what kind of power it was.

“I understand you rushed here because you sensed signs of mutation. But… how did you know about me? And about Luna and the others?”

Yes, Oki-san had known my name since she arrived at the snowy mountain. More than that, she knew that Luna and the others were from another world.

Then, Oki-san spoke.

“Well, as I explained earlier, we routinely deal with paranormal phenomena called mutations. However, this particular mutation was only confirmed about a decade ago. Of course, demons have been rampant in Japan for much longer. Though demons are slightly different from mutations.”

“I-I see…”

So, since Oki-san and her team operate in the hidden world, they know about demons, too.

But those demons are a different kind of entity from this mutation.

“Well, let’s set that aside for now. We conduct daily investigations into mutations, and your grandfather was one of our subjects.”

“Huh? My grandfather!?”

I gasped at the unexpected words, and Oki-san nodded.

“Yes, since you’ve had contact with people from another world, Yuuya-kun, you probably have some idea why. Your grandfather’s collection contains items that actually held the power of mutation.”

“Ah…”

Upon hearing Oki-san’s words, I wore an expression that was hard to describe.

…Well, of course.

The storage room in our house held various items Grandpa collected during his lifetime.

One of them was the Gate to Another World. The room was also filled with other items, some with their own stories, like the one that led to my encounters with Merl and Kuuya-san.

Hearing this, Luna, Yuti, and Merl all nodded simultaneously.

“The things in that room…”

“Unnatural. That room is overflowing with incredible power.”

“Yes… When I first entered that room, I was truly shocked.”

“Exactly. That room in Yuuya-kun’s house is where various powers, including mutation, are densely concentrated. It’s practically become a singularity.”

“I-is that okay? I mean, won’t it have a negative impact on the neighborhood?”

I already knew the storage room was extraordinary from past events, but hearing about it from a government organization made me wonder if it’s safe to continue using it.

Then, Oki-san wore an expression that was hard to describe.

“Normally, it would be a huge problem, but somehow all the powers seem to be harmonizing, and there’s no impact on the surroundings. In fact, if we interfere carelessly, who knows what might happen.”

“I-I see…”

“Still, we couldn’t just leave it alone, so we’ve been monitoring your grandfather and you all this time.”

“Huh? Monitoring!?”

Stunned by the unexpected words, Oki-san continued.

“We felt bad about it, but it’s our job. We needed to be ready to handle anything that happened.”

“I-I see. But that’s why you knew about me; you were watching.”

I was left with an indescribable feeling, but I understood why Oki-san recognized me.

They’d apparently been watching even back when Grandpa was alive.

Then, Oki-san gave a wry smile.

“Even so, your grandfather was truly remarkable. Normally, living in a place swirling with so many mutations and other powers, he should have been overwhelmed by them and ended up in a terrible state…”

“Ahaha…”

Come to think of it, Grandpa was astonishingly insensitive to that sort of thing. No, he wasn’t just insensitive; he apparently had no perception abilities whatsoever.

Maybe that’s why he wasn’t affected. Though even without perception, you’d think he’d naturally be influenced.

“Maybe he had a talent for attracting mutations and powers. Just like you, Yuuya-kun.”

“Me too?”

I blurted out in surprise. Oki-san chuckled amusedly.

“Yes. Didn’t you realize? You possess multiple immense powers, and even just one would be overwhelming for a normal human. You’d probably explode from the strain.”

“Scary?”

Huh? Was I that dangerous?

I frantically checked my body, but thankfully, there was no sign of an impending explosion.

Feeling uneasy, I asked Oki-san,

“So, um, what happens to us now? You were watching me, and you seem to know about Luna and the others, too.”

“Right. For now, you can just keep living as you have been. It’s fine.”

“Huh, really!?”

We were surprised by her unexpected words.

“Like I said earlier, we won’t interfere with Yuuya-kun’s home life. We wouldn’t want anything to happen because of that. At the same time, Yuuya-kun doesn’t need to leave the house either.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes, it’s possible that the house remains safe precisely because you and your grandfather are there…”

Apparently, our presence was the reason we could live normally in a house where such incredible power swirled. I couldn’t quite wrap my head around it, though.

“And what about you, Luna-san? I have one question for you. What do you intend to do with this country… no, this world?”

Facing Oki-san’s serious expression, Luna looked confused.

“Hmmm… Even if you ask what I intend to do, I’m merely the guardian of Lexia, who is sleeping there.”

“Guardian? Could it be that Lexia holds a high position in your world?”

“──She’s the princess of the Kingdom of Arcelia.”

When Luna said this, Oki-san and the other members of the Special Mutation Countermeasures Bureau all murmured in unison.

“A-a princess…”

“It’s shocking enough that she’s from another world, but royalty?”

“Why would someone like that be with Yuuya-kun?”

“Well, it’s a long story.”

I couldn’t avoid telling them, though, so I explained what had happened so far as concisely as possible.

Oki-san and the others were speechless.

“T-that’s unbelievable…”

“This isn’t just about defeating a Demon King. This is on another level entirely.”

“Fighting a god? What does that even mean?”

“So the afterlife actually exists?”

“No, no, no—you just casually mentioned fighting aliens, too? That’s insane!”

“Wait, you went to the future? And the future world is like something out of a movie!?”

“Why are you getting dragged into so many things?”

Sorry, but I’m the one who wants to know that the most!

The bureau members were completely flustered by my words.

Then, Oki-san opened her mouth, her expression hard to describe.

“For now, let’s set aside the fact that Yuuya-kun was involved in far more things than we ever imagined…”

“No, Director. This is too big to just set aside.”

“What can we do? It seems like it’s already over, and there’s nothing we can do about it!”

Oki-san blurted out that retort before immediately snapping back to reality and clearing her throat.

“Hmmm! Anyway, regarding Luna-san and the others… It seems they aren’t planning to invade this world. Is it safe to assume they’re just enjoying this world?”

“That’s the conclusion.”

“Affirmative. We’re having a good time.”

“…This leaves me wondering what we should do next. Ideally, we’d like to use this as an opportunity to consider exchanges with the other world. Currently, however, Yuuya-kun is the only one who can communicate with them directly.”

Oki-san paused to think for a moment before speaking again.

“For now, we’ll handle Luna-san and the others’ household registration paperwork here.”

“Eh, is that okay!?”

Come to think of it, they spent all this time without reporting to the country.

Well, they couldn’t explain it, so there was nothing they could do.

So, Oki-san’s words were incredibly welcome.

“Yes, and just in case, I’ll secure the land around Yuuya-kun’s house too.”

“Huh?”

I was speechless at her casual announcement, but Oki-san continued.

“Don’t worry. Once we acquire the surrounding land, I’ll give it to Yuuya-kun.”

“No, no, no, no, no! What do you mean? You’re giving me land?”

“It’s necessary to prevent harm to the surrounding residents if anything happens. Besides, quite a few people seem to be living in Yuuya-kun’s house right now. Having more land can’t hurt, right?”

“Well, that’s true. But you don’t have to go out of your way to give me land. The government should manage it…”

“Didn’t I tell you? We can’t interfere. The people there, like Luna-san, seem to have a connection to the things that were originally in Yuuya-kun’s house, so it’s not a problem for them. But we’re different. If we get even slightly close, it could upset the balance of the house as it is now.”

“W-well, even if you say that…”

But this was too big of an issue to just accept with a simple “Yes, understood.”

However, the atmosphere already felt like refusal wasn’t an option. As I found myself instinctively clutching my head, Oki-san turned her gaze toward Merl.

“And you’re an alien, correct?”

“Yes.”

“Are you here on this planet, like Luna-san and the others, simply to live a normal life?”

Merl glanced my way for just an instant before nodding and looking somewhat awkward.

“Yes. I thought I’d try to learn this planet’s culture.”

“Really?”

“T-truly.”

Merl blatantly averted her gaze.

When I asked her before, she said something about learning the culture of this planet. Could that have been a lie?

Surprised by Merl’s reaction, I looked at Luna, who looked at me with an exasperated expression.

“Sigh… You’re just slow.”

“Affirmative.”

“Huh!?”

I was bewildered by how the conversation had shifted to make me seem at fault. However, Oki-san realized that further questioning would yield no answers, so he sighed.

“Sigh… Well, fine. You don’t seem to be acting strangely for now. But, just like Yuuya-kun, you’re under surveillance, so please understand that.”

“Understood.”

As I continued talking with Oki-san and the others, we arrived at the hospital reserved for government officials. It was the one they usually used.

Just then, Kaede and the others woke up.

“Huh? Where are we?”

“It’s a hospital. The rescue team came right after that.”

“Oh, so we’re safe for now. That’s good.”

Kaede smiled, looking relieved.

Then, the medical staff rushed over and took Kaede, Kaori, and the others straight to the examination room.

Those of us with stronger constitutions, like Luna and me, headed to the testing room with Oki-san.

“The quick check seemed fine, but we’ll confirm everyone’s health status just to be sure. Also, leave contacting your parents to us.”

I wasn’t too concerned, but Kaori and Kaede’s parents would surely worry. I was worried about how to explain things when it seemed that Oki-san and the others would handle that, too.

After that, we underwent various tests, including blood work. For now, there didn’t seem to be any particular physical effects, so Oki-san and the others offered to take us home.

“We don’t have the detailed results yet, but it seems that Luna-san and the others from the other world don’t have significant differences in their bodily structures compared to ours. However, Merl-san is an alien and has organs we don’t recognize, as well as quite a different body composition. Whether current Earth science can fully explain those functions is unclear…”

“I-I see.”

Honestly, Merl does have phosphorescent sparks flying from her hair. Being told that her body structure is different from ours makes perfect sense.

Still, since she looks the same, it feels a bit odd.

After dropping off Kaori, Kaede, and the others, we finally arrived at my house. As Oki-san was leaving, she said this:

“Oh, right. About what happens next… I’ll be coming by periodically to check on Yuuya-kun.”

“Huh?”

“Even though things are calm for now, you never know what might happen at Yuuya-kun’s home, given that he became a singularity. It’s just a precaution. I’ve been monitoring things before, but now that we’ve actually met face-to-face…”

“I-I see.”

When I nodded at Oki-san’s words, she wore a serious expression.

“Also, lately, for some reason, the mutation activity has increased. There’s a possibility it could affect Yuuya-kun’s house, too.”

“Is that so?”

“For now, we’ve been able to handle it somehow. Anyway, I’ll be counting on you going forward, okay?”

“R-right.”

After I said that, Oki-san winked and left.

As I watched her leave blankly, Lexia-san spoke up.

“Well… I thought it was just going to be a simple trip, but we’ve been through quite a lot, haven’t we? I’m glad we made it back safely.”

“Y-yeah. Personally, I’d prefer to live a more peaceful life.”

“Impossible, I guess.”

“Impossible, isn’t it?”

“Impossible.”

“Probably impossible.”

“That’s harsh!”

After being told it was impossible by everyone, I hung my head in defeat.
