Chapter 2 – Jungle Expedition
Part 1
And the next morning.
“Now, let’s find a way to stop the eruption of Mount Aurea… jungle expedition team!”
Lexia points to the jungle stretching out in front of them.
The four of them are dressed in the expedition team look they found in the town.
Short sleeves and short pants for easy movement. They wore green ties around their necks, and each had binoculars and compasses hanging from them.
Giselle raised her hand in confusion.
“U-uh, what in the world is this outfit…?”
“Of course, we are dressed as explorers. It is important to dress well to get in the right mood! They say that sickness starts in the mind, you know?”
“Isn’t that wrong…?”
“B-but yes, it certainly makes you feel like an explorer!”
Tito’s tail wagged enthusiastically.
However, an eerie roar echoed from the jungle, and she cried out, “Hyah!” Her fur stood on end.
“Ugh, that voice sounds so unpleasant…”
“Not as bad as the Great Devil’s Nest, but it’s quite atmospheric.”
The darkness behind the dense trees was stagnant and dull.
Giselle cleared her throat as well.
“A jungle where no one has set foot for a long time… What on earth is waiting for us?”
Lexia patted Giselle’s back, who looked nervous.
“No matter what happens, it’s going to be okay. After all, we’re here!”
“Lexia-san… Yes!”
“Well then, let’s go, explorers!”
The four of them stepped into the jungle.
They waded through waist-high grass.
The ground was damp, and from time to time, there was a strange chirping sound, like that of a monstrous bird.
Luna, who was leading the way, suddenly stopped.
“It’s a swamp, we have to go around it.”
“Giselle-san, watch your step!”
“Y-yes.”
Just as they were about to pass the swamp.
“Gikiiiiiiiiiiii!”
A giant leech jumped out of the swamp.
“Kyaaaaaaa!”
Before the leech could attack Giselle, Luna’s string flashed.
“Boisterous Dance!”
Swish, swish, swish!
“Gikiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii…!”
The sharp strings sliced the giant leech into tiny pieces, leaving no trace.
“Phew, that was a surprise! As expected from you, Luna!”
“Th-that was a Bloody Leech!”
“You know about this, Giselle?”
“Y-yes, I’ve heard about it in the legends. It’s a terrifying monster that possesses people who wander into the forest and kills them by sucking their blood. It is said that once it possesses a person, it will not leave until its prey is dead… In fact, it is said that Bloody Leech is the one who kills the most people in this dense forest…!”
Luna shrugged lightly at the surprised Giselle.
“Compared to our previous enemies, it’s like twisting a baby’s hand.”
“A-amazing… you really are strong!”
When Giselle let out an exclamation, Tito’s cat ears perked up.
“It’s coming!”
“Gigigi, gigigigigi…!”
“Ukikikiki, kikikii!”
Behind the trees and above their heads, numerous signs of presence appeared.
Before they knew it, the four of them were surrounded by a swarm of monsters.
“N-no way… there are so many…!”
Giselle backed away, turning pale.
But Lexia and the others laughed.
“There they are at last!”
“It’s quite a spectacle to see so many people, regardless of race, gathered here.”
The jungle, untouched by humans for many years, seems to have developed its own ecosystem, teeming with monsters in the form of various beasts and insects.
“Gi, gigigigiii…!”
The bloodthirsty monsters are slowly closing the circle.
“O-oh…!”
As Giselle involuntarily backed away, a monkey-shaped monster jumped down from above.
“Kikikiii!”
“Kyaaaah!”
Before the attack could reach them, Tito jumped back with Giselle in his arms.
“Are you hurt, Giselle-san?”
“Y-yes, thank you…! But I didn’t expect Black Lemur to be here at all…!”
“Kikii, ukikikiii!”
Giselle’s voice shakes as she looks up at a group of monkeys making deafening cries in the trees.
“Black Lemurs are voracious and intelligent, and legend has it that a single Black Lemur can destroy an entire settlement in the blink of an eye….! Not only that, but Death Pede and Killer Bee… such vicious monsters attack in packs! I knew this jungle was too dangerous…!”
Giselle turned pale, but Lexia opened her mouth cheerfully.
“A herd of this size is no big deal! Let’s get rid of them quickly!”
“Ehh? B-but even for Luna-san and Tito-san, this is really…!”
However, Luna and Tito are calm and composed.
“There are a lot of them, but, well, they are cute compared to the Great Devil’s Nest.”
“Apparently they’re at the top of the food chain in this jungle, but let me tell you, there’s always something higher up!”
“Gigiiiiiiiiiiii!”
The excited monsters, faced with food they hadn’t eaten in a long time, all raged at the same time.
The four of them faced the swarm of monsters that let out a terrifying roar.
***
“Ukiki, kikikiiii!”
“Oh, you’re so fast!”
Black shadows flew over Lexia and Luna’s heads.
The Black Lemurs, which looked like monkeys, moved freely among the dense trees, attacking as if they had just remembered something.
They were so numerous and agile that it was difficult to see them.
“They’re fast, they don’t come down, and I feel like they’re making fun of me!”
The monkeys squealed teasingly when they saw Lexia’s angry face.
“Ukyaa, ukyaa, ukyaa”‘
“Geez! Just as I thought, they are making fun of me! Luna, do it!”
“Of course I will… but it’s too much effort to destroy them one by one, let’s deal with them all together. Lexia, can you provoke them?”
“Huh? All right! Uh…”
Lexia looked around and picked up a reasonable rock.
“This one looks good! Eeii!”
She swung the stone and threw it at the group of monkeys.
But her best shot was easily dodged.
Not only that, but the monkeys bared their teeth and let out a mocking squeal.
“Ukikikiiii!”
“What the heck, geez!”
“Hah, why are you the one being provoked… or rather, you’re not very good at throwing, are you?”
“That’s not true!”
The two of them argued vigorously.
Seeing this as an opportunity, the group of monkeys rushed at them all at once.
“Gikiiiiiiiii!”
However.
“──Prison!”
Luna muttered softly as if waiting for the monkeys to move.
In an instant, the strings are stretched out like a cage, trapping the group of monkeys.
“Gyaa, gyaa!”
“Sorry, but I don’t have time to play with you.”
The moment Luna grabbed the air, the strings came together and cut the monkeys into small pieces.
“Giigiiiiiii…!”
The swarm dissolved into the void, leaving behind a final scream.
“That’s amazing, you did a complete sweep! As expected from my Luna!”
“We’re still surrounded, don’t let your guard down!”
As Luna spoke, the empty space behind Lexia distorted.
──Assassin’s Snake.
It is a black serpent that lives in the danger zone.
Despite its enormous size (over 5 meters), it attacks adventurers by surprise, using its ability to block their presence.
Keeping its appearance a secret, the Assassin Snake opened its mouth.
“Lexia!”
“Huh?”
“Gishaaaaaaah!”
At the same time, the Assassin Snake leaped at them; Luna released a bundle of strings.
“Spiral!”
Gyururururu!
Grabbing Lexia’s side, the bundle of strings whirled in a drill-like motion and thinned out.
With a roar, the strings penetrated the Assassin Snake’s mouth to the tip of its tail.
“Gishaaaaaaaah!”
The skill unraveled, and a huge black body appeared, then dissolved into particles of light and disappeared.
“That’s a pretty good skill, but… you didn’t pack it well enough.”
Luna pulled on a string attached to her finger and retrieved the strings that had been secretly stretched around her.
Once the battle began, she would be ready to react immediately if a monster approached and touched the strings.
“Well, I think we’ve taken care of most of this area.”
Luna exhaled, and Lexia jumped at her.
“That’s amazing, Luna!”
“Le-Lexia!”
As she hugged Luna, Lexia was so happy and excited.
“I have never seen such a strong monster defeated in such a short time! I knew you were the strongest, the coolest, and the sweetest! That’s my Luna!”
“I know, I know, get away from me.”
With red cheeks, Luna pulled away from Lexia.
***
“Gigi, gigigigi…!”
“Hyii…!”
Giselle paled in front of the monster, which made an eerie screeching sound.
The one standing in front of Giselle was a giant centipede.
“Death Pede…!”
It was a ferocious monster with sturdy black armor that devoured its prey, undaunted by the attacks of even the most skilled adventurers.
The centipede attacks Giselle, who crawls to her feet.
“Gigiiiiiiiiii!”
“Kyaaaaaaaaaaaa!”
Giselle closes her eyes involuntarily.
But before the centipede’s fangs can reach her.
“Giselle-san!”
Tito rushes to the scene and leaps high into the air, kicking trees in the process.
And then…
“Thunder Roaring Claws・Extreme!”
Twisting and turning her body, she slashed down with a torrent of power.
“Giiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!?”
The centipede was crushed and destroyed by the tremendous force.
“O-one hit the Death Pede, whose armor is said to rival that of Mithril…!”
Tito landed on the ground and smiled at Giselle.
“Sorry, I was busy with the other herd and it took me a while to get here… Are you hurt?”
“N-no problem, thanks!”
“Giiiiiiiiii!”
The sound of snarling wings echoed halfway through Giselle’s words.
The two looked up to see a swarm of red bees coming at them like bullets.
“Giiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!”
“! Killer Bee…!”
Giselle’s face twitches.
The Killer Bee is a ferocious monster that can even prey on Bloody Bear and is a feared natural enemy of adventurers.
They are fast and persistent, and their agility allows them to dodge attacks, and when their enemies are exhausted, they swarm around them and fire their poisonous stingers at them.
The killer bees form a huge swarm and close in on the two.
“There are so many of those killer bees! It’s so impossible to deal with them all…!”
But Tito laughed reassuringly and said, “It’ll be fine!”
“Giselle-san, please pick up all the stones and throw them in front of me!”
“Eh? O-okay…!”
Giselle hurriedly gathered the stones at her feet and threw them in front of Tito.
Tito swung her claws at the stone in the air.
“It looks like you’re very fast, but can you still avoid this──Claw Piercing Bullet!”
Pew, pew, pew!
The stone is shot out with the force of a bullet.
In addition, the stone is shattered by the powerful blow, and the debris is spread over a wide area like a shotgun blast.
“Gigiiiiii!”
The swarm of bees is shot down helplessly by the tremendous force of the debris.
“Th-that’s amazing…!”
Giselle was stunned by the brilliant technique, and her eyes widened.
“Tito-san, watch out!”
One of the bees had barely escaped the attack and was circling behind Tito.
“!”
“Giiiiiiiiiiiiii!”
A killer bee, its eyes stained with rage at the death of its comrade, charged at Tito with tremendous speed.
Giselle immediately activated her spirit art.
“Answer me…!”
A moment later, the ivy tangled in the tree grew.
They intertwined like a net, blocking the path of the killer bee.
“Giiiii…!”
The bee caught in the ivy’s web squirms.
The next moment…
“Claw Flash!”
Tito ran through and slashed at the bee.
“Gigi, gi…!”
Leaving behind a faint voice, the bee turned into a black shadow and disappeared.
Giselle was relieved.
“Th-thank goodness…”
“Thank you, Giselle-san!”
“Kyaa!”
Tito hugged Giselle.
Her eyes sparkled with excitement, and she held Giselle’s hand.
“Thank you for saving my life! It’s amazing, I didn’t know you could do that…!”
“Ah… I was so engrossed that I just had to do it… but I’m so glad Tito-san is okay.”
“Ah, thank you very much! At first, I thought the jungle was dark, damp and scary, but with Giselle-san, who has nature on her side, everything will be fine!”
“Fufu, thank you.”
Giselle smiled happily as Tito gave her a sincere smile.
