Part 2
Luna followed Douglas into the castle.
When they reached the basement, Farouk was breathing heavily.
His forehead was covered with sweat, and he looked up at the low ceiling with his eyes half open.
“Your Majesty Farouk…”
As Luna stood there, Douglas called out in a low voice.
“His Majesty would like to speak with you alone. I will wait outside. Please listen to the words of His Majesty.”
Douglas’ presence disappeared.
Luna walked over to the bed.
“Your Majesty…”
Farouk turned to face Luna, startled by her voice.
“…You…”
“…Your Majesty Farouk, I…”
But Farouk raised his emaciated hand as if to interrupt Luna’s words.
His blue eyes were clouded as if they were covered with something.
“…I’m sorry, but I can hardly see anymore…”
“!”
“The time I have left is short… I have something I want to tell you…”
He said this as if he was straining and drew what looked like a comb in the air with his trembling fingers.
After a few more incantations, a blue light appeared in the air.
The light contracted on Farouk’s hand and turned into an old key.
“! A key appeared out of thin air…! What is this…?”
The key was made of a material I had never seen before, and it had a blue pattern engraved on it.
Farouk told me between gasps.
“This is the key to an ancient weapon.”
“Wha…! An ancient weapon… did it really exist…!”
Farouk nodded to the astonished Luna.
“That’s right. This is no fairy tale… In our country, there is a terrible ancient weapon that was created during the era of the Nayuta Empire, and it still lies dormant. The only person who can control this ancient weapon is the person who possesses the key that has been passed down through the royal family for generations… By letting the blood of the royal family flow into the key, that person will become the owner of the ancient weapon and can use it as he pleases.”
A piercing light appeared in the emaciated king’s eyes.
“However, the mission of the royal family of Rastel Kingdom is not to use the Ancient Weapon for selfish reasons. Our mission is to continue to seal it away so that this terrible weapon will not be misused by anyone. The power of the Ancient Weapon is so great that it could burn the world to the ground. Not only that but it is equipped with advanced defense mechanisms that make it impossible to destroy… That is why the Rastel royal family has inherited the key from generation to generation and has continued to protect the terrible weapons so that no one can get their hands on them.”
Farouk hands the key to Luna with a shaking hand.
“I don’t have much time left… I entrust this to you…”
“B-but…”
“Please, there is no one else I can rely on… You must never give this key to the wicked. And… you must never give it to my brother──”
As the king was about to say this, a sharp sound ripped through the air.
“?!”
Luna jumped in surprise.
In an instant, a black tear tore through the space where Luna was standing, and the key was knocked out of the king’s hand.
“Ugh, gghh…!”
“Your Majesty…!”
The key flew across the stone floor.
At the entrance to the underground passage, someone picked it up.
“Haha, hahaha! I finally got it!”
“Douglas, you…!”
Douglas, who was holding a whip in his hand, smiled wickedly as he was spotted by Luna’s gaze.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, the moment when my foolish brother gives the key to the princess…! With this key, I can control the ancient weapon as I please…! The world will be mine!”
“You can’t!”
Luna prepares her string to restrain Douglas.
“(He’s the king’s brother, after all, so I have to be careful not to hurt him…)”
But the next moment, Douglas pushes the wall in.
The whole basement starts to vibrate.
“What is this…!”
Luna braces herself with Farouk behind her, but in an instant, something comes down from the ceiling, trapping Luna and the king.
“What…! This isn’t just a basement…!”
Luna gasped but quickly regained her composure.
“But when I use my strings. Boisterous Dance!”
Swosh, swosh, swosh!
The sharp strings danced wildly towards the bars.
However,
Bam!
A black bolt of lightning rips through the bars, repulsing the strings.
“What…?”
Douglas laughs triumphantly at the startled Luna.
“This is useless. This is one of the legacies of ancient civilization. It’s a prison that never lets its prey escape. I discovered it by chance while investigating the secrets of the ancient weapon, and I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to use it, but… Kukuku, it worked better than I expected.”
“Kuh, you planned everything…! Could it be that you’re the one who made His Majesty Farouk sick?
“Oh, you’re good at guessing.”
Douglas pulled out a small bottle.
“The poison I gave my brother is an ancient poison that even those who know poisons cannot detect. Unfortunately, if he does not take this medicine, he will soon be doomed to rot underground. But don’t worry, I will use the ancient weapon properly.”
Douglas looked down at the key in his hand.
“I am fully qualified to be the owner of this key. After all, unlike the fake princess, I have the blood of the royal family flowing through my veins!”
“Douglas, you… you pretended not to listen to my words, but you already knew that I wasn’t the real princess!”
“Yes, that’s right. I threw the real princess into the Valley of Storms with my own hands when she was still a child!”
“Wha… what…!?”
“Everything was for this moment… after a long time of waiting, the time has finally come! Haha, hahaha!”
Douglas sliced his fingertip with a knife.
He let the blood drip from the wound onto the key.
At that moment, the key began to glow.
The blue pattern disappeared, and an eerie black pattern appeared in its place.
“Th-That’s…!”
“Kuku, haha! This key is now under my control! No one will be able to do anything with it!”
As Douglas drew a pattern in the air, the key disappeared into a black light.
“Well, we were still in the middle of the celebration. Kukuku… What a fitting stage for me to become king of the world, celebrating the revival of an ancient weapon. Those incompetent nobles and foolish subjects who failed to recognize me as the king’s vessel… I will let those foolish people know that it is my power and terror that should rule this world!”
“Kuh, you…!”
Douglas looks at Luna with cold eyes as she stares back at him.
“Your role here is over, false princess. This cell can never be opened from the inside. You will have to get along with the old man and watch the world fall into my hands… if you live that long.”
“Wait!”
Douglas leaves Luna and Farouk in the dungeon and goes up the stairs.
From the upper floor, Douglas can be heard shouting.
“Everyone, listen carefully! The king has lost his mind! That princess was a fake, and she poisoned the king! Not only that, but this villain is also trying to take over the kingdom by taking advantage of the weak king! From now on, I, the king’s younger brother, will take over his duties, and no one will be allowed to pass through here!”
“Y-yes!”
The sound of footsteps came and went, and the door was closed, the sound fading away.
In the basement, only Farouk’s labored breathing remained.
“I’ve got to get out of here somehow… Boisterous Dance!”
Luna released her string again, but it was still repelled by the lightning.
“Damn, this lightning will not be easy to deal with! As I thought, it’s an ancient technology that’s shrouded in mystery… If I don’t do something, His Majesty the King will…”
Farouk seemed to be in a daze, and all he could do was repeat his ragged breathing.
Luna took a deep breath and thought.
“I can’t believe this ancient weapon really exists…! Douglas will use that ancient weapon to take control of the world. Even if we take the key away from him, the ancient weapon will only recognize the owner as someone from the Rastel royal family… What in the world should I do…!”
At that moment, a familiar voice came from the distance.
”””””Luna-sama~!”””””
“Wh-Whose voice is that…?”
Luna looked up in surprise.
She could hear voices coming from the top of the stairs.
“H-hey, you can’t go down there!”
“Get out of the way! We have to save Luna-sama!”
“If you get in my way, I’ll fry you in a frying pan! (Bang!)”
“Whoa! S-stop it!”
“We’re not going to stop! Come on, broom attack! (Bam, bam, bam!)”
“Ouch! Enough of this.”
“If you don’t listen, I’ll hit you with the tray! (Bam, bam, bam!)”
“Aaaaah, my ears!?”
“W-what’s going on?!”
After a commotion, several sets of footsteps came running down the stairs.
And then…
“Luna-sama! We’ve come to help you──!”
“Y-you girls!”
The ones who appeared were the maids who had been taking care of Luna.
They see Luna and cheer.
“Thank goodness you’re safe!”
“What is this? This castle has a basement dungeon?”
“Oh, His Majesty Farouk is here? His complexion looks bad. Is he okay?!”
Luna looks at the maids, who are making a fuss.
“Why are you here…? Didn’t Douglas issue an emergency decree?”
“Yes, when we heard that the castle was suddenly in an uproar, Douglas-sama said that Luna-sama was actually a terrible villain or something like that… but we absolutely, absolutely, absolutely knew that wasn’t true, so we came right away to save you!”
“There is no way that Luna-sama would poison Farouk-sama and try to trick him!”
“That’s right, we know best how pure and kind-hearted Luna-sama is!”
“Even if Luna-sama isn’t a real princess, it doesn’t matter! We’ll always be on Luna-sama’s side, no matter what!”
“Everyone…”
The maids smiled reassuringly at Luna, whose voice trembled involuntarily.
“Don’t worry, we’ll get you out of here soon!”
“Hey, this cage has no door!”
“Ehh? Then how are you going to get it open?”
Luna shouted from between the bars.
“Douglas said that this prison can never be opened from the inside. That means it can be opened from the outside. There must be a device somewhere that can unlock it. When he lowered the bars, Douglas pushed in the bricks there…”
“I understand!”
“I’ll definitely find it!”
The maids begin to search the walls and floor.
“Hmm, it’s so dark in here!”
“Is it here? …No, nothing happens.”
“Is it another mechanism for raising and lowering the cage?”
“(Crash!) No, I broke it!”
“Phew, it’s so humid down here, I can’t stop sweating.”
Luna, who could not bear to see the maids in such a state, called out to them.
“You must be hot, moving around so much. Why don’t you hang your outer garment on the candlestick that you don’t use?”
“Oh, Luna-sama, you are so kind to take care of us even though you are in such a difficult situation yourself!”
“Yes, we’ll do that!”
The maid hung her outer clothes on one of the candlesticks on the wall──.
Click!
The cage rose with a heavy clatter.
“What?!”
“It’s amazing, the cage is gone!?”
“Is it the power of love?”
“Thank you, you saved me!”
The maid offered Luna her clothes.
“I brought Luna-sama’s clothes! I love the way you look in a dress, but I thought it might be a little difficult to move around in…”
“Leave the king to us and go!”
“Your friends are probably waiting for you!”
“Ah, please! I’ll definitely stop the younger brother!”
Luna quickly changed her clothes and left Farouk in the care of the maids, then ran up the stairs.
