Chapter 3 – Ancient Weapon
Part 1
And then, on the morning of the celebration.
Lexia and the others looked at each other across the square.
“We’re finally going to get into the castle! Everything is going according to plan!”
“Yes, the preparations are complete!”
“We’re going to put on the best show possible to get Luna-san back.”
In addition to their circus costumes, the three of them also wore masks like those used at masquerade balls.
These were masks that covered the upper half of the face, perfect for hiding Lexia and Selene’s true identities.
“Well then… let’s go to the castle!”
They loaded the Storm Bear with the large and small props and then covered it with a cloth.
As the group walked down the main street, the people on the street cheered.
“Ah, it’s the Exciting Sparkling Circus Troupe!”
“They’re going to the celebration party now!”
“The circus yesterday was great! Good luck with your performance!”
In just one day, Lexia and the others had become the talk of the entire capital.
“Thanks everyone, we’ll do our best!”
“Hehe, it makes us so happy to have your support!”
“Fufu, everyone will be surprised to learn that the Princess of the Kingdom of Arcelia was the one who so brilliantly controlled Storm Bear.”
“Oh, if you say so, then Selene is a princess too!”
“Oh, that’s right.”
They wave to the cheering crowd and march to the front of the castle.
Lexia stands tall as she addresses the gatekeeper standing at the castle gate.
“We’re the Exciting Sparkling Circus Troupe! Let us through!”
“Oh, we’ve been waiting for you!”
When they showed the pass given to them by the Master of Ceremonies, the gatekeeper opened the gate for them.
They entered the castle with dignity, having been literally turned away at the gate just a few days before.
“We did it! We’ve passed the first hurdle!”
“Wow, that’s amazing!”
As they passed through the castle gate, the maids and soldiers crowded around the windows to catch a glimpse of the circus troupe making a grand entrance.
“Oh, it’s the Exciting and Sparkling Circus Troupe that has become so popular in the royal capital!”
“I’ve heard rumors about them, but they really are adorable!”
“What’s that big cloth? A carriage?”
Lexia smiles like a naughty child as she is showered with looks of admiration and wonder.
“Fufu, the infiltration mission was a huge success!”
“Everyone seems to be looking forward to it!”
“Now, where is Luna? She’s going to be so surprised when she sees us making a circus! I can’t wait to show her!”
“We came to rescue Luna-san, but it looks like our objective has changed…?”
Meanwhile, Selene looked around thoughtfully.
“Ah, I remember that garden, that tower… I think…”
Memories of the time when she was wrapped in deep love and innocently studying and playing came back, and tears welled up in her blue eyes.
The princess, who had been burdened with a cruel fate at a young age, had returned to the place where she belonged after a long and arduous journey.
“Father, Diana has returned. We will see each other again soon, so please be safe until then…”
She held her head up to stop the tears from falling.
Lexia smiled at Selene.
“Don’t worry, Selene! Let’s all beat Douglas to a pulp and solve everything in style!”
“Yeah!”
At that moment, the Master of Ceremonies greeted them.
“Oh, everyone from the Exciting Sparkling Circus Troupe, we’ve been waiting for you!”
The Master of Ceremonies said happily, leading the group into the courtyard.
“This courtyard will be the site of the circus. It is a garden that is not regularly used, so I am sorry that it is not well maintained, but please feel free to use it. Oh, it looks like you’re going to need some help setting up the stage for the circus. I’ll bring about 20 soldiers.”
“Thank you, but we can manage on our own!”
“Is that so? Well, if you need anything, don’t hesitate to ask.”
The Master of Ceremonies bowed politely and left.
“Alright, let’s get the stage set up right away!”
“Yes!”
This time, they wanted to hold the circus under the blue sky without a tent.
The three of them set up the trapeze and the balance beam.
“Well, as I recall, the circus performance was supposed to take place right after the celebration began! This rock is in the way. Thunderclap Claw! (BOOM!)”
“Yes, it’s a celebration party, so they want it to be really exciting! Hey, Selene, can you cut this up nicely?”
“Yes. Luna-san’s first public appearance will also take place at the same time. Crimson Slash! (BANG!)”
While exchanging light-hearted conversation, they continue to perform their techniques, turning the courtyard into a circus venue.
“H-hey, what is that…! They crushed that huge rock so easily…!”
“That tree was cut into pieces in an instant? That tree is no ordinary tree!”
“The rough garden is becoming more and more beautiful! And to think that three people could make such a beautiful stage…! Who exactly are they?”
The soldiers watched the three girls with trepidation, who were building the stage at unprecedented speed.
“Phew, it’s finished!”
“Yes!”
Lexia and the others looked around at the courtyard and the stage, which had been completely prepared to their satisfaction.
The stage for the circus was ready.
And finally, it was time for the performance.
As the crowd gathered in the courtyard buzzed with anticipation, Selene glanced quickly at the seats reserved for the nobles and high-ranking officials.
“Looks like Douglas isn’t here.”
“That’s better! After we get Luna back, we’ll give him a good beating! I won’t forgive him for throwing a young Selene into the Valley of Storms and separating us from Luna!”
At that moment, the trumpets sounded loud, and the buzz of the crowd died down like a receding wave.
“Now it’s time for the ceremony to begin! We’re going to take Luna in a blaze of glory!”
“Yes! We practiced a lot, so we are ready!”
“Now, where is Luna-san?”
As Selene looked around, Lexia suddenly pointed to the balcony.
“Look, over there!”
“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for waiting. The First Princess of the Kingdom of Rastel, Her Highness Princess Diana, is here!”
At the signal of the Master of Ceremonies, the lace curtain opens.
And on the balcony, Luna appears in a beautiful dress.
Everyone gasps at the sight.
Her lips are slightly moist, and her eyes are a cool blue.
Her deep blue dress was as graceful as flowing water and complemented Luna’s beautifully toned figure.
The modest tiara on her silver hair, shining like moonlight, made Luna’s well-proportioned face even more beautiful.
The crowd gasped at her noble and refined appearance.
“Oh, is that Princess Diana, who was said to be missing?”
“My goodness, how beautiful she is…!”
Lexia and the others couldn’t help but exclaim.
“Luna looks so beautiful! She always looks beautiful, but today she’s especially beautiful!”
“Wow, she’s glowing! Luna-san is amazing for being able to fit into a dress like that…”
“Yeah, she looks like a moon goddess… or a delicate flower spirit…”
Meanwhile, Luna was confused in front of the crowd with her sparkling eyes.
“T-this is the first time I’ve received so much attention… and everyone seems so surprised. Have they noticed that I’m not used to wearing makeup or clothes…?”
Lexia waved her hand at Luna as if her happiness had exploded.
“Luna! We’re here!”
“Le-Lexia-san, you can’t!”
“Wha-?!”
Luna leaned out of the balcony instinctively.
“Could it be… Lexia and Tito, and even Selene? Could it be that the Exciting and Sparkling Circus Troupe that everyone in the capital is talking about is them?”
She glanced around quickly, but fortunately, the crowd was too distracted by Luna’s cuteness to notice Lexia’s outburst.
She couldn’t help but press her forehead.
“I was worried that they would sneak in one day with some outrageous method, but I never imagined that they would meet me so openly as a circus troupe…! Or rather, I should have suspected them from the name Exciting Sparkling Circus Troupe…! But still, they’ve attracted so much attention; what in the world are they up to?”
After the audience had admired the spectacle for a while, Lexia turned to Tito and Selene.
“Well then, the circus is about to begin!”
“Yes!”
“Yeah!”
Lexia jumped onto the stage and announced the opening with a flourish.
“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for waiting! Today, the Exciting and Sparkling Circus Troupe will add a special touch to the celebration! Please enjoy the best circus in the world!”
The crowd’s attention was drawn to the dignified voice and glamorous appearance of the performer.
Then, at Lexia’s signal, Tito and Selene performed trick after trick.
“Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh───!”
The crowd cheered continuously, and when Storm Bear appeared and performed, the applause was so loud that it seemed like the sky would split open.
“T-This is amazing! I had heard rumors about it, but it’s even better than I imagined!”
“Not to mention the content, but the members of the troupe are so cute!”
Even the upper-class nobles, who should be used to seeing top-notch performances, were wide-eyed.
Luna smiled wryly as she watched Lexia and the others receive a huge round of applause.
“My goodness, what does a princess of a country do… But it really is a wonderful show. I can see why everyone is so engrossed in it.”
As the circus drew to a close, Lexia raised her voice.
“Now it’s finally time for today’s final act! I will show you the greatest illusion of all!”
On the stage was a platform that looked like it could hold a person.
Lexia looked up at the balcony and extended her hand to Luna.
“Princess, please come this way!”
“!”
Luna was startled for a moment but then quickly put on a fearless smile.
“──Ah~”
She easily climbed over the railing.
“Kyaaaaaa!?”
“Diana-sama!?”
The crowd screamed, but Luna skillfully manipulated the string she had wrapped around the railing and landed softly as a feather.
“Huh? What was that? Magic…?”
“Th-That was amazing! How did she do that…?”
“A-ah, Diana-sama, please wait…!”
Worried about Luna, who was heading for the stage without hesitation, the Master of Ceremonies tried to run over to her.
Lexia looked at the Master of Ceremonies from the stage.
“I would like to ask the beautiful Diana-sama to help me with this great magic trick. Is that okay?”
“Uh, a, b-but…”
“Don’t worry, it’ll be fine. If anything goes wrong, I’ll call for help right away.”
Luna said this while casting a glance at the heavily guarded guards, and the Master of Ceremonies, although looking worried, stepped back.
“Now, my dear princess, please take my hand.”
Luna took Lexia’s hand and walked up to the stage.
“What is this all about?”
As she was looked at with anticipation, Lexia closed one eye and leaned in close to Luna.
“I’m here to help you, Luna!”
“You are so brazen… what are you going to do if your true identity is revealed?”
“Don’t worry, I’m wearing a mask to hide my identity! But more importantly, it seems that the younger brother, Douglas, is up to something.”
“I knew it would be like this…”
Lexia whispered sharply into Luna’s eyes.
“For now, let’s escape from here together. I’ll explain the details later.”
“But how are we going to escape with all this attention on us?”
“Don’t worry, just lie down here. I’ll make a spectacular kidnapping of Luna.”
When Lexia gave the signal, Tito spread a cloth on the platform.
“It looks like she has some kind of plan.”
Luna obediently lay down on it.
This platform was rigged to allow them to sneak out.
The plan was to make it look like the princess had disappeared by magic and then take advantage of the confusion to escape.
Selene raised her voice to the crowd.
“Now, please be quiet! Let’s see a surprising illusion!”
“Oh, what is it this time? What will they show us?”
The crowd, now completely caught up in the circus, watched with gleaming eyes full of anticipation.
Lexia waved to Luna and gently took her hand.
Luna’s cheeks flushed red as their lips almost touched.
“Lexia, what are you doing…!”
“It’s okay; there’s nothing to worry about. Leave it to me…”
Lexia whispered in Luna’s ear and glanced at Selene.
Selene exchanged glances with Tito and started the countdown with a large cloth in her hand.
“Now, for the greatest illusion of all time, three, two, one…”
Just as Selene was about to cover Luna with the cloth…
“Princess Diana!”
A cracked voice tore through the air, filled with both elation and tension.
“! Douglas…!”
Selene’s eyes widened in surprise.
It was the king’s younger brother, Douglas, who had emerged from the castle.
Douglas came running over, his face tense and his eyes darting around the startled crowd.
“Awawa, did he find out about the plan…?”
Lexia and the others braced themselves, but when Douglas reached the stage, he lowered his voice and said to Luna.
“Please come quickly, His Majesty the King has awakened…!”
“!”
“Now, quickly! We don’t have much time!”
“Ah, but…”
Douglas urged the surprised Luna and quickly disappeared into the castle.
The main character disappeared like the wind, and they were left gaping.
“…Ara…?”
“…W-what is this…?”
“…Could this be… a failed plan…?”
The audience and Lexia and the others were left in the courtyard.
