Part 2

“Hah, hah… I guess it still won’t make a single scratch…”

Luna stood in front of the stone pillar, gasping for breath.

“The speed, sharpness and power of the attack… have trained every element in the battle so far. If that’s not enough…”

“Luna, help!”

Suddenly, Lexia’s screams echoed, and she turned around in panic.

“Lexia?”

Lexia’s collapsed figure stood at the entrance to the nearby forest.

She immediately ran over and picked her up.

“What’s wrong, Lexia? Hmm? You’re covered in something sticky…”

Lexia groans weakly in Luna’s arms, her brow furrowed.

“Ugh… I went into the woods to pick some nuts, but I got caught in something sticky and couldn’t move…”

“You… I always tell you not to go off on your own.”

“Because they looked so delicious… I wanted to make a snack out of them for Luna to eat…”

“Hah… Next time you want to pick some, just tell me and we’ll pick them together. But what in the world is all that sticky stuff anyway…”

Luna stopped to brush off the sticky threads clinging to Lexia.

“Hmm? This is──”

“Gishaaaaaaah!”

Above Luna’s head, an eerie shadow suddenly jumped at her.

“Luna, look out!”

Before Lexia could scream, Luna shot a string at the black shadow.

“Spiral!”

“Gigyaaaaaaaah!”

A giant spider falls to the ground with a huge hole in its belly.

“A-amazing…!”

Luna brushed her hand away as she watched the spider turn black and disappear.

“An Assassin Spider, huh? A nasty monster that hunts its prey by entangling it in its webs. That sticky stuff is probably spider silk, too.”

“I get it! But still, for you to kill such a fast monster with just one blow, you are amazing, Luna!”

“Ugh, don’t hug me, it’s sticky…!”

The spider was gone, but Lexia suddenly noticed that a bunch of rainbow-colored threads had been left behind.

“Ara? Something fell here. It looks like threads…”

“This is… Assassin Spider Sticky Thread. It is a special material that Assassin Spiders sometimes drop. I didn’t expect to find it in a place like this…”

Luna looked at the thread with a wistful look, and then her eyes widened.

“No, wait. If I use this…”

“? What’s wrong, Luna?”

“For now, there’s a river at the back of the forest, so go take a bath. While you’re there, I want to try something.”

“It’s lonely to be alone. Come with me, Luna.”

“Yes, yes, I know.”

While Lexia bathes, Luna adjusts her favorite string and the Assassin Spider’s Sticky Thread.

And then…

“It’s done!”

The strings, covered in mucus and shimmering with rainbow colors, were finished.

Lexia, who had finished bathing, leaned forward, her eyes gleaming with curiosity.

“You used the Assassin Spider’s Sticky Thread! But what’s the difference between it and the strings you used before?”

“I’ll show you now. But first, wipe your hair properly or you’ll catch a cold.”

“Fufu, stop it Luna, you’re tickling me!”

Luna wiped Lexia’s hair and stepped in front of the stone pillar.

“Stay away, Lexia. Tito, can you knock the pillar towards us?”

She called to Tito, who was just passing by.

“Eehh! Y-yes, I can… but be careful not to get crushed!”

Tito was confused, but she braced herself against the stone pillar.

“I’m coming! Pressure Point Claws!”

BANG!

A sharp blow shattered the base of the pillar.

Then, the stone pillar tilted towards Luna.

SWOOSH!

Lexia turns pale as the stone pillar falls like a disk through the sky.

“Lu-Luna, what are you going to do? You’re going to get crushed!”

“It’s okay. With these spider threads──Shackles!”

Luna swung her arm sharply, and the rainbow-colored threads wrapped around the stone pillar.

The pillar, which had nearly collapsed, stopped.

“I-it stopped!”

“Lu-Luna, you’re amazing! You managed to stop such a big stone pillar…”

“It doesn’t end there──!”

Luna pulled sharply on the string attached to her finger.

And then,

WHOOSH! ──CREAK, CREAK!

The stone pillar was cut into blocks and collapsed at once.

“Awawa, oh, that stone pillar was cut into pieces…!”

“And in such a beautiful shape! It’s so sharp!”

Lexia’s eyes lit up when she saw the beautifully cut surface.

Luna smiled as she held the rainbow thread up to the sun.

“The Assassin Spider’s Sticky Thread is strong enough to handle the Bloody Ogre Lord. It is also viscous and elastic, so it can be used for other purposes besides cutting. However, because it was made with limited materials, its attack range is narrow, which is a drawback… If I can close the distance, I should be able to hit the slow-moving machine soldier.”

“It’s already so strong, and now it’s even evolved into an advanced weapon! We’re in the clear now!”

Luna giggled at Lexia’s innocent exuberance.

“Well, it’s all thanks to you… Thank you.”

“Eh, yeah? That’s right! I am a genius after all!”

“Th-That’s amazing, you two…!”

Lexia shyly puffed out her chest, and Tito’s eyes lit up.

With the improved string in her hand, Luna turned her attention to the royal capital, where the machine soldier was.

I’m looking forward to the next one.

***

“Fire Slash!”

Selene swings her flaming sword at the stone pillar.

However, it only caused shallow scratches on the surface.

“Hah, hah… I didn’t know that even a magic sword could only do this much damage… The fearsome weapons of the ancient empire… still cannot be reached by my sword…?”

She muttered in a hoarse voice and looked down at her palms.

Her pale, delicate hands were covered with many old scars.

In order to be able to return to her country one day, Selene had trained herself since she was a little girl, chanting and forging spells until she was hoarse.

But none of her skills would work against the ancient weapon.

For a moment, she almost felt depressed, but then she shook her head.

“No, there is no point in complaining. I have become strong to overcome my fate…! Unlike when I was a child, when all I could do was cry and scream, this time I will defeat Douglas, protect the Kingdom of Rastel──the world, and proudly reunite with my father!”

As Selene readied her sword again, a bright voice called out to her.

“Selene, would you like a snack?”

She turned to see Lexia standing there with a cup of tea and a pastry in her hand.

They sat down on the grass and drank the hot tea.

“Phew… That helps. I was a little overwhelmed.”

“I thought so, so I picked up a bunch of sweet treats in the foothills!”

“Fufu. You know everything, don’t you, Lexia-san?”

Selene laughed and popped the pastry into her mouth.

“Yum, it’s delicious! I’ve never had this pastry before. It’s crispy on the outside and melts on the inside… Is it fruit?”

“Yes, that’s right! They cook fruit with sugar. But when you cook it over high heat, it burns quickly, so they take their time to let the flavor seep in a little bit at a time.”

“Really? Wow, that takes a lot of time and effort.”

Selene looked at the sweetly simmering fruit with admiration, and suddenly, Lexia’s words came back to her.

“Take your time, little by little…”

She repeated casually, then looked down at the sword in her hand.

“I see, it bounces because I try to cut everything at once. If I use the properties of the magic sword to cut it a little bit at a time and then use the maximum amount of firepower…”

Selene took the sword and stood up.

“I’m sorry Lexia-san, I’ll eat later!”

“Could it be that you’ve thought of something? I’ll come with you!”

Selene held her sword against the stone pillar.

She took a deep breath and focused her mind.

The blade of the sword was surrounded by red flames.

“Whew… let’s go! Crimson Slash!”

With that, she slammed the fiercely burning sword into the stone pillar.

The sharpened blade made shallow scratches on the surface of the stone──Selene put more power into her hand that gripped the sword.

“Not yet, from here… If I pour magic into this damage…!”

The flames were coiled by Selene’s magic, and the landscape shimmered with a terrible heat.

The blade, which had not moved an inch, sank into the stone as if melting it.

“Oh, the stone…!”

“Ooooooooohh…!”

The crimson flame roared, and the blade sank deep into the stone.

Selene aimed at the moment the blade sank deep into the pillar.

“Now! Fierce Shattering Slash!”

A moment later, the sword that had sunk to the core of the stone pillar caused an explosion.

In addition, an explosion caused more explosions inside the stone pillar, and there was an impact.

BANG! BOOM, BOOM, BOOM!

The stone pillar collapsed and fell from the inside, emitting black smoke.

“Just as I thought, the inside is weaker than the outside…! Once an explosion occurs inside, it will collapse on itself, unable to absorb the impact…!”

“You did it! That’s great, Selene!”

Selene laughed as Lexia clapped her hands and jumped up and down.

“That’s because Lexia-san gave me a clue, thank you very much. Now we can hit Douglas.”

Selene paid the sword’s flames and put it away, then smiled wryly.

And so Lexia and the others spent the rest of their days training.
