Chapter 2584 - Demon Realm Amusement Park ⑮

Although the Kraken Cruise turned out to be a different kind of attraction than I had expected, the battle against the kraken was surprisingly exciting…… Heck, to be honest, it was a lot of fun.

There were cannons and ballistae. The cannons packed more power but had a slower rate of fire, while the ballistae were weaker but could fire more rapidly. I mainly used the cannons, and the whole thing was thrilling and exciting.

In the first phase, you attack the kraken’s tentacles as they emerged around the ship. After taking a certain amount of damage, a tentacle would recoil as if stunned, and after taking even more damage, it would retreat beneath the sea. The tentacles would appear some distance away and gradually approach the ship, so the objective was to intercept them before they got too close.

This time, we managed to drive them all back, but I suspect the game probably has a mechanic where it’s game over if the tentacles get close to the ship too many times.

The tentacles didn’t just appear from the front, they could emerge from any direction. However, the cannons and ballistae could only adjust their aim by about ninety degrees, so if a tentacle appeared somewhere outside that range, you’d have to move to a different cannon or ballista that could cover that area. It wasn’t the sort of attraction where you could just stand in one place and keep firing forever.

Fortunately, there were quite a few of us, and since we all knew each other, coordination was easy. We were able to decide who would cover which direction and fight efficiently. I imagine it would be much harder for a group of complete strangers who just happened to be riding the attraction together.

Then, after intercepting enough tentacles, the kraken itself finally appeared, and it was incredibly impressive.

Combined with its roughly 20-meter size, it really felt like some kind of sea kaiju. It had all the excitement of a climactic final battle.

When the kraken appeared, only two of its tentacles were sticking out above the water. I wonder if the number of tentacles present during the final battle changes depending on how many tentacles you successfully intercepted during the previous phase? My guess is that at least two will always appear, but if you fail to stop enough of them earlier, more tentacles are added, making the fight against the kraken much tougher.

That said, when the kraken appeared…… maybe it was just my imagination, but it seemed to be looking at us with round eyes as cute as a chihuahua’s, as though it was trying to tell us something…… but it was probably just my imagination. It was only a three-dimensional projection created through Illusion Magic after all. It wasn’t as if it had a will of its own……

In any case, once the final battle with the kraken began, the basic gameplay remained the same. We continued attacking it with cannons and ballistae, but the difference was that the kraken could attack as well.

That said, it was still just an attraction, so its attacks didn’t actually harm us or shake the ship. Instead, whenever the kraken launched an attack, any cannons or ballistae within the affected area would become temporarily unusable. To keep attacking, you either had to move to another undamaged weapon or wait for the disabled one to recover.

Every time the kraken attacked, the captain would say things like “We’re still alright!” or “The sails have taken damage!?”. Because of that, I think there was some sort of turn limit, in other words, you had to defeat the kraken before it managed to attack a certain number of times.

The attack areas didn’t seem to follow any pattern and appeared to be random. Whether you could keep attacking the kraken continuously depended partly on luck…… unn, luck played a role.

Maybe because of that…… the cannon I was using never once got disabled by the kraken. The kraken also had a tendency to dive underwater and reappear elsewhere after taking several hits, but that seemed random too. Yet somehow it kept reappearing within the firing angle of my cannon until the very end, allowing me to attack continuously from start to finish.

“Alright! We did it! We defeated the kraken!!!”

And with that, we successfully defeated the kraken and cleared the attraction. After the battle ended, the captain walked over to me and gave me a big thumbs-up.

“You dealt the most damage to the kraken. Impressive! We only managed to defeat it thanks to you, lad!”

With a bright smile, he showered me with praise…… It seemed there was some kind of MVP system based on the amount of damage dealt to the kraken, and apparently I had been chosen for it.

Well, it was only an attraction, so being selected as MVP didn’t earn me any special reward. All I got was praise from the captain…… but honestly, it still felt pretty nice.

Then, once the attraction was over, we received a reward for defeating the kraken at the exit: a kraken plush small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

It was surprisingly cute, and I could see Luna-san’s eyes sparkling when she spotted it. As someone who loved stuffed animals, she seemed especially taken with it.

And so, although the Kraken Cruise had turned out quite differently from what I had expected, it ended up being an immensely satisfying experience. Following our original plan, we then set off toward the next area.

<Afterword>

Kraken Illusion : [……(Please! Just fight me normally! I’m an enemy that’s perfectly beatable through normal means! Stop using special attacks!!!)]

Kaito : [……Those are some sad eyes.]

Kraken Illusion : [……(Ahhh, the attacks are random, you know! Where I attack is completely random! It’s entirely possible for a safe zone where no attacks land to just happen by chance! My appearance locations are random too, so it’s perfectly possible for me to keep showing up in easy-to-hit spots! The fact that that guy is almost guaranteed to be MVP is just bad luck on my part because of the randomization!!!)]

Kaito : [……Somehow, no attacks are coming my way at all, and it keeps appearing in easy-to-target positions.]

Serious-senpai : [……T- This illusion is pulling every possible punch for him.]

Makina : [Even Mother would be all smiles about this…… Ah!? This kraken…… it’s quite the suck-up.]

Serious-senpai : [Can you not!?]
