Chapter 209 – The Witch, the Demon King, and the Rabbit
After relaxing for an hour or so, we and the party of seven adventurers finally got ready, packed up, and started moving. The threat should have been eliminated, but just in case, Myrril and I will take the lead. Kane with his big sword and the men with their shields. It was probably out of consideration for the male adventurers to put the women in the middle of the group. Well, it would be different if they were muscle brains like Louis.
“Hey, what is this all about?”
“There’s nothing here…”
The second floor, which had already been cleared, was quiet and without any movement. I could see shadows fleeing in the distance, but not far enough to see them clearly. Myrril started to shoot but then stopped.
“What is that?”
“It looks like a goblin. When they saw us, they hid frantically. How scared are they?”
“Of course they are. If you kill all their companions.”
“”””Eh.””””
We went up one floor from the incline and headed for the exit.
“…Um, Takifu-san, you said you’d kill them all…”
The magician asked me shyly. This person gives the impression of being a reserved type, but it seems that she has a personality that cannot resist curiosity. When I told the story of Myrril-san’s extermination of the goblins and the giant rock bears, all the adventurers got scared.”
“That’s… about how many of them?”
When they came, I didn’t count the number because I was proceeding as if it were a work in progress. When asked, I took another quick look at my storage skill.
“There are twenty… goblins. And seven giant rock bears.”
“What?”
“There was no time to dismantle them, so I just took them as they were. Do you want them?”
“No need.”
That was an instant answer. This mage seems to have a very clear personality, not to mention her appearance.
“That’s right. None of them are edible.”
“That’s not the point, Mir-san. As an adventurer, I can’t take something that was killed by someone else, especially someone who saved my life.”
Is that so? Hearing the opinion of the magician, who probably has common sense as a social category, we realize that we are naive. After all, we come from a land without guilds or dungeons.
“No, but you know what? Let’s separate the rabbits. There are too many of them.”
“Right, we can eat them.”
Like I said, Mir-san, I don’t think that’s the point.
“Hey, there are too many… I mean, could it be that all the horned rabbits that have been springing up like an endless stream around here are gone…”
“It wasn’t me; it was Takifu.”
“And the cave wolf?”
“Yes. That was Takifu’s work, too. He killed about a hundred of both of them. He slaughtered them both with that silver thing, and he seemed to enjoy it.”
Um, Myrril-san. That makes me sound like a pleasure killer, doesn’t it? I mean, the ones I killed aren’t humans, but…
“No way, that’s not what I think.”
Armand the dwarf asked as if remembering.
“While we were fighting, we heard a roar like a giant ogre in the distance, that was…”
“Oh, that’s Mir, who killed it.”
“”””…..””””
“I only killed three of them.”
The adventurers looked at each other with tears in their eyes. They probably don’t know how to react when they hear that we killed all those who tried to kill them.
“Don’t worry about it. Myrril, you see, is… special.”
“”””Takifu-san, too!””””
“Huh?”
I was so impressed by all the women’s comments that I involuntarily straightened my back.
“Hey, Takifu…san. You don’t seem to be aware of this, so I’ll tell you, but the horned rabbit and cave wolf packs are at the limit of strength that can be defeated by a third-class party, at least in a pack of three or more.”
“What?”
After hearing Kane’s explanation, it was my turn to be surprised. The threat level was a bit higher than what I had heard from Ivan-san before. He said that even a fourth-class party could take them down, but maybe the guards are so elite that they have a higher standard from a civilian’s point of view.
“I guess they were more dangerous than I thought.”
“That’s true. Even without a mass outbreak of magical beasts like this, adventurers die in dungeons.”
“That’s true. There is a common belief that horned rabbits kill the most adventurers because of their appearance.”
As I listened to Kane and Armand’s explanation, I reminded myself not to let my guard down. It’s not cool for a demon king to be killed by a rabbit.
“Woof.”
At the exit of the dungeon, we heard Moff’s barking voice, and all the adventurers simultaneously readied their weapons.
“Oh, please lower your weapons. It’s our companion, the snow-white wolf, Moff. He must have come for us.”
“Woof.”
The adventurers let their guard down when they saw Moff, still very young for a monster, smiling and wagging his tail.
“Cute…”
“Snow white wolf. I’ve never seen it before.”
“Woof?”
Moff is happy to be petted by the ladies.
“Moff, will you take the girls back to town?”
“Woof.”
It is about two miles from the dungeon exit to the town of Sarz. It would take less than an hour to walk slowly through the snow. It seemed that no magical beasts or wild animals had ventured outside the dungeon. The return trip went smoothly, and we reached the city gate before dark.
“Well, well, well, Your Majesty the Demon King.”
“Huh?”
The one calling out to me from the top of the city walls in a surprisingly high-pitched voice was the “Witch of Sarz,” Guildmaster Ecla-san. Before we could even prepare, she jumped down and stood in front of us. Oh no, we had missed our escape.
“You’re back early.”
“I just got back. Um… The outbreak of a large number of magical beasts seems to have caused less damage… than expected.”
I was so nervous that I bit off more than I expected. I knew that she, the strongest mage, was out there defending the Sarz, but I hadn’t expected to be greeted in person.
“Well, I am glad to hear that you are safe and sound. As the leader of the Adventurers’ Guild, I am deeply grateful to you for saving the lives of our adventurers in Sarz!”
“Y-you don’t have to be so formal about it, you know… I’m just doing my duty as a resident of Sarz, you know?”
I tried to give a condescending comment back, but I guess I wasn’t old enough. I tried to flow quickly and ended up with a mess. I was just having a normal conversation with her, but my back was dripping with cold sweat.
Ecla-san let out a small snort. Her eyes turn to the adventurers, and her gaze narrows slightly. She reads their state of health and nods her head as if she had guessed something. That’s why I’m afraid. It’s as if she caught us doing the dragon meat party instead of coming back quickly. But it was an unavoidable situation.
“This is a very boring thing, but if you’d like, you can all enjoy it together.”
Being a minor citizen at heart, I decided to show a little flirtatiousness by piling up a pile of freshly caught horned rabbits in front of the station. It’s the middle of winter outdoors, so it’s almost like a refrigerator. You can roast them over a fire to keep them warm. I don’t know who’s going to dismantle it, though.
“Wow, this is a wonderful thing. Thank you so much.”
As I said, I’m afraid of any implied comment! The Witch-neesan is checking the damn hole! Maybe they’ll dismantle it, recover the warheads, and even examine the weapon’s properties! I have failed!
Sensing the delicate atmosphere, Kane, the party leader, comes over to say goodbye.
“Thank you, Takifu-san. We’ll say goodbye from here.”
“Oh, thank you for your hard work. You all did a great job. Here’s a souvenir for you.”
The adventurers tried not to take it, but I forced them to take it one by one.
“Well, well, eat it, sell it, or do whatever you want with it. Well then, get some rest today.”
“Yes, thank you very much.”
They are good, honest, and sincere people. The future of Sarz is bright. It’s just in time, so let’s get out of here.
“Well then, Ecla-san, we’ll excuse ourselves now.”
“Yes, Your Majesty, the Demon King. See you later.”
I bowed my head with a twitchy face. There is no later. No, really, please leave us alone. I’m begging you.
◇ ◇
The usual Haru-san was waiting for me at the counter of the Adventurer’s Guild.
“Welcome back, Your Majesty the Demon King.”
“Just call me Takifu, please. I’m on vacation.” [T/n: He said it in English / Katakana.]
“Takifu, you’re speaking unintelligible words again. She can’t understand you.”
“Ofu? Vakasyon?”
There you go.
“In other words… I’ll spend the winter vacation in the Republic. My work as Demon King will begin in the spring. Until I return to my homeland, I’ll be taking it easy as Takifu the merchant and adventurer.”
“Fufu, you must be joking.”
Oh, Haru-san, you attacked me so directly. What is it? Does being a subordinate of a witch infect your personality as well?
“I want you to complete the rescue request and buy back the materials.”
Myrril tapped the counter with her surge wave skill. The counter for purchasing materials is located on the opposite side of the paperwork counter, by the passage to the back of the building, far from the entrance, but it seems that no one is in charge of it at the moment.
“I just confirmed the completion of the request. The guard told me to add an extra payment.”
With a clatter, she handed me a leather bag filled with gold coins.
“Could you please take the material purchases to the dismantling warehouse in the back?”
“Oh? As expected of Ivan.”
I didn’t quite understand what she was talking about, but Haru-san smiled and nodded to Myrril.
“Yes. “They’ll never be listed on the purchase counter,” he said.”
