Chapter 210 – Meet the Meat
We were surrounded by a pile of bodies in a demolition warehouse at the back of the building. The only saving grace was that they were not human. No, there were some human corpses in my storage, though.
“That’s all.”
“Got it; let’s get on with it.”
The boss of the dismantling station is a dwarf named Tarmay-san. He wears a dismantling outfit (official name unknown), like leather armor to prevent injuries and a waterproof apron, and has a number of meat knives of different sizes hanging from his waist, making him look like a deformed samurai.
“It’s cold in here, isn’t it? You can wait over there if you like.”
“It’s okay. I’m not that weak.”
Seeing Myrrhil puffing out her thin chest, Tarmay-san nodded his head in satisfaction.
To be honest, I’m a little cold.
I heard that there is heating in the dismantling room, but the warehouse part where the stock is stored is temperature controlled with magic tools to prevent decomposition and kept at a low enough temperature to not freeze throughout the year. Maybe that is why there is not much smell.
“There are twenty-seven goblins, one hundred and thirty-four horned rabbits. Seventy-six cave wolves. Five giant rock bears. Three giant ogres… And. That’s a lot of them. Hunting them is great, but the ability to carry such a large number is just incredible.”
“That’s a trade secret, I’m afraid.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t pry. Adventurers have secrets, more or less. Well, that’s okay… What is this thing?”
Tarmay-san pointed to a large, two-headed, cave wolf-like creature.
“I don’t know. Some adventurers were attacked by it, so we defeated it, but I don’t know what it is.”
The veteran dismantler did not know its name and had never seen it before, so it might be a mutation or something. Tarmay-san also speculated on this and that, but so far, the true identity of the creature was unknown. There are two of them.
“Well, yeah. I’ll just take into account the difficulty of defeating them and their commercial value.”
The purchase price was based on the rarity of the same species, and a special allowance was added (according to Ivan-san’s instructions).
“Thank you for your efforts. If you were able to buy this much meat, the market in Sarz won’t be short of meat for a while. I look forward to working with you again.”
“Yes, thank you again.”
We returned to the guild’s office counter after receiving the bill for the materials purchased from the demolition warehouse.
“Huh? Almost two hundred and fifty pieces, just the two of you?”
“That’s right. I gave some of the rabbits away, though.”
“So it was more than two hundred and fifty. That’s amazing…”
Most of them are horned rabbits. And Chihuahua wolves.
“I’m sorry. With so many, we’ll need some time to finish the clearing.”
Hearing that, Myrril and I looked at each other and nodded.
“In that case, can we do it tomorrow? We’re in no hurry. We are tired and want to go back to the inn.”
“I understand. Then I’ll have the payment done by tomorrow.”
“Thank you.”
Myrril mounted Moff, who was waiting for us outside, and we strolled back to the “Wolf’s Tail Pavilion.” It seemed easier than I expected, but if so many monsters had come out of the dungeon, the city of Sarz would have been in danger. There are still many beasts and monsters below the third floor. By killing nearly two hundred and fifty of them, the amount of magic power filling the dungeon would have been reduced, and the danger would have been lessened. If that is not possible, we will probably have to go out again to defeat them, but that will have to wait until tomorrow.
Let’s take it easy today.
◇ ◇
“I’m back.”
“Ara, Takifu-san, Mir-chan, welcome back. You’re back early, aren’t you?”
After returning to the Wolf’s Tail Pavilion, I tilted my head at the landlady’s reaction. It was a bit early for dusk. People here don’t go outside the city walls after dark, so I think it’s a normal time to go home.
“I don’t think it’s early.”
“I got a message from the guards that you might be late. You were in the dungeon looking for a lost adventurer, weren’t you?”
Well, that’s true. I guess the guards didn’t expect it to be that easy. Maybe the lack of any sense of urgency in the expression was meant to not worry the landlady.
“Yes. I heard that the place was overrun with magical beasts, but when we went there, it wasn’t like that. We found the adventurers and returned safely.”
“I’m glad to hear that. I had heard that Takifu-san and Mir-chan were strong and that there was no danger unless some earth dragons came out. I was relieved to hear that you came back in good health after all.”
Yes. It was probably good that they told everyone that there was little danger. I took out the horned rabbit that I had not sold to the guild. It was the big, fat one on the second floor. Two of them.
“Here are some souvenirs.”
“Ara, those are nice rabbits, aren’t they? It’s big.”
“Could you cook one of them, please? You can use the rest as you wish.”
“Thank you. Leave it to me. I’m still in the middle of preparing it, so it will be ready for dinner tonight.”
The landlady hummed and carried the dishes into the kitchen. She is a very strong woman, for she easily carries a pair of horned rabbits on either side of her, each about the same size as the landlady herself.
“Not that it matters, but I wonder if you count rabbits over here, like a feather or two.”
“I don’t know. It’s two bodies or one body. Why do you treat them like birds?”
“In my country, hundreds of years ago, it was forbidden to eat meat from animals. They used the fact that they belonged to the bird family as an excuse to eat them.”
“That’s funny, but it sounds like an elaborate joke, doesn’t it?”
I think so too. After I unloaded my luggage and rested in my room, the landlady announced that it was time to eat. When I went downstairs, there were about ten guests sitting in the dining room. It was a small restaurant with five tables of various sizes and a counter, so it was quite prosperous.
“The number of customers is increasing. It’s the effect of the Demon King.”
“I don’t know if I should be happy about it.”
As a huge tray was brought in from the back of the restaurant, the customers began to murmur and groan. When it was placed on the counter, the whole picture became clear.
“Today, Takifu-san brought us some horned rabbits. Everyone, eat up!”
I wondered how she was going to cook them, but she was going to roast them whole. It’s amazing that she was able to cook such a big piece of meat in such a short time.
…When I thought about it, it seemed that each part of the meat was cooked separately and then served together. The different cooking methods, such as deep-frying, frying, and steaming, as well as the differences in batter and seasoning, are visible and subtle.
“Isn’t that dangerous?”
“No, Myrril-san, why?”
“I almost told the hostess that dinner would be light.”
“If you’re not hungry, that’s fine, isn’t it?”
“No, I’ve never had a horned rabbit as a proper dish. If it was prepared by the landlady’s skill, how could I pass up the opportunity?”
Is that so? Yes, I think I’ve eaten sandwiches or grilled skewers, but I don’t have much of an impression of them. I don’t think it’s the kind of meat that a gourmand on the verge of conquering all dragon species would be so obsessed with. After all, we will probably have to hunt them many times in the future, right?
Customers are lining up in front of the counter with excited expressions on their faces. From what I hear, the horned rabbit is at its best now, with all its fat and magic power. I know about the fat, but is it possible for magic power to be added to the meat when it’s in season? …I guess it is, since they are magical beasts.
The owner of the restaurant recommended many parts of the meat to us. She explained to us that here is the thigh, here is the belly, and here is the loin, all of which looked very tasty.
As a side dish, we were served a sweet potato that had been baked while soaking in the rabbit fat that had dripped from the grill. As we were being served, the women who were helping to serve the soup with root vegetables and bread were served at each table.
As we took our seats and began to eat, the customers around us exclaimed in admiration.
“Ooohhh!”
“This is delicious.”
“The skin is crispy, and the juices overflow when you bite into it.”
“The magic of the meat is strong. This is a good rabbit.”
It’s very tasty, but I can’t taste the magic. I wonder if it would be possible if I had the aptitude of a magician.
“Um, this is delicious. If it were in Casemaian, it would be a festive occasion for such a large number of them to be cooked.”
“That’s true, but they’re still a threat to ordinary people. I would run away if I didn’t have a weapon.”
“The taste is elegant, without any smell or peculiarity. It does not have the same assertiveness as dragon meat, but it is still a wonderful meat.”
“Yes, it is an alcohol that we are thinking of producing in the spring. As a prelude to distributing it in the southern territories, we thought we would use Sarz’s as a window. This is a prototype made elsewhere, but we want our customers to try it and see how well it goes. If you like, Landlady-san can try a bottle.”
“I appreciate that, and it’s very kind of you, but how can I pay for what you’re going to give me?”
“Tonight it’s free… No, that’s not good, is it?”
“That’s right. That would make it hard to sell the liquor.”
That is not the way a merchant does business, even if it is for research. There is a technique of offering free alcohol to attract customers, but that is something you do in your own business.
“I’ll leave it up to the landlady. I just want to know at what price you would be willing to drink again.”
“I understand. Leave it to me.”
“Okay, then.”
A lot happened today. I was happy and full and getting sleepy fast. We went upstairs to our rooms and cuddled and supported each other.
