Chapter 211 – Peace and Unknown
The next day the weather was rough before dawn. Not having experienced a real blizzard since arriving in the Republic, I looked out the window with curiosity. It was dark enough to need a light even though it was still morning, and the wooden buildings were shaking from the gusts of wind. I had a good breakfast, but I’m too lazy to go out. I was supposed to go to the Adventurers’ Guild today to settle for the materials that were bought. However, I’m sure Haru-san would understand if I didn’t go in this weather. The problem was the guards who were on their way to the border.
“I wonder if Ivan-san and the others will be okay.”
“They are locals, and they are the elite of a military organization. Surely they are prepared for stormy weather.”
“That may be true, but…”
“Well, it’s not all bad when the battlefield is stormy. When the enemy has more numbers, equipment, and experience than your army, it is an opportunity to turn the tables with a mighty blow.”
That’s right. When the weather is stormy, even in horse racing and motorsports, there can be upsets.
“I see.”
So if they collide head-on, it would have to be an upset to win? I was so preoccupied with the dungeon attack that I took it lightly. I don’t know how powerful the northern lord’s private army was, but according to Lord McKin’s story, the eastern and northern lords had most of the land troops. They were greatly reduced in numbers in the battle in the central area of Cassmeer, but the opponent was a former lord, even if he had been replaced. It was hard to believe that they would be inferior in military strength to the guards of Sarz, which was only a rural town. The number of men taken by Ivan-san was only about half of the Sarz Guards, about 20 men.
“…Mir.”
“You want to go help? No problem; I was a little disappointed yesterday when it was all over so easily.”
“Takifu-san, Mir-chan.”
Sandra-san, the landlady of the Wolf’s Tail Pavilion, called out to us from downstairs. We quickly put on our winter coats and went downstairs.
“Moff-chan is complaining about something.”
“Is he trying to get in?”
“I thought so, so I opened the door, but it doesn’t seem to be the case.”
He’s a snow wolf, so he’s probably not complaining about a blizzard or anything. He’s a magical beast, after all.
“We’ll check it out. If necessary, we may go straight into battle. Lock the inn after we leave.”
“…Is everything okay?”
“Don’t worry. There is nothing in the Republic that can defeat us.”
We open the door and step out into the snowstorm. Moff stands guard at the gate. The snow blocks my view, so I can’t see what’s going on.
“Let’s go.”
“Whenever you’re ready.”
I take Myrril in my arms and teleport with Moff to the front of the gate. On top of the closed gate, Ecla-san has set up a defensive position with the guards and adventurers in tow. Although they are not fighting, they are ready for battle.
A short teleport takes us over the city gate. Outside the city walls, on an open snowfield, a few figures could be seen here and there. The number gradually increased, and they came towards us.
“Is it an enemy attack?”
“Oh, Your Majesty, the Demon King. What do you think? It seems a bit strange.”
Ecla-san looked at the figures with her arms crossed without her staff, discouraged. The condescending attitude that warns us is gone, perhaps because of the state of emergency.
“Are you saying that Ivan-san and the others have been overrun from the area?”
I made up a worst-case scenario of being wounded or killed and made a rescue plan for the guards’ strike force in my head.
“That brat Ivan may look like that, but he’s actually skilled. He’ll never fall behind an enemy of that caliber. Instead of being overrun, he must have escaped. Those aren’t the Northern Lord’s soldiers.
I think the Northern Lord was wearing a red cloak with a yellow siren mark, wasn’t he? I don’t know if the private soldiers wore the same, but the growing number of soldiers all wore dark green cloaks.
“What is that, a green cape with a white…?”
The backs of the soldiers facing this way are not visible. I can see strange symbols on the fluttering cloak, but I can’t distinguish them with my eyesight.
“It is the snow-white wolf. It must be hard for you to accept that you’ve been made into a dishonorable symbol.
“…Woof.”
After patting Moff, who was growling in discontent, to calm him down, Ecla-san turned her attention to me. A shameful symbol, huh? With that clever, brave, proud snow-white wolf as their banner, those guys are…
“Those are the defeated remnants of the western territories, you know.”
