Chapter 228 – Lazy Raiders
I renewed my awareness that something always happens on a quiet, relaxing day off and that it is important to be careful. By the way, I got away from the fairy. I don’t know if it was really a fairy, though, since I didn’t see it up close.
I gave Moff a stern talking-to, but he didn’t seem to understand why I was angry with him, and his reaction was something like, “Uh-huh?”
“Listen, Moff, even a gentle beast like you can cause a big commotion when people who do not know you see you. If so many fairies were to enter the city, you know there would be a big commotion, don’t you?”
“Woof?”
It’s a kind of question. I could understand the intent of the question, but I wasn’t necessarily convinced. This may be the limit of the free-living beast. It is not a question of intelligence.
“Well, it’s okay for you to play with fairies, and we don’t mind, but don’t let them into the city. Is that clear?”
“Woof.”
Well, that was that. Quiet and peaceful days would return to Myrril and me for the time being.
There was a time when I thought that.
“Takifu! Come to the station!”
It’s that pattern again. What’s with the speed of events and enemy encounters? If I were playing an RPG, I would have thrown away the controller.
We had just finished our usual delicious breakfast and were about to spend a relaxing day when the captain of the guard, who had interrupted our tea break, dragged us to the east gate of Sarz.
This is what you call power abuse, isn’t it?
“You know what, Ivan-san? We finally have a quiet day off…”
“If you say so, then so do I! Just when I was about to go to my parents’ house with my family for my first long vacation in over a year, this happened!”
No, I don’t know. I can feel your sympathy, but I don’t want to pry into such private matters.
It’s true that if you look closely, it looks like he’s wearing cozy civilian clothes instead of his usual work uniform and cape. What does that mean?
“By the way, this is my wife, Irene, and my daughter, Korina.”
“”Hello, Your Majesty the Demon King.””
“Hello?”
“I already told them your name, just in case you want to know.”
Could you please call me by my name? I don’t know why you have to use my alias first.
“I used to be a merchant in the kingdom, and now I am an adventurer, Takifu. The Demon King is just a temporary form of memory.”
“No, it’s usually the other way around.”
Irene-san is a quiet, pretty woman with drooping eyes, and Korina-chan is a beautiful, healthy-looking girl who looks a lot like Ivan. They are thirty-seven and fourteen years old, by the way. No, there is no need to know his wife’s age, is there?
“It’s strange that she looks so much like Ivan, and yet she is so beautiful.”
Myrril-san says it in a casual and rude way, but in fact, Ivan’s face itself seems quite handsome just because he worked out and became a tough-looking man after being rubbed by the world. It’s not so much a wonder… or maybe it is. Korina-chan has a nice smile and looks very smart.
“I’ve heard a lot about you too, Your Majesty. Thank you for the many sweets you gave us the other day. They were very tasty.”
“Oh, you are a wonderfully well-behaved girl. I had no idea this was your daughter. They say a sunfish gives birth to a dragon!”
Hey! I don’t know what that saying is, but I can tell you it sounds rude!
“I’m flattered.”
And his wife is smiling a lot, too. Is that okay?
“By the way, a sunfish is a fish whose scales resemble those of a dragon. It is a synonym for the prodigal son because it goes down the river to the sea and never comes back”.
“No, that’s not the kind of information I need right now.”
“You guys can do whatever you want…”
Ivan-san smiled bitterly, but he seemed to be waiting for something. I hope it won’t be the “Witch of Sarz” Ecla-san. If that happens, there will be a big strike or a big expedition, and I’ll run away. I’ve decided not to work for a while. I’ve made up my mind.
“Captain.”
“Oh, how did it go?”
It’s Sembeck-san, the deputy captain, who unexpectedly comes into the guardroom. He was wearing his usual guard uniform, probably because he was not on leave.
“It’s impossible. We were completely surrounded. Even with fast horses, there’s no way we can get away with a horse-drawn sleigh.”
Surrounded by what? I thought we had already eliminated all those who would have surrounded Sarz.
“There is no urgency for the guards. We’ve closed the gates, and they don’t have the strength to scale the walls. There are no residents outside and no merchants planning to visit the city. Our supplies will last us for several months.”
“The only problem is my travel and holiday plans.”
“What the hell is that… Hmm?”
I hear something strange. It’s like a large group of children making strange noises in excitement. It doesn’t sound too threatening, but it’s coming from all directions, and the number of voices is unusual.
Myrril frowns in displeasure as she hears the voices.
“…That voice, it’s a goblin.”
Is that it? The little monsters we saw in the dungeons and forests of Yerkel. They were scary, but they didn’t seem strong. I don’t think it’s anything the guards can’t handle. Sembeck-san shrugged as he met my gaze.
“It’s true that the goblins are weak. They are small fry. If it were a group of ten or twenty, we could easily defeat them. But there are at least 2,000 of them out there.”
“…Huh? Two thousand!?”
Where did such a number come from? No, maybe it’s…?
“They’re too well equipped. They’re probably dungeon dwellers. Their internal ecosystem must have collapsed.”
“…H-huh?”
Ivan-san grabbed our shoulders as we looked away.
“Of course, we are grateful to you for saving the group of adventurers. And for wiping out the monsters and wild beasts of the shallow floors. But you went too far.”
Sembeck-san chuckles.
“There were several large rock bears and giant ogres, plus more than two hundred horned rabbits and cave pack wolves. If you kill the leader of the cave wolf pack, it will not respawn for more than a year until you reach the second floor. When that happens, the monsters and beasts from the deeper floors that used to prey there will come out of the dungeon in search of food.”
No, I don’t know. Maybe it’s common knowledge among adventurers.
“I don’t blame you. I’ll submit this matter as a request. I’ll add to the reward. So please, help us destroy the goblins!”
If the captain of the guard, whom I’ve known the longest among the people of Sarz, bows to me, I can’t refuse, besides, in front of his beautiful wife and child―and after being told that I was partly to blame. I can’t help but feel that this is a bit unfair.
“Where is Ecla-san?”
“She’s on her way to Lafan for a regular briefing. She’ll be back in two weeks.”
Our vacation will be completely over by then. Well, if she had been here, she would have killed two or three thousand goblins while humming a song. Maybe she would have created a clearing or a crater or something around Sarz.
“By the way, just to be clear, you don’t eat goblin meat, do you?”
“I wouldn’t eat the filthy thing.”
“Well, okay. I’ll take it. I just got some good stuff.”
If I shred them with bullets, the price of the raw material will be lower, and when they are cooked, the warheads left in their bodies will chip your teeth. With the new ammunition, I’m pretty sure I can do it without leaving any residue.
“What do you mean by good stuff, Takifu?”
“That’s right. Why don’t you try PPSh-41 instead of UZI?”
