Chapter 260 – Meeting With the Enemy

I launched the Casspir, which I had placed in the rear, the highest position of the oasis, and headed down the sloping sand hill toward the enemy hordes.

“It’s going to be shaky for a while. Don’t load ammo until I give the signal to start firing!”

“”””Yes!””””

I make a wide circle around the oasis and take a single turn to the west. The giant Kaienholt is coming from the west, so I want to avoid it and go to the southeast side.

The original plan has changed, and there are still nearly 10,000 bodies piled up in a dry river dug out on the south side of the oasis. If we drive the Casspir over it, it will be crushed by the weight of the car, so we will have to make a big detour. Also, the dry river runs from east to west, but it is not symmetrical to the oasis, and the east side is almost twice as far away.

Who the hell put me through all this trouble? I did both myself.

After crossing the dry river at the west end, I turned southeast. I crossed in front of the giant Kaienholt, which was heading north towards the oasis at an angle. Whether we can outrun it or get caught depends on our speed, but in any case, we will be chasing each other.

From there, we will use Casspir’s speed and firepower to overrun the enemy line and head southeast in search of the mage.

If we cannot find her, we will have no choice but to narrow the search area by drawing concentric circles from the outer perimeter. The difference in speed makes it unlikely that we will be pursued by soldiers, but if we leave them alive, they may escape to the north, where the refugees live.

If at all possible, we must wipe them out here.

“We’re not going to the giant Kaienholt?”

“It’s just a decoration for the war effort.”

Besides, sand is not a good place to shoot with firearms.

“The Prince said that a while ago. There are some mages who control it. As long as we can kill them, the big thing is finished.”

“”But what if it attacks us?””

“It won’t be a problem. Even if it is a monster, it is still a man-made monster. As long as we are dealing with humans, there is no way we will fall behind.”

The woman laughed happily.

“Isn’t that right, Yoshua?”

How could I deny it when she looked at me like that?

“T-That’s right.”

I stuttered. I thought my voice sounded like crap. I still can’t get used to going through one crisis after another. But this was really something. Maybe it’s the fate of couples who are tied together in a dangerous situation. They have to be bound so tightly that they cannot escape. Me, Myrril, and trouble.

I meet Myrril’s doubtful look and make up my mind. That’s right. I’ve decided to stay with her for the rest of my life. The half of me that is inseparable.

“No wonder! As long as you and I are together, anything against us is just a fart!”

I said in an Edo dialect. I’ve only lived in Tokyo for about three years. And outside the 23 wards… Well, that’s okay.”

“Prince, do you have any idea where the magician is? Just a rough guess.”

“The answer came from behind enemy lines. I don’t know their exact location yet.”

“Will you be able to tell when we get closer?”

“””””””Can tell.”””””””

Myrril and I nodded to each other at the shrine maiden’s words.

“Everyone, get ready to fire!”

“”””Yes!””””

“Don’t let the newcomers who have never touched a gun shoot; it’s dangerous. Only exchange heated guns and hand over magazines.”

“”””Yes!””””

“Don’t forget to wear leather gloves when you touch the gun.”

“”””Yes!””””

Myrril-san, you’re like a concerned mother. But even I don’t want my children to have guns when I have enough hands. Besides, the Prince and the twins are children, too. But when you’re up against 10,000 enemies, and the only shooter is Myrril, there’s a dead end somewhere.

“The Prince, the Fel, and Eyal, too. Before you start shooting, take care of the shrine maidens.”

“”I understand.””

“Don’t worry about us.”

At the end of the rear compartment are spare PPSh and ammo magazines. To distinguish them from the spent ones, empty magazines and heated rifles were placed in a wooden box in the middle.

There were more than 4,000 rounds of pistol ammunition in the PPSh and more than 3,000 rounds of rifle ammunition in the PKM, including additional rifle ammunition. If things don’t settle down after that many rounds, then…

If that’s the case, that’s the case. I will go all the way. No matter what it takes.

“Well, let’s do it.”

Under the gun, Myrril spread out the large bundle I had given her. The long and thick ones were stretched out and tight, even up to the passenger seat.

“Watch it, you lowlifes. If you think you can survive against the real demon king and queen, you’re wrong.”

“U-um, Myrril-san. The KPV is a very reliable weapon, but I don’t think it’s possible to shoot the KPV hand-held from the turret.”

I don’t think the tripod will come out of the opening even if you take it off.

“Don’t worry about it. I’ll do what I can. You just concentrate on driving!”

“Ah, yeah.”

It was about 300 meters to the front of the enemy line. Surprisingly, the lead was light infantry, though they might have been left behind in the repositioning that followed the KPV fire.

“Yoshua, archers on both flanks of the center line are firing at us.”

“Ignore them. The window will stop them if it’s a bow or projectile weapon. If it’s a vehicle body, even if it’s a projectile weapon, it should be able to repel them!”

…It should. But I haven’t tried it.

As I said that, a huge number of arrows rained down on us, filling the sky above us. There are screams in the rear compartment, but I press the gas pedal down without paying attention.

“All right, ready to fire!”

“”””””Yes.””””””

The shrine maidens, two on each side, plus one of the escort twins, pushed their barrels out of their sight. Seeing that all the arrowheads had bounced off, they seemed to have calmed down and waited silently for the signal.

“All right, the whole area around us is enemy territory! All hands, start firing!”

“”””””Yes!””””””

A tremendous roar rang out as countless shell casings bounced around the rear compartment. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the enemy soldiers being wiped out, blood and flesh splattering everywhere.

“Good, keep it up!”

Myrril steps up to the gun emplacement, carrying the RPG launcher and warhead case. Immediately, a group of heavy infantry, apparently trying to form a tight formation in the distance, is blown apart, and the leader of the advancing light cavalry unit is knocked off his feet and tumbles to the ground, engulfing the rest of the column. That last one was a UZI eyeshot. They were shaken and crushed by the horse’s body, and none of them got up until they were cut off from sight. There was nothing to do but cower in panic, with no way to escape and no way to fight like a group of light infantry. By the time Casspir passed them, however, they were destined to be torn to shreds by bullets fired from the rear loopholes.

And just when I thought I saw a group of heavily armed infantry in front of me… they were blown to bits by an RPG and rolled away. A heavy cavalry unit that appeared to be an Imperial Guard reserve, probably waiting its turn in the center ranks, disappeared almost as soon as I saw it.

The huge body of the Casspir plowed straight through the enemy line, flicking and crushing the light cavalry that clung to its body as it ran at an angle.

“I’m going to spread some ‘ai-i-dee’ around. It’s going to be a little bumpy!”

“””””Yes!”””””

Myrril comes down from the gun emplacement and heads back up with a large package. Looking in the rearview mirror, he sees that the group of pursuing light cavalrymen had begun to gather behind Casspir like a giant stream of water, only to be dissipated into a reddish-black fountain by an IED thrown into the air.

The shrine maidens who responded probably had no idea what “ai-i-dee” was, but they probably had a vague image of it from the “shaking” part. They did not seem to move.

“Prince! The shrine maiden, too; as soon as you have an idea where the magician is, let me know!”

“”””Yes!””””

“Your Majesty, the Demon King, to the left!”

Immediately after I turned the wheel in response to the Prince’s words, something that looked like a brown stone began to fall on the path we had been walking.

“Wow!?”

When it lifted again, we knew it was the fist of the giant Kaienholt. How much damage a direct hit would have done to Casspir is unknown, but the impact and roar made it unlikely that I would try.

The sound of PKM gunfire echoed, but from the sound of Myrril’s frustrated cursing, it was likely that small arms bullets would have no effect on the huge body created by the evil method.

“Your opponent is a big butt for later!”

The PKM attacked the soldiers after regaining her composure. Although ineffective against the mass of sand, the firepower was rather excessive against the soldiers’ bare flesh. With each successive shot, a group of soldiers was easily shot through and fell in a heap to the rear.

“Somebody take care of this!”

An empty ammunition box falls from the gun emplacement into the rear compartment, and one of the shrine maidens picks it up and carries it to the “used” wooden box. The ammunition belt is replaced, and the gun starts firing again.

“Your Majesty the Demon King, there’s a reaction from the mage in front and to the right!”

“Yoshua! Go to the far right where the red flags are gathered!”

“Copy that!”

I don’t know what she found, but I just reacted and followed. Myrril’s eyesight, intuition, and insight are much sharper than mine. If she misses, I don’t care. We were in the middle of the enemy force, and we had no choice but to overrun them anyway.

As I charged forward at full speed, I found the flags gathered in a modest earth-colored tent. It was similar to the white tent of the supply unit I found when we went to rescue the shrine maidens, but it was surrounded by stakes and a rope that looked like an ethnic shimenawa. A carpet on the ground, like a magic circle, was glowing with light. In the center of the pile, about 40 men in priestly robes could be seen sitting in a circle. [T/n: Shimenawa (lit. ‘enclosing rope’) are lengths of laid rice straw or hemp[1]rope used for ritual purification in the Shinto religion.

Were these the magicians?

Strangely enough, even though I was looking at them, their presence was shaky and blurry, and I could not make out any details.

“Your Majesty the Queen, it’s a concealment spell!”

“I know! They are so insolent. They think they can fool even the dwarves’ eyesight with such tricks…”

The nightmarish scene appeared in the rearview mirror.

“Dangerous…”

The giant Kaienholt’s foot kicked toward Casspir as if it were kicking a soccer ball.

Myrril, who thought she was about to retaliate, howled with laughter.

“Yoshua, slow down! Turn right!”

I turned the wheel as hard as I could. The kicked-out leg of the giant Kaienholt grabs the back of the Casspir. I could see the men in the priest’s robes looking back at me, their eyes wide open, and now we could see them clearly.

“Good, use all the bullets!”

Hundreds of bullets were fired, including the loopholes and gun emplacements, turning the men in the tent into minced meat in an instant.
