Chapter 261 – The Currency of Grace
“Oh!”
Myrril, sitting on the gun emplacement above us, raised a strange voice as we looked out the window at the magicians who had turned into lumps of flesh. A pitch-black shadow covered the body of the car. The huge Kaienholt that had fallen on the car must have turned back into sand and poured down on the car. Myrril, who had been hit directly by the shadow, came down coughing.
“Cough, ugh!”
“Myrril, are you all right?”
“Yes. I feel bad, but the sand won’t kill me. More importantly, over there.”
She pointed in the direction of the Imperial Army, still advancing north. There are no more enemies in the oasis or beyond, but they are still advancing blindly as if the chain of command is not in order.
“Should we chase them down and shoot them from behind?”
Well, maybe it was the only way, but I didn’t understand what it meant. It must be all of them, and the shrine maidens looked at each other suspiciously.
“I don’t care about the soldiers outside, but I’m sure they can see Casspir here. Don’t they realize that we are the target?”
“”The orders they received are to move forward. If nothing changes, move forward.””
The twin escorts tell us in a cold voice. They don’t seem particularly upset. I guess they know that the soldiers of the Imperial Army are like that.
That in itself is not important, but it would be bad if they continued like this. I have heard that there is a settlement north of the oasis where refugees from Solbesia are hiding, and if the damage is done there, it could lead to an extended invasion.
“Yoshua, we have to stop them.”
I started the car but felt this was not a good solution.
“To the right, a little closer!”
“”We’ll take the lead, destroy the rest!””
“””””Yes!”””””
I’ll use Casspir like a sheepdog to herd the remnants of the defeated soldiers and lead them in the direction I want them to go. If we kill them when they’re all in one place, I’ll be more like a big fish attacking a school of small fish than a sheepdog.
“Yoshua, cavalry to the northwest! Stop that side first!”
Although the PKM’s shooting has reduced their numbers, there are too many of them, and a group of them are starting to get out of range.
If we take too long, we might miss some, and if we gather too many, the remaining troops will swell and spill out in unexpected directions. No matter how much we shoot, there is no end in sight. The wooden box is full after replacing the heated gun. I get more PPSh out of storage, but now the loaded magazines are starting to run out. The ammunition itself is available, but I can’t take the time to repack it. Even if I asked the new shrine maidens who were available, it would be difficult with the bumpy ride.
“Mir, we may not be able to get them all.”
“If we’re going to kill them anyway, we don’t need to collect them. If we deprive them of their supplies, no one will be able to return home. Then we can ambush them on the north side of the village.”
Just as I was beginning to think that this was not a bad next step, the lord called out to me.
“Your Majesty the Demon King, can you drop me off just down the road?”
“What are you going to do when you get out?”
“I will use the currency of grace you gave me on the south side of the oasis.”
It’s okay to use it, but the distance is still almost a kilometer away. I don’t know what we can do if we drop the lord off at a place like this. I saw the twin guards, but they didn’t seem to be able to stop the Prince.
“Your Majesty the Queen, could you please defeat the group of light infantry that can be seen in the northeast? I believe it will help us connect.”
“…Connect?”
“I see! No, I don’t know, but I understand that I’m going to defeat them!”
The sound of PKM firing rang out, and a snort of accomplishment could be heard from the gun emplacement, though the result was not visible.
“Your Majesty the Demon King, please continue to the east.”
“I thought we were heading for an oasis.”
“We will not make it in time. The lead is already approaching the pile of corpses. Stop at the burned-out ruins of the gun emplacement just beyond.”
I did as I was told and brought the Casspir to a stop at the eastern edge of the enemy position, in front of a gun emplacement that appeared to be the wreckage of a distant mine gun.
Prince Haidar stepped out of the rear hatch and asked me to move the car with the shrine maidens on board a little further east.
“”Prince, we are not leaving your side!””
“I know, just for a little while. When I’m done, I won’t be able to move for a while. You’re the only one who can help me.”
“Y-yes.”
“I am grateful to His Majesty the Witch King, His Majesty the Queen, and all of you. Because of everyone’s presence and support, I am… able to be who I am.”
I have a bad feeling about the willful words, but the Prince’s back, full of determination, does not allow me to approach him. I take a precautionary approach.
“My power, for Solbesia.”
A flash of blue-green light comes from Prince Haidar’s body as he utters what seems to be an incantation. It is similar to the magic light emitted by a mage but has a lighter edge and a warmer color.
“What, is that the currency of grace as well?”
“I don’t know, but it seems to be some kind of powerful magic. I don’t feel any signs of danger, though…”
Suddenly, the Prince’s back shook. It changed from blue-green to almost transparent green and finally turned completely white.
“What… is that, that magic power? The amount of unusual magic power and the amount of unusual magic pressure… is just like an earth dragon.”
The twin guards stared at the lord and nodded as if to say, “Of course.”
“”This is the true power of the Prince.””
The shrine maidens in the back seat all clasp their hands in prayer. The twin attendants do not join in but look at the Prince’s back as it sways in the light. They are ready to jump out of the way if anything happens to the Prince.
“”The Prince has always regretted it.””
The twins’ voices are filled with sadness and regret.
“”For not fighting. For not resisting. For not being able to protect her. For not getting it back.””
The Prince’s swelling magic power is so high that even I, who have no ability to sense it, can clearly feel it.
“”He always, always regretted it.”
The power was too great. I felt overwhelmed as if I were facing a raging, violent sea. And yet, it was not frightening. It was warm, gentle, and somehow a little sad.
“”He swore to the queen that he would not use his royal power to kill.””
“Now I break my vow. Mother, I ask no forgiveness.”
The Prince put his hands on the ground and shouted.
“It is my will!”
A dull thud echoed through the air.
It was the turret of a distant thunder cannon being fired high into the sky. The cannon, which should have had a mass the size of a small car, was instantly scooped up by a large tree that appeared and swirled through the air.
It had been shown before that corpses were turned into particles and converted into “currency of grace” to grow trees and flowers, but this time, the speed and density were so intense that my eyes could not keep up.
“”””Oooohhhh…””””
The cries of the people, whether it was me, Myrril, the guard twins, the shrine maidens, or all of them, were drowned out by a chorus of admiration, fear, awe, and wonder as the green blast headed north in a straight line.
That’s right. Heavy machine-gun fire from the oasis in all directions to the south, so the bodies lie in a radial pattern. In theory. Of course, there are some disconnected parts, and the distribution of the bodies must be scattered in different ways.
Of course, but…
“No way, hey…”
The bodies burst into a chain of particles, glowing green, and then transformed into trees and flowers, filling the ground. An area that should have been nothing more than a wilderness of dust is being eroded by plants… or rather, blessings.
It is like a green fuse. The dead bodies are turning into particles and appearing as grass and flowers. I know in my mind that it is a chain of events, but the information that enters my visual sense is so different.
It is not just bodies that fill the ground. There are also living soldiers, horses, wagons, and piles of supplies. A green wave rushes through the ground, bouncing and crushing everything with tremendous force. The wave pauses for a moment, perhaps where the bodies have piled up, and then explodes into a huge tree that stretches into the air. People, things, and horses are torn apart in mid-air, then turned into green particles and poured into the ground.
The soldiers marching north are caught by the approaching green wave. It swallows them as they try to turn and flee, devouring them, tearing them apart, turning them into particles, and eroding them. The group of soldiers staggers as they try to escape. They fall, their feet caught in the moss or the leaves or the roots of the grass, and they never get up again.
“Yoshua, look!”
I finally understood the sound of Myrril’s voice. I finally understood what the Prince meant when he said to connect it.
The green line of fire reached the corpse of a group of light infantry that Myrril had defeated and then slowly and gradually disappeared over the dry riverbed, slowing down slightly.
“Over there, I… a pile of corpses.”
“Everyone get down in the shadow of the Casspir!”
The ground shook violently. A huge explosion, as if a mountain of explosives had been detonated at once. Slightly delayed, a roar reached my ears. Numerous fragments of various kinds of debris, which could have been rocks, weapons, or armor lying around, flew out and hit the Casspir’s body. A boulder the size of a refrigerator that flew past the crux tore off the roof and stuck in the ground.
“”Prince!””
The twins rush over to the fallen Prince Haidar, covering him to protect him from the flying debris.
“Yoshua!”
I teleported a short distance, grabbed the three of them, and then teleported back into the shadow of Casspir.
Everyone, get in!”
“””””Y-yes!”””””
I throw them into the back compartment and run to the driver’s seat. Even though the Prince is down, the green erosion does not stop. In fact, it seems to be spinning out of control as the one who created it loses consciousness.
“Yoshua!”
“I know!”
Myrril pointed ahead as I pulled away from the grass that was trying to entangle the tires and stepped on the accelerator. The rear wheels buried themselves in the soft ground and spun around, but they soon regained their footing and managed to escape.
“What kind of power is that? It’s a mess! We were about to be turned into flowers!”
Mirryl turned around, laughing out loud.
The Prince, who seems to have regained consciousness thanks to the care of the twins, looks out of the window and sees the scene with a complicated expression on his face.
“Look, Prince!”
“I’m sorry…”
“You did it!”
“Huh?”
“Your dead retainer must be very pleased with you! You were a great royalty worth risking your life to protect!”
“…..‼︎”
“…Prince””
A sobbing voice came from the rear compartment.
“Turn east and head north.”
“Roger that.”
Although we said we were going around, the dry river had turned into a dense forest, and we could not see beyond it. Tall trees and thick undergrowth completely blocked our view. I don’t know what’s going on anymore.
It seems that the too-powerful ‘currency of blessing’ has spread to the oasis, and as far as we can see from the northeast, there is nothing that looks like an oasis.
“Perhaps this area is an oasis in terms of location.”
It is covered by a huge dense forest, and you can’t see anything.
“Well, that’s okay. We don’t have to go there anymore.”
“We’ll just keep going north, everyone.”
“”””Yes.””””
“Ah, Yoshua. We might want to hurry.”
I followed Myrril’s gaze and gasped as I looked in the rearview mirror. A group of fleeing Imperial Army soldiers stumbled out of the forest.
With a poof, small trees sprang up where they had been, and they were never seen again.
They struggled slightly and stopped moving, pushed over by a swirl of grasses and trees that grew up behind them.
With a puff, small trees sprang up where they had been, and that was that.
“Hey, Prince! This hasn’t stopped yet!”
“Sorry… after activating it, it will stay after it leaves my will.”
Is that so? The pirate fortress forest was also preserved.
“No, don’t worry about it. When the corpses are gone, the greening will stop.”
On the contrary, as long as the supply of corpses continues, the erosion and growth… or expansion, will continue.
Thick forests will be born, spreading out and swallowing up the desert. It becomes a deep, dense forest that no one can leave, a swamp filled with water, nourishing living creatures, containing life and death, and giving birth to more “currency of blessings.” The jungle expands and expands, and a vast jungle area emerges in a corner of the desert.
Maybe one day, the desert itself will disappear.
No matter how much I run, the shadow of a huge tree that doesn’t disappear from my rearview mirror makes me feel a little scared.
“Miracle… It is too strong a word.”
“Yes, that’s right.”
That’s all I could say as an ignorant and uneducated citizen.
