Chapter 267 – Captive Elf
I position myself as I fall off the cliff and teleport to the back of the wagon that was coming down the hill. I see a woman desperately crouching down to protect her child and a boy lying in front of her.
“No crying child!”
“”Waaaaaaaah!””
The sailors look back in surprise at Myrril and me, who suddenly appear behind them. What were those guys doing on the back of a moving wagon? I had heard there were four of them, but even counting the baby, there was still one person missing.
“What the hell, you people? Where did you come from?”
The sound of two babies crying could be heard around the woman’s chest. They appear to be safe and sound. The woman and the boy are unidentified.
“You made my fellow compatriots cry.”
“Huh?”
As soon as she stepped out of my arms, the dwarf girl, who had turned into some kind of devil, threw the four sailors down the hill in a single bound. The destination of the arc-shaped fall is the ground several tens of meters below. The screams continued for a long time, then quickly died down.
Seeing this, a sailor sitting on the coachman’s seat tries to escape but is immediately caught and thrown to the ground.
“Eeii, stop!”
The horse was on the verge of rearing up at Myrril’s murderous intent, but it remained perfectly still. I had heard that horses were intelligent, shy, and sensitive creatures and that when they panicked, they went berserk.
“If you move, you’re next.”
The horse remained motionless, standing straight and still. Meanwhile, I checked the condition of the woman and the boy. As I approached, the woman crouched down even more to protect the child.
“We’re here to help you.”
The woman looks up in alarm as Myril speaks to her in a soft voice.
“…U-umi.”
“Sea?” [T/n: Umi means sea in Japanese.]
“Umir, my little brother.”
She turned her head to look at the boy she held in her arms.
“By the looks of him, his breathing and pulse are stable. I think he’s just knocked out, but we’ll get him to a healing mage soon.”
The woman’s face turned puzzled as I told her.
“A mage?”
“Yes. Could you close your eyes for a moment, please?”
“The baby comes first.”
Myril told me that she would stay with the boy.
“I’ll be right back.”
I take the woman and the baby in my arms, reassure her that they are safe, and jump over the cliff. I hand the woman and the baby to the shrine maidens, who immediately cast a healing spell on the woman and the baby.
I jumped back down the cliff, took Myrril and the awakened Umir in my arms, and immediately returned to the woman, who came towards us with the two babies in her arms.
“Umir!”
“…Nee-san, what about Mia and Mea?”
“They are safe. Thanks to you.”
Myrril, who understood what was going on, patted Umir’s head.
“You protected your sister and your niece and your nephew, didn’t you? You’re the man!”
“Who are you?”
That’s right. If a girl your own size suddenly treated you like a child, you would be offended.
“We’re just the Demon King and his wife, just passing through.”
“Demon King?”
“There are thirty-two left. Can any of you shrine maidens tell me where to go next?”
“””” There.””””
“Is it that thing, like a supply depot? The one with the blue flag where the horses are tied up now?”
“”””Yes. Two girls.””””
“Yoshua, can you see it?”
“Well, just the loaded baggage and the wagons. Where are the girls?”
“I can’t see them from here. They could be in some kind of tent off to the side.”
“We’ll teleport to the back. Be ready for battle.”
“Understood.”
The distance suddenly increased to nearly 700 meters. The supply depot was at the bottom of the hill. There were a few horses and five or six people, either sailors or transport soldiers.
I jumped behind a simple tent and set up my MAC10. I tried to get things done quietly, but when I turned around, Myrril walked right into the tent.
“Hey, what are you doing?”
“You’re in my way, you bastards! Where are the elf girls?”
I was puzzled by her sudden warlike attitude. After shooting and killing three sailors outside the tent who pulled out their curved knives in alarm at the sound of her voice, I shot and killed two uniformed soldiers who came running out from behind the supplies and then ran into the tent.
“H-huh?”
“It’s done. Let’s go back, Yoshua.”
Two sailors and a uniformed soldier were lying on the ground in a prostrate position. I tried to put them in storage, but they disappeared without a hitch.
“They tried to intimidate me by holding them hostage. I just gave them a big slap.”
Yes. That’s how she broke their necks. It’s a common story among the hard-armed, muscle-brained girls.
Two elven women came out of the tent, one with a bruised face and the other with the chest of a pierced headdress ripped off.
“I heard you were going to be treated very badly. I promise you won’t have to go through that again.”
“…You are…”
“How can I put it? We’re like soldiers in the service of Prince Haidar. We’re taking you to him now.”
“Why do you say something different every time someone asks about us?”
“That’s it. Is there a quick way to say it?”
No, probably not. Our position itself is rather vague. Well, okay. I put all the bodies of the dead soldiers and the supplies in my camp, and then I took the two women in my arms.
“Just bear with me for a moment. Soon… Whoa!?”
“What’s going on?”
Following my gaze, Myrrlil and the two women looked up at the top of the cliff, both speechless.
There, a dense jungle spread out around a huge sacred tree.
“”…Currency of grace.””
“Yes, that’s right. Prince Haidar has made a mess. I’m going to send you over there, and I want you to wait there for a while.”
“Wait? Wait for what?”
“Bring your people back. There are only… 30 people left.”
Myrril jumped on my back and tapped me on the chest to signal that we were ready to go.
I jumped to the top of the cliff and handed the two women to the shrine maidens.
And the next target is.
“”””Seven, in a row, in a tent.””””
“The next target is a bit far away. Can you see it, Yoshua?”
“It’s more than a kilometer away. I’m only vaguely aware of it.”
“”””The second from the right. Three men.””””
“Myrril, can you stay here?”
“Remington, it would be good if you could bring it out.”
I pulled out the Remington M700 and handed it to Myrril, along with all the ammo. Nojaloli-san fired a few rounds quickly and turned around.
“This will be fine. If there is a battle, I will support you.”
The place I jumped to was already in an uproar. A uniformed soldier who looked like an officer had been shot in the stomach was lying on the ground, and around his corpse were soldiers standing guard with swords and bows.
There’s nothing they can do to help. She’s already got them in her sights.
I took advantage of the commotion to enter the second tent that had been pointed out to me. Two men, both elves, chained and beaten, were being attended to by a boy in a headdress who appeared to be an elf. I caught the fist of the boy who saw me and immediately tried to hit me.
“You!”
“Quiet. I’ve come to rescue you at Prince Haidar’s request. Can you move?”
“…Prince Haidar is dead. You tried to trick us.”
I untie the two men and throw them out.
“See that cliff over there?”
I cut through the tent with a knife and pointed to a cliff to the southwest. The boy peered into the hole I had cut with alarm and looked back at me when he saw the forest stretching out there.
“The grace… what is it?”
“Yes, it’s the currency of grace. I’ve heard it’s a power only royalty can have. If you come with me, I’ll take you there immediately.”
If he refuses, I’ll beat him up and take them away.
“Y-yes.”
I walked out of the tent with the two worn-out men on either side of me.
“I need you to get on my back. Put your hands around me and make sure you don’t fall off.”
“Huh?”
“Just do it!”
“Hey, you!”
If we yelled and staggered, we’d be discovered. With the boy on my back, I saw a group of sailors running toward us. They were lined up side by side, daggers and spears at the ready, and a bullet went through their chests.
“””!!!”””
The sniper girl took out four men with a single shot.
“Let’s go, hold on tight!”
“Yes!”
After moving into the air, I moved to the top of the cliff again. Myrril smiled as she lowered her rifle.
“Thank goodness.”
“What? It’s not that bad.”
The boy’s eyes are still black and white, but I’ll leave the explanation to someone else. After I stowed the Remington I had received, Myrril jumped onto my back.
“Now, there are twenty-seven of them left. Is there a problem with your magic?”
“We can still go.”
“You see that big watchtower thing on the side? That’s where the two roads cross.”
“Ah, uh… yeah.”
That’s about two kilometers, right? It’s almost just a brown rectangle to my eyes.
“Is that where they keep the captives?”
“Not exactly.”
Myrril’s voice was deep and stagnant with anger.
“The chiefs of the tribes from the villages of Solbesia are hanged to make an example of them. This is to discourage rebellion among the people of this land.”
