Chapter 268 – March of the Giant Beast
“These tribal chiefs, how many are they?”
“Five. Before that, there were 12 people from the village who were taken out.”
“That’s impossible.”
I can’t carry that many. I only have two hands, and even if Myrril-san were to become an extension, I couldn’t hold seventeen people. Two or three of them are bound to fall off somewhere.
I gave the shrine maidens the same composite bow with a pulley that I gave to the twins. I also left water, food, and blankets with them, just in case.
“I’m going out for a while. Can one of you show me the way?”
“I’ll go.”
One of the shrine maidens immediately stepped forward. Her name is, um… right?
“You are Milian, right?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
She was the child who had been found lying on the ground, pinned down by the corpse of a soldier, in the ruins of a gun emplacement on the walls of Solbesia. She seems to be the oldest and calmest of the shrine maidens.
“This is how it’s going to be. Keep up the good work, and by the time the blood stains on their white robes disappear, you’ll have memorized everyone’s face.”
It’s obvious, isn’t it? If they wore the same clothes, it would be hard to tell them apart. The faces of the elves of both genders are similarly beautiful, so it’s hard to tell them apart when people of the same age get together.
“Milian, can you use healing magic?”
“Yes, I can. If anyone is injured, I will heal them.”
“Thank you. Then hold hands with Myrril.”
I took the two of them and headed for the cliff. Milian will have a bag of PPSh and a magazine. I guess she knows she could get into trouble, but she doesn’t seem to mind. She seems to be a reliable girl, after all.
“Okay, Milian. Do you know where all the men are except for the seventeen with the tribal chief hanging?”
“Right, inside, white, tent.”
“I don’t see them. How about you, Myrril?”
“Isn’t that where the tents are gathered?”
“Yes. The children are gathered there.”
The anger might have shown on my face, and Milian backed away as if frightened.
“S-sorry. I’m not angry with you. Believe me, I will save you all, I promise.”
“Y-yes. I’m fine.”
Half-amused, Myrril hugged Milian and reassured her.
“Forgive me, Milian. For some reason, His Majesty the Demon King loses his cool when he sees an unfortunate child.”
I don’t deny that, but I think it’s the same for you, Myrril-san.
“As far as I can see, you didn’t have a hard childhood, did you?”
Well, yes. My grandmother in Koriyama took good care of me, and my parents were good parents.
“I was happy as a child. That’s why, I guess.”
“Hmm?”
“I think children should be happy, at least in their childhood. No, I think they should be, so when I see unhappy children, I can’t forgive it.”
So I understood. The reason why I became like that. I wasn’t aware of it at all. I had unconsciously accepted the fact that I had grown up and become a corporate employee.
Wow, that’s a little depressing.
“What is that strange look on your face? Come on, Yoshua, we’re running out of time.”
“Oh yeah.”
With Myrril and Milian in both hands, I jumped up to a lookout in the middle of the enemy lines. There, I let Casspir out and got the two girls into the car through the rear hatch while I climbed into the driver’s seat. Myrril was already at the gun emplacement, ready for battle.
“Myrril, where’s the enemy?”
“No sign of the enemy. They don’t seem to have noticed us. We should be fine for a while.”
I chose a place behind a shield so as not to be exposed as much as possible, but with Casspir’s huge body, it would only be a matter of time before they discovered us.
We’ll save the people while we still can.
“I’ll be right back. When I give you the signal outside, open the rear hatch. Knock three times.”
I tapped the wall to confirm with Milian.
“Yes.”
“Otherwise, don’t open it no matter what; you got PPSh, mags.”
“Yes, I do. Always ready to fire.”
“Good job. Let’s go, Myrril.”
I lock the door and climb from the gun emplacement to the roof.
“Whenever you’re ready.”
A wooden watchtower of some kind that we can see from the top of the cliff is about a hundred yards away, but the tribal chiefs who are supposed to be hanging are in the shadows and out of sight.
A man was standing on the platform shouting something down below. I jumped to the man’s blind spot and hid behind a pile of boxes on the platform. I thought they were crates for transporting supplies, but upon closer inspection, I saw that they were poorly constructed wooden cages. Inside were two exhausted elves, a young woman and a man. The young woman was in her mid-teens. The other was about the same age as the prince. They didn’t react when we appeared next to them.
“I’m going to kill them.”
The crimson fog-like fighting spirit billows from Myrril’s body. Stop it, stop it, or they will find you…
“If you do not want to oppose the Empire, throw your stone at them!”
The man on the platform looked like an officer of the Empire. With a stout demeanor, he shouted at those gathered below.
“…No way.”
I peered around and immediately understood the situation. Surrounded by dozens of sailors, there were more than a dozen elves with nowhere to run. They were forced to hold stones in their hands and throw them at the tribal chiefs hanging in front of the platform.
“These are the criminals who resisted the Imperial Army! If you defend them, you are also traitors! We, as honored subjects of the Empire, must do our duty and burn the village to the ground!”
“They really are scum, aren’t they?”
Myrril-san stands up and immediately approaches the man. She has no intention of hiding anymore, no intention of suppressing her murderous intent.
“What, geehh!”
The man, who looks like an officer, turns around and is hit by Myrril-san’s uppercut, sending him flying through the air. The sailors on watch froze, unable to move as they saw us suddenly appear on the platform.
A shot rang out. The crotch of the officer lying on his back in the middle of the elves exploded.
“A-ahhhhhhhhhh!?”
The man rolled around with a high-pitched scream and a spray of fresh blood, but not even half of the sailors were able to deal with this emergency. Those who came out with curved swords, daggers, and hand spears were also shot in the groin and rolled.
“It’s useless, intimidation.”
Bang. Screams, splashes of blood, and death after falling seven times.
“There’s nothing left to burn.”
Bang, bang, bang. The sailors roll around, spreading fear and despair to the survivors around them, and then they die.
“Um?”
Myrril points her UZI at the soldiers who remain crouched, showing them that anyone who moves is the next target. The soldiers, villagers, tribal chiefs, and everyone else remain motionless.
“What is it? Why are you surprised?”
Myrril’s calm voice echoed in the silence.
“I was just throwing stones at the deadly sinner, just like that bum said.”
Those in need of rescue were the five hanged tribal chiefs and twelve villagers. The enemy was the twenty-five sailors surrounding them. The remaining one is the scum officer. There are only thirteen soldiers left.
“My stones… hurt a little, don’t they?”
The .45 UZI magazines were supposed to hold twenty-two rounds, but she hadn’t even used half of them yet. Four rounds are not enough to take them all out, but she has plenty of options.
“”Uwaaahh…!””
Myrril shoots the sailor in the back with her star pistol as they drop their weapons and try to flee. Whether it was for warmth or mercy, they were shot in the back of the head and fell down, not moving.
“You, help the chief.”
Myrril said to the elven villagers and cut the rope they were hanging from. The tribe chiefs caught below were in bad shape, but there was no time to take care of them here. On the north and northeast side, I saw soldiers who had noticed something unusual coming toward us in groups.
“They came from two directions.”
“Four directions, to be exact.”
Looking back, I saw that there were indeed groups approaching from the southeast and southwest. They numbered no less than two hundred.
“It’s all over.”
Myrril laughed at the frightened villagers who had stopped moving.
“No, they’ll be kicked to the curb in no time. Wait for me; I’ll be back soon to help you. Yoshua.”
“Okay.”
At the same time, Myrril got on my back, and I stowed the cage on the platform. I jump to the roof of the Casspir with the woman and the boy inside.
“Your Majesty, the Demon King.”
“Let’s go, get ready to open the rear hatch!”
“Yes!”
Leaving the woman and boy in the passenger seat, I immediately start the engine and drive off. I look in the rearview mirror and see that the group from the southwest is already a few dozen meters behind us.
They were quickly eliminated by a burst of fire from the gun emplacements.
“Good, move out!”
“Oh!”
The villagers shouted at the majesty of Casspir, who ran a hundred yards in an instant and emerged from behind the platform.
“All right, everyone rides in the back!”
“Huh?”
“Hurry, the enemy is coming!”
“This way, hurry!”
The villagers, their faces frozen with fear, climb aboard one by one, perhaps convinced by the sight of Milian’s face emerging from the rear hatch.
“Are they all on board?”
“Seventeen of them, yes!”
“Okay, Milian, please work your healing magic.”
“Yes!”
The healing began immediately, but there were too many wounded and not enough manpower. Then I remembered.
“Can anyone use healing magic?”
“The tribal chief could, but he needs his power to do it now.”
“That should be enough.”
I looked back at the rear compartment and removed the shackles with the storage.
“Wha…?”
“Milian, you have to heal the tribal chief first.”
“Yes!”
“”Whoaaaa!””
I looked over at the screams of the villagers and saw dozens of arrows about to rain down outside the window.
“Please be quiet! Arrows don’t work on this thing!”
Perhaps because the angle of the arrows was too steep, the arrows made a slight noise and bounced off without leaving a scratch on the window. The villagers finally shut up.
The car was driven at a slow speed to avoid shaking until Milian’s healing magic was complete. After the tribal chief was healed, the three healers were ready to go, and the work began to go smoothly.
“All right, I’m going to pick up the speed a bit. It might be a little bumpy, so sit down or hold on.”
One of the villagers saw us heading toward the enemy coming from the north and ran over to us.
“H-hey… don’t we have to run?”
“Don’t make me laugh. Do you think we would run away from those lowlifes with our tails between our legs?”
PKM light machine guns swarmed from the gun emplacements, and small arms fire rattled the approaching enemies. Wooden shields and leather armor were shot through like paper, and the dead rolled away in a heap.
“What the hell are you doing, standing against the Imperial Army?”
The villagers asked Myrril with a sense of trepidation.
“We’re going to get the children who were taken prisoner. You… will come with us!”
The villagers gasped, looking as if they had been struck to death by Myrril’s words as she shouted from the gun emplacement.
