Chapter 304 – Straying of the Dead
The “Immortal Soldiers” enter the fortress in a disjointed and distorted formation, scaling the walls. They use the lead group attached to the wall as a step, but they don’t seem to care what happens to their comrades.
“Ecla-san, you said they were soldiers who would not die, but what about the manufacturing method?”
“I heard that they implant an insect monster with a magic core in its head.”
“Ugh… they’re totally zombies!”
Seeing my face, Myrril tilted her head.
“What is this thing called a zombie?”
“It’s an old legend from where I came from. A spell is used to bring a corpse back to life. If a zombie bites a living person, that person becomes a zombie too.”
“That’s okay, I guess. Even if it bites you, the bug won’t infect you, it’s too big.”
Too big? Ecla-san laughed, but that did not reassure me at all.
There were two to three hundred immortal soldiers approaching with their flailing movements. Not enough for the two hundred horse-drawn sleighs Myrril had told us about. I look around with my binoculars outside the walls. The cavalry, of which there must be at least five hundred, are circling in formation around the perimeter of the outer wall. The horse-drawn sleighs that had not dismounted the Immortal Soldiers are also dismounting their men and mortars at a distance from the outer wall.
“What is this? Are they not going to attack us?”
“I see that they are planning to send their “Immortal Soldiers” inside the walls and use their cavalry to destroy only those enemies who run away. If the enemy does not run away and shows the position of a siege, then they will bombard the enemy. It makes sense.”
Well, yes. But it seems to go against reason.
Should we destroy the artillery first? Or do we ignore the fortress and the deserters altogether and just take the saint with us? Once we reach Casspir, where Hjelmar is, the Imperial Army will no longer be a threat to us. We have nothing to do with them and no interest in them.
“”S-Saint-Sama!””
A pitiful voice rises, and a group of guards appears on the roof. They are all wearing cloaks of different colors, but they are all deserters of the Republic. If they betrayed their country, they should have taken off their cloaks, but considering the temperature outside, they can’t throw away their winter clothes.
“You finally come out and ask for a sacrifice…?”
When Myrril pointed the gun at them, they raised their hands and shook their heads frantically.
“W-wait, we have no intention of attacking!”
“I don’t know. It is too late to beg for your lives.”
“We only want the saint’s help!”
Before I could raise my voice in frustration, Myrril stepped in and knocked the man to the side. The guard is blown away, rolling with his comrades, his eyes white and faint. He is barely dead, but his face is contorted, and his cheek is clearly marked by the blows.
“…Only, you say? You put all the blame on a girl who has neither the strength nor the friends to fight, and you watch from the sidelines while doing nothing yourself!”
“Th-That’s…”
“Whether you win or lose this war, your sins will not be erased. You will be executed in the end. Don’t you think you should at least fight one last time?”
The eyes of the men swam to Miyuki, the saint. The fact that a big man―who had been in a fighting position―is clinging to a little girl in a dozen different ways is beyond irritating and makes me laugh.
“Don’t get me wrong. The saint is not from the Republic, and she is not a coward who ran from the enemy. We will await the decision of the Council President, but she is not like you.”
“Your Majesty, the Demon Queen, please wait.”
Miyuki stood in front of us and tried to protect the guards. I’m impressed that she remained unwavering in this situation, no matter how strong her feelings were.
“They asked me to save them. I can’t ignore that.”
“That’s a noble attitude. It’s the kind of beautiful thing that people who smell of incense would like to hear.”
Ecla-san tells the saint in a dismayed voice as she looks out into the courtyard.
“Whether you can protect them or not, that’s up to you.
But what will you do after that? Two hundred… no, now it’s more like a hundred and fifty or so. Are you thinking about how you are going to get the money and the supplies and the security to support that many families?”
“T-that’s…”
“Of course, there is no support from the Republic. The Empire is out of the question. The kingdom and the people who summoned you are dead, and I don’t know if the nobles who are holding the country together now will accept compensation. Well, I guess a few gold coins would be the best they could offer.”
“Do you want us to die!”
Myrril clenched her fist at the unexpected sound of the guards’ voices. He was half dead from the slap earlier. This time, he will die.
“Your death is certain, you fools. Don’t you speak of it in the same breath as the saint!”
Just before Myrril hit them, Ecla-san turned around and clapped her hands.
“The talk is over. The Immortal Soldiers have entered the city walls. It’s time for battle. Now, get ready!”
Although she is smiling, the “Witch of Sarz” radiates an icy cold air. Her eyes are not smiling at all, and her magic light is shining all around her. When she tilted her head with a mocking look on her face, a magic circle floated at the feet of the guards.
“There are only two hundred of them. If we hold out a little longer, we’ll survive.
I don’t know what will happen after the second round against the cavalry and artillery. That’s right.”
“I-I don’t want to!”
“I don’t want to die!”
“It was you who forced the saint to do this alone. There is no reason for you to be protected in your own safe place. Ecla-dono!”
“Teleportation!”
At the sound of the witch’s voice, the guards disappear and appear in the courtyard in front of the fortress. Screams erupt as they run for their lives.
Miyuki rushes to Ecla-san, who looks down at her with a blank expression and bows her head.
“Me too, please.”
“How stupid can you be?”
“As long as someone asks for help, I want to respond. I have to help them!”
“…..”
Seeing that the witch does not answer, Miyuki looks back to the stairs. If she doesn’t teleport her, she’ll just walk down on her own. There is nothing we can do to stop her. Not much; I don’t really want to stop her.
“…Well, fine. Yoshua.”
“Ecla-san, could you wait with Hjelmar? It won’t take long.”
Ecla-san looked at me, then at Miyuki, then at me again, and shook her head.
“Well, that’s true for the immortal soldiers, I guess. Maybe even for cavalry and artillery. But once you get involved, it won’t be easy and fast from there on. You know that?”
“Of course, I’m prepared for that. This is also the work of a demon king. I have fallen in love with a troublesome man.”
“Hmm, as expected from my queen. As I go to my death, my heart goes out to you.”
“Oh, geez. Don’t flirt with a depressed look on your face. I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
The demon king and his wife’s little game was overlooked, and the two were sent into the middle of the battle.
