Chapter 305 – Forgive and Takedown
The courtyard in front of the fort is a mess of immortal soldiers and guards. No one is dead, but many are captured, beaten, and bitten, creating a hellish scene of screams and cries. Around the fleeing guards, I rifled through my stockpile of swords, spears, and bows and scattered them. To my dismay, about 30% of them were unarmed.
“What are you doing, are you still a soldier of the Republic?”
A group of immortal soldiers, perhaps seeing us as the biggest threat, came towards us. But there were only about twenty of them. They were quickly eliminated by the bullets of Myrril-san, who chuckled.
“Take up arms, you cowards! The Saint is waiting for you! You’re all former guards, aren’t you? Have you no shame?”
Meanwhile, Miyuki still hits the immortal soldiers with her magic short staff and casts healing magic on the wounded guards. The fact that the battle line has not collapsed even though there is no one left to fight is a miracle in itself. Well, there is also the fact that with the zombies at the front gate and the witch at the back gate, there is no place to retreat.
“If you run away at this stage, I will kill you with my own hands!”
Perhaps annoyed by the trembling guards, Myrril kicked a group of immortal soldiers and shouted.
“There is nowhere to run! This is your last line of defense! Protect the Saint and defeat your enemies! With this spirit, I will absolve you of your mortal sins and give you a new life!”
“”””Eh?””””
The voice that leaked out unintentionally was mixed with mine. Apart from Saint Miyuki, will you also give these guys a chance?
“Sorry, Yoshua, I took the liberty. Now I remember that we were given a chance to redeem ourselves. I take full responsibility for this…”
“No, that’s exactly what I expected from you, Your Majesty.”
“Huh?”
Hearing Myrril’s explanation, I noticed a sudden change in some of the guards who had been frozen in place. With swords and spears in their hands, they began to wield them with a desperate force and a shout that could be either a scream or a war cry.
“All right, I’ll do it! I’ll do it! I’ll do it!”
“Yeah! We’re going to die anyway! This time we’ll go all the way!”
The men, their voices almost crying, quickly push back the group of immortal soldiers. But like an injured, tormented child, they don’t look like they can hold out much longer.
“This time I’ve made up my mind!”
Even though the man is blown away, he stands up and swings his sword with both hands. It doesn’t matter what the sword line is or the distance between the swords; he doesn’t even see the enemy. It was just the will to resist.
“You believed it, didn’t you? “
“You thought you had found us, didn’t you? This time! You’re going to risk your lives for the flag!”
Shouting something inexplicable, they turned and shouted at the still-frightened deserters. Strangely enough, the first soldiers seem to be more poorly built, poorly equipped, and unreliable. The men blessed with the best qualities as soldiers are even more hesitant and uncertain. Perhaps that’s just the way it is.
“”””Ooooh!””””
The immortal soldier, whose movements have slowed down, is stabbed and beheaded. Even though they are immortal, it seems that they are not without vital points.
“Crush their heads! That’ll kill these bastards!”
“”””Ooooh…!””””
“Good, guys, keep it up!”
“Wait, Demon King! Are you going to let them get away with this?”
Ecla-san came out beside us and raised her voice in dismay. That opinion is quite reasonable.
“Even if we only take out the Saint, they will probably be crushed. Miyuki now only sees the value of life in responding to them.”
“That might be true… but…”
“It might be possible to do something if we can break some kind of magic of the northern elves. Can you do it, Ecla-dono?”
“I think I can, but it will take a few days.”
“If that’s the case, that’s not good enough. The matter will be settled by then.”
Seeing the look in Myrril’s eyes, I prepared myself as well. It wasn’t supposed to be like this, but it always is. If Myrril wants, I’ll take a little trouble with a smile on my face.
“At the time of victory!”
I shouted like a demon king, with a smile on my face and a determined voice.
“I will give you roses! If you want to regenerate yourselves under the banner of the Saint, the Demon King of Casemaian will see to it that you get the approval of the Council!”
“”””Oooohhh!””””
Hmm. I did this… I saw the smile on Myrril’s face and muttered quietly that the result was fine.
“Ecla-san, I have a favor to ask of you.”
“If you want me to help these cowards, I refuse.”
“I’m not asking you to do that. The only thing I ask is that you protect the Saint.”
Ecla-san sighed as she watched Miyuki, who was still on the front line, inspiring and healing the guards and swinging her staff.
“You mean you only want water for the roots?”
“Huh?”
“That is a meaningless concession. The roots are connected to the leaves and branches.”
That’s right. Protecting the Saint who is dying to support the deserters is no different from protecting them as a whole.
“Well, that’s fine. I assume you can handle the cavalry and artillery.”
“Of course.”
“It won’t take long.”
Myrril and I moved to stand on top of the northern outer walls. As far as I could see from the top, there were about 30 artillery emplacements. There were about 500 infantry defending the position, with another 500 cavalry to sweep up any remaining enemies. Fifteen of the artillery positions could be seen from the north wall, and the rest were to the east and west.
“Emunanakyu, is it?” [T/n: M79.]
“Please.”
I hand the M79 to Myrril and pull out my RPK light machine gun for cover. The AKM is a little too far away. The ammo is the same as the assault rifle rounds, but the RPK has a slightly longer range and a higher rate of fire.
There is also a PKM light machine gun with rifle ammo that has a higher range, power, and rate of fire, but the ammo is expensive. I don’t want to waste money on a random battle.
“Maybe this shows how small a person I am…”
“Yoshua, what are you doing?”
The artillery turrets exploded one after another, engulfing the surrounding area in a chain of induced explosions. In no time, the artillery units on the north side were destroyed.
“Next, east or west?”
“How about going back to Hjelmars? If we take Casspir, we can slaughter the cavalry at the same time, and it’s a win-win situation.”
Myrril-san is reasonable. I moved south with her in my arms, and we descended to the roof of Casspir’s. Hjelmar, the child elf, was sitting bored in the gun emplacement.
“Sorry to keep you waiting, Hjelmar.”
“You’re late! I thought you had forgotten me.”
“I’m sorry, I half forgot.”
“Hey!”
I laugh and tell him I’m joking, and Myrril-san takes the gun seat. I start the engine and drive Casspir forward, exploring the snowy road. Even with large tires and four-wheel drive, the overweight Casspir is not designed to drive through deep snow. It is not designed to drive in deep snow. It is probably a patrol route for those holed up in the fortress, and it moves forward over well-trodden ruts. We don’t know what’s under the snow, so we don’t want to get off the road. If we get stuck, that’s the time to do it.
“We’re going to go from east to north, then west. We’ll move up so we don’t get stuck.”
“Roger that.”
“Hey, Demon King, what’s going on over there?”
It’s hard to explain.
“Some immortal soldiers came over the walls, but that’s all.”
“How can that be? I can hear the sounds of battle, but no one comes except for the first cavalrymen.”
“That is true. They are waiting outside the walls for the men inside to escape.”
We circled the fortress from the south and climbed the slope toward the center of the fortress. We could see artillery positions scattered across the snowfield, with infantry and cavalry deployed around them. Ruts from horse-drawn sleighs ran in all directions, confusing Casspir’s route.
“We need to smash the cavalry and artillery. It would help if you could open fire on the artillery positions.”
“From there? I’m fine outside.”
“I’m sorry, but you’ll have to stay in the wagon. If anything goes wrong, Ecla-san will be furious with me.”
A PKM light machine gun fires at the gun emplacement, and one by one, the cavalrymen fall. Hjelmar’s attack magic sets the artillery position on fire, and the gunpowder explodes and goes to pieces.
“As long as the artillery and cavalry are destroyed, you don’t need to force the infantry to kill them.”
“Understood.”
However, the cavalry alone numbered five hundred, and although they had been cut down somewhat, there were still over three hundred. …And yet.
“…Something’s wrong.”
Of the remaining cavalry, about a hundred or so are coming at us with extraordinary speed and agility. And I mean that literally.
“What is that, a centaur?”
“I don’t know what a centaur is, but this monster is troublesome. Judging by its magical power, it’s a mass of physical enhancements.”
