Chapter 306 – The Fleeing Demon King

“What the hell is that?”

These cavalry… I’m not sure if I can call them that, but they have the lower body of an imperial horse, which is more than a size larger than a normal sleigh horse, and a relatively slender human body, perhaps for running purposes. Probably due to balance issues, the human body was shorter than that of a centaur, and the upper half of the body, which only reached the dove’s tail, was attached to the body with a forward tilt.

“Huh, a human-horse soldier.”

Hjelmar, the child elf, reacted coldly to the sight of the Imperial Army’s Centaur in light armor.

For a self-proclaimed “newcomer to the magic academic zone,” is that really all it takes to get a “huh” out of him? We were forced to take a bite (even if only out of curiosity) of the unusual and outstanding performance we were seeing for the first time, even though we were enemies.

“Do you know what this is?”

“No. A centaur is a monster that appears in old myths. They are the servants of the demon king who destroyed the world, or something like that. I think they are a reenactment of that.”

Myrril’s eyes turn to me as she comes down from the gun emplacement.

“No, no, I don’t know. Then I’m not the ‘Demon King’, am I?”

Hjelmar laughs and shakes his head.

“I know. I just thought it was unusual.”

“Unusual?”

“The mages, especially the old men in the Special Magic Academic Zone, are all eccentric and self-important, but they still approach magic with a purpose. But in the Empire, I feel it’s different. I’m sure they have their own agendas, but…”

Pedantic. It’s more like learning for the sake of social position or knowledge to show off. It’s a kind of embarrassing academic spirit, I guess, but that’s not how the relatives judge it. However…

“The ‘magic technology of the empire’ is playing with other people’s minds, making soldiers who don’t die, attaching a man to a horse, etc.? If we look at it in the most favorable light… ‘expanding human potential’?”

In fact, I think the very technology the Emperor has is an idea similar to medicine in the broadest sense of the word. The Emperor doesn’t seem to have the slightest intention of using it for peaceful purposes. First of all, there is no way to turn one person into a monster after another.

“I don’t know what he’s trying to do, but these human-horse soldiers seem to be a bit different.”

Looking at Myrril, she shook her head.

“I don’t get it. They are trying very hard to make people less human with their strange ideas. The only things that caught my attention were the bronze cannon and the golem. Other than that, they are just disgusting.”

While we were busy doing whatever it was we did, the cavalry, including the monsters, seemed to be targeting Casspir. It was obvious that we were a threat to them, as we had quickly destroyed their artillery position, which was their only hope.

“They seem to be up to something.”

The front line was brought out by heavily armed cavalrymen with long spears. They formed a line and charged forward like a single creature. Meanwhile, the cavalry disappeared into the forest surrounding the fort. Their intention to go around was obvious, but Casspir’s huge body would not allow them to enter the forest, nor would it foolishly give chase. Myrril climbed onto the gun emplacement and aimed the PKM light machine gun at the front.

“Hjelmar, the monsters are probably coming from the forest to our rear right. If you can aim at them, take a look. Yoshua, could you point Casspir’s head a little to the right?”

“”Roger that.””

Casspir had six dots on each side but none on the back. I got as far away from the woods behind me as I could, but only about a hundred yards or so, which I secured because I couldn’t get far enough away from the ruts. After bringing it to a halt, I also start a supporting attack with the RPK light machine gun from the gun sight. Myrril opens fire on the heavy infantry coming from the front. There were screams and metallic sounds, but I didn’t have time to look in that direction.

“Forty man-horse coming from the rear!”

Almost at the same time as Myrril’s voice, dozens of huge bodies fly out in a swarm.

“They are fast!”

The charge was faster than the full speed of an off-road motorcycle. As we passed each other, what appeared to be hand spears thrown at us made a dull thud as they hit the bodies of the vehicles. I fired an RPK to counterattack, but they scattered and were immediately evaded. With my skill, I can’t aim and hit. I guess it would have been better to stay on course, but there was no way I could do that, not being a naval machine gunner.

“You two, cover your eyes for a moment!”

I covered my eyes with my arm. There was a crackling sound, and for a moment the outside of the car was brightly lit. It was as if the sound had been removed.

“Okay, good.”

Hjelmar’s voice made me look outside, and I saw the man-horse soldiers staggering and running away in confusion. They were holding their faces and screaming like animals. It was unclear what level of intelligence they had, but it was obvious that they had been blinded by the flash of light. Hjelmar fired offensive magical firebombs from the gun sight, and I also sent RPK assault rifle rounds into the enemies nearby. When we finally killed a few of them, Myrril, at the gun emplacement, destroyed the rest with the PKM light machine gun. The PKMs, which are full-size rifle rounds, have greater range and power, and the shooters are more skilled, so the results of the battle are off by an order of magnitude.

“Yoshua, advance!”

“Copy that.”

The few remaining artillery positions on the western side were probably the last, but more than half of the cavalry and horsemen were still there. The infantry, too, though with the Casspir, they are not much of a threat.

“I see that the infantry is forming up in a tight formation in front of us. About a hundred… in three positions.”

“Myrril, if you think you’re in danger, get in the vehicle.”

If they want to fight us, we’ll run them over without a second thought.

“Archers and infantry are no problem. Give me a spare ammo belt.”

I handed her two hundred rounds of consolidated boxed rifle ammunition and returned to the driver’s seat.

“As soon as they’re in range, we’ll scatter them with the M79s. Keep your speed.”

“Roger that.”

With that, I pushed the Casspir forward at a slow speed, and we headed north toward the fort. We drive over the ruts, which makes it easier for the enemy to time their attacks. As we brace ourselves, we see that behind a dense formation of combined shields, the archers seem to be preparing to fire a volley.

A crack echoes through the air, and an explosion occurs in the center of the enemy position. The rolled infantrymen scream and crawl around in agony. The unexpected attack demoralizes them, and as they scramble to flee, they are cut down by small-arms fire.

“That was the nearest infantry squad. Keep up your pace and head for the second largest group.”

“No, they’ll run.”

I was ready to speed up in pursuit, but the enemy did not move.

“Huh? They’re not moving. Why?”

“The mages are behind and to the left and right of the dense formation. They think that the Demon Queen’s weapons are magic tools or something. Maybe they think they can counter it with a defensive magical circle or a magic barrier.”

As if to confirm Hjelmar’s prediction, the soldiers gather a bit in the center and are enveloped in a bluish-white magical light.

“We have seen this many times in the battle at Casemaian. A royal court mage died with a smile on his face.”

The magic light flashed, and a ball of flame, which seemed to be an offensive magic, came toward us. There were about twenty softball-sized balls.

“Myrril, get in the car!”

“Don’t worry. There is not enough magic power, magic pressure, or flying distance.”

Just as she said this in a relaxed voice, the flaming bullets stalled in their trajectory and fell in front of Casspir, sending up a cloud of snow and smoke. The M79 grenade fired from the gun emplacement was sucked into the center of the dense formation in a mountainous arc, scattering blood splatters and screams. The next round fired as a finishing blow mowed down even the screams. After taking out the crawling survivors with small arms fire, Myrril pointed ahead in a somewhat weary voice.

“The dense formation in the rear seems to have been broken. But… what’s going on? They’re running down the tracks like fools.”

There was no way they could outrun the cars on foot in the snow, even at low speed.

“If they’re hostile, shoot to kill; if they don’t come at you, ignore them. Our first priority is the artillery position on the west side…”

I was aware that I was developing bad habits, but I wouldn’t dream of shooting or running over unresisting defeated soldiers in the back.

“Is it okay?”

Hjelmer asked suspiciously. It’s not okay. I know that. But is this something I, a non-Republican, have to take the blame for?

“It’s too late for that, Yoshua. We are involved in this, right?”

That’s right. You are absolutely right. It’s not about mind reading. Not wanting to admit that I’m still a bit of a wimp, I smile with a forced Demon King smile. Even though she can’t see me from the gun emplacement.

“Of course I understand, my queen. In any case, the Imperial Army… or even the Empire will burn to ashes. Whether it is late or early, it is only a matter of order.”

I was relieved that the problem had been postponed, but of course, it had not. After a pause, as if to say, “You must be looking at me as if you were looking at a poor child,” a sighing voice came from the gun emplacement.

“No, you don’t understand. You’ve put off the order of things for too long, and now it’s time to come back.”

“…..”

I suppose that’s true. The Emperor should not have been left alone after the invasion of the mounted golem forces. That is why I sent the wrong political will to the Emperor. This is a burden. My stupidity and naivete caused this.

“I take back what I said earlier, Myrril. We will destroy our enemies. No one will return alive.”

I turned around and stepped on the gas with a dark feeling towards the Imperial Army infantry troops, who were running away in a frightened and panicked state.
