Chapter 312 – The Sacrificial Children
After a while, it started to get dark, so we quickly got the hang of the terrain and started preparing dinner. We built a fire and grilled the venison skewers in the shade of a large tree in the forest on a slightly elevated hill to ensure we had a good view. We planned to pitch our tent a little further on.
“Oh, it smells good!”
“I had garlic powder and pepper, so I’ll put out some flatbread later.”
We boiled water in a pot and stewed the meat around the bones with root vegetables. The seasoning was also salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Apparently, the best meat was the one near the bone. By the way, Myrill butchered the deer quickly.
“Myrill, you’re really good at butchering deer. It was a lot of work when we butchered rabbits at the pirate stronghold before.”
“That was for the children to experience, so I didn’t touch them.”
“I see. But still, aren’t there too many?”
There are more than thirty large skewers of grilled meat around the campfire. That is enough for about twenty people.
“What, it’s going to run out soon.”
“…..”
Myrril stopped me with a gesture as I drew my weapon in response to the presence. There were more than twenty pairs of eyes gleaming in the depths of the forest. I could hear their breaths being suppressed with all their might. I could feel a strong emotion, but I didn’t know what it was.
“Would you like some venison?”
Myrril called to them in a cheerful voice. I know from the soft tone of her voice that they are not our enemies. They are probably not even adults.
The hard snow crunches beneath their feet. They are defenseless, lost, and light.
“Children?”
“Can you take their collars off before they come any closer? I have a bad feeling about this.”
“Hey, you don’t mean…”
As soon as they came into view, I put away as many collars as I could see, but immediately after that, the children rushed at us, crying.
“””Aaaaaaahhhhhh!”””
“Mir!”
“It’s okay!”
Myrill shouted as she grabbed the dozen or so children.
“It’s okay, it’s okay, you’re all right, you and your families have been taken in by the Demon King of Casemaian! We will never abandon you! If anyone harms you, the Demon King of Destruction and his wife will not forgive them!”
The children all looked at each other in confusion. They rubbed their necks, wondering why nothing was happening.
This is the worst. This is really the worst, in a way that’s even worse than shit.
“Did they force these kids to commit suicide attacks?”
“Something like that. Those idiots are all lined up with stupid looks on their faces, trying to check the results.”
Myrill comforts the children with one hand and spreads death with the other. Every time she fires her UZI, a magical light scatters from the bushes, and something large collapses. There are four of them. The remaining one runs away screaming. It turns out that the one who ran out of the forest was a soldier in the uniform of the Imperial Army. An angry bullet is fired into the back of the fleeing figure in black.
“Wait for us, old man! Your life will end tomorrow, too!”
The bullet fired with a roar, hit the golem playing the role of the camera, who had been hiding in the shadows of the trees behind them. The magic stone embedded in its head shattered, releasing a pale blue magic light.
After a short sigh, Myrill turned UZI around and held the children in her arms with both hands.
“You’re all right now. Are you hungry? The meat and the soup are ready. There’s bread, too. There’s water and tea. After you eat, I’ll give you something sweet.”
The children, who had been in a state of panic, began to calm down as they listened to the kind voice. However, they probably didn’t think that they would be able to return home safely. Those who turned their faces to me immediately looked away, clinging to Myrril as if to ask for help.
Ah, you. That’s my treasure, so don’t touch it too much, or I’ll lose it.
Of the eleven children, eight were beastmen. Two were elves, and one was a dwarf. In short, the Empire must have used these demi-humans, who had no human rights, as pawns. It’s disgusting, but to begin with, even humans are used as pawns, zombies, and golems, so in a way, they’re the same.
They all looked thin, and their eyes glistened, just like the brown elf children I had seen at the pirate stronghold. They probably weren’t much older, either. The elves’ ears were still short, and I couldn’t tell them apart from humans until they told me themselves.
“Look, the meat is already cooked. If you don’t eat it soon, it will burn, you know?”
“If you want soup, please take a bowl. The bread and spoons are on top of the box.”
The werewolf boy, who had taken a piece of bread and was trying to hide it in his pocket, stiffened when he saw me.
“You can take as much as you want, and if it’s not enough, I’ll give you more. There’s no need to hide it, so eat as much as you want…”
That’s when I realized why. That’s right. Even though he’s so thin, he came here ready to die.
“Who are you bringing it back for?”
Myrill asked gently, and the werewolf boy whispered an answer with tears in his eyes.
“…For my sister. She’s always hungry.”
“Oh, you are a good brother. I’ll prepare a gift for your sister. First you should eat it yourself. I’ll make sure to give some to your family as well.”
“””…Really?”””
I take out some boxes of emergency food and show them.
“Ah, look. When we get to your place tomorrow, I’ll give you some of these. These are light and come in a strong bag, so they won’t go bad even if you don’t eat them right away. But grilled meat and bread are only good if you eat them right away, right?”
I try to dispel the children’s suspicion and caution.
“Go ahead and eat as much as you want. We’ll get the same. Look, tomorrow is going to be a long trip. If you don’t fill your stomachs, you’ll collapse, won’t you?”
The children timidly put the meat and bread in their mouths and immediately began to stuff themselves. The bear beastman child, biting into the meat while crying, keeps muttering, “It’s delicious, it’s delicious.”
“…I’m going to kill him.”
As she looked over at the children chewing their food with sobs, Myrill’s true feelings slipped out of her mouth. They say I lose my patience when it comes to children. In the end, it’s just like that.
“We’re a similar couple, aren’t we?”
“I guess we are.”
After dinner, I take Casspir into the woods and lay out blankets in the back. I tell the children that we are leaving for the Imperial Capital tomorrow and have them wrap themselves in blankets and sleeping bags. I repeatedly reassure the child, who looks worried and keeps looking around, by tapping the iron armor and telling him that he is absolutely safe in the armored car and that it is stronger than a castle…
The children fell asleep with happy faces and no stomach aches from eating too much too fast.
“Myrill, are these children from the Imperial Capital?”
I asked them too, but their speech was so full of caution, tension, and interest in food that it was completely incomprehensible. My ability to piece together their story and make a judgment was not enough.
“Yes. There is a slum outside the walls of the Imperial Capital where only demi-humans live. It seems that the soldiers kidnapped them there.”
“So they want them to attack us?
“Yes. They put collars on them and told them that if they didn’t kill the Demon King, their families would die. They said they would give their families gold when they died. …It’s not like those people who throw away money would use a trick like that.”
Myrill exhales with a face full of anger. There are similar stories in my former world. But at least there was a recognition that using children was a low act.
“That’s good, Myrill.”
“What?”
I look at her, who has turned around with sharp eyes and a smile.
“This time I won’t hesitate. I’m going to kill all the enemies that come at me until the end. The Emperor, the soldiers, everyone who is on their side.”
I thought that the desire to kill was the end result of hatred. I thought that the pure desire to kill, without hesitation or doubt, was born as an extension of violence and frustration. But I don’t think that’s the case.
What I’m feeling now is a sense of closeness to the Emperor. The more I get angry and the more I hate him, the more I feel like I’m getting closer to this old man I’ve never met. I can’t wait to see his eyes. I can’t wait to hear his last breath. Tomorrow, I’ll kill the Emperor, no matter how difficult it is, no matter how far I have to hunt him.
And then I will fall into a happy sleep, dreaming of the carnage that awaits the next day.
