Chapter 313 – Monastery Gate
The next morning, the weather was clear and sunny, with not a cloud in the sky. After getting Casspir out of the forest, we headed for the Imperial Capital on the well-maintained Imperial Highway. There was snow on the road, but underneath it was a hard, simple pavement. Even a vehicle weighing over ten tons wouldn’t get stuck easily.
“It’s a good day for hunting.”
“I guess so. Do you know how far it is to the Imperial Capital?”
“I don’t know the exact distance, but it’s about 150 miles.”
That’s about 240 or 250 kilometers. If nothing goes wrong, we’ll be there by noon. Of course, there’s no such thing as nothing going wrong. Sure enough, after about an hour of driving, we saw what looked like an over-decorated castle up ahead.
“A fortress? …But it has a unique atmosphere.”
We looked through binoculars from a small hill about a kilometer away, looking for a way to get through. There might have been a way to go around the forest, but in reality, it seemed like the only option was to go straight through. Or rather, considering that a main road runs through the castle, it looks like a facility built as a checkpoint to interrogate Republic citizens entering the Imperial capital.
Its old-fashioned appearance suggests a long history.
There are only a few low bell towers, and the roof is not very high. The area surrounded by the delicate castle walls is probably a bit smaller than the Ilm Fort. There is a flag, but it is not the Imperial Army’s flag with some kind of emblem on a white background.
“I have seen that flag somewhere before. Yoshua, keep moving forward.”
We slowly advance Casspir, considering the possibility of ambushes in the woods on either side. Myrril, who was about to climb up to the gun emplacement to keep watch, suddenly looked at me.
“Can you hand me the ‘Arupike’?”
“Huh?”
I handed over a box magazine-type RPK light machine gun and a magazine. It seems that the PKM light machine gun, which uses small-caliber bullets and has a belt-link magazine, is ready when the time comes.
“If you need ammunition, can I get it for you?”
“What, if it’s the enemy, the Asaruto Rifuru bullets are enough.”
When we were able to see the full extent of the facility, Myrill let out a voice of disgust.
“That is the flag of the Imperial Orthodox Church. It looks like a temple.”
“Does that mean there’s a monastery or something here?”
“Monastery” didn’t register with Myrill. I didn’t know how religion worked in this world, and I had very little religious knowledge from my former world, so I decided not to explain.
“I don’t know what they worship there, but it seems to be a God who likes to make a big show of things. Also, the believers are bloodthirsty.”
Looking through my binoculars, I see something hanging from the top of the castle wall. My eyesight only allows me to see the silhouette, but according to Myrill, it appears to be two women, probably beastkin. They are either unconscious or dead, and they are not moving.
Really, they are doing one annoying thing after another. If you want to see blood so much, I’ll let you see as much as you want.
“Mir, I’m counting on you for support.”
“Leave it to me.”
After a short rest, I climbed up to the gun emplacement and used teleportation to fly to the top of the castle wall. Before the surrounding defenders could react, I untied the rope in my storage and returned to Casspir, carrying the two women in my arms.
“Nee-chan!”
The werewolf child clings to one of the women I’ve taken with me. She responds to my voice, but her level of consciousness is low. The two elf children can use basic healing magic, so I leave the treatment to them.
“After ordering small children to attack with suicide attacks, they’re even willing to sacrifice the children’s families.”
According to the elf children, they are exhausted, but it seems that their lives are not in danger. Once the women are asleep, we turn Casspir towards the castle walls. We can’t get to the Imperial Capital without going through here. On the castle walls, we can see figures moving around at a hectic pace. Some of them point at us. Perhaps because they are not soldiers or because of their equipment, there is no sign of archers firing arrows.
“…What are you talking about, gold coins, you lowlifes?”
The RPK light machine gun spits out bullets, mowing down the monks who are standing on the castle wall. A man in a dark military uniform, who looks like a commander, hides behind the breast wall and shouts something. It appears that small mortars and catapults have been pulled out, but they have been blown to pieces by the M79 grenades fired by Myrill.
Blood and flesh are scattered from the castle walls onto the snowy plain, and the temple’s long-range attack forces are destroyed. We continue to advance.
“If they had sensed the attack, they would have sent cavalry and infantry immediately, but… they’re so slow.”
The M79 grenade is sucked into the gap in the slowly opening castle gate. Three shots are fired at an increasing angle. As the gate opens, the figure of monk soldiers can be seen writhing around. There were about 30 wounded. There also seemed to be about the same number of survivors, but they were just running around in a panic and didn’t seem to be coming towards us.
We closed the distance and finished them off with the RPK light machine gun.
“That was quick.”
“It’s just the beginning. Let’s take it easy.”
Casspir slowly drives past the temple built across the highway. The castle gate on the other side remains closed, but the wooden doors and other defenses are of no use against an armored vehicle. Without getting out, we use the bumper to break the lock. Myrril looks at the cavalrymen who are following us as if they’ve just remembered.
“Yoshua, can you hand me some ‘Pepeesha’ and some magazines?”
Myrill asks, putting the RPK and UZI she was carrying on the passenger seat.
“What we’re going to need from now on is not accuracy or power, but simply the number of bullets needed to wipe out countless small fry. Right now, ‘Tokarefu bullets’ are probably the most plentiful, aren’t they?”
“I appreciate you thinking about saving ammunition, but you don’t have to push yourself too hard, you know?”
“It’s true that we have to think about the future, but the ‘Pepeesha’ isn’t a bad weapon if you choose the right use for it. It’s fast and good for scattering bullets. The Tokarefu bullets are good, so they don’t die quickly. That means we’ll be able to greatly reduce the enemy’s fighting power, right?”
Even in my former world, this is a concept that has become widespread in modern times. By inflicting casualties instead of killing instantly, more damage and confusion can be inflicted on the enemy forces over a larger area and for a longer period of time.
“I see. Then I’ll leave it up to you.”
While it’s true that if we don’t have enough weapons, arms, or ammunition, we can just buy more, I honestly don’t think we’ll be able to use up 200,000 rounds of Tokarev bullets unless total war breaks out. If that happens, I guess we’ll just have to make do with the handgun rounds we have.
“There’s also a rifle that uses the same bullets, the Bizon.”
Looking at the shortened, stockless version of the AKM-like submachine gun I was trying out, Myrill shook her head with a wry smile.
“It looks interesting, but don’t use your first weapon on the battlefield.”
Hmm, that’s a good point. For now, I’ll give her three PPSh-41 submachine guns, along with the boxed ammunition and spare magazines. Myrill loads one of the guns and carries two on her back. She stuffs the ammunition and magazines into her pack.
“Yoshua, keep up your pace.”
Myrril calms the frightened children and heads for the rear compartment, where she begins to aim at the cavalrymen.
“…W-we’re going to get killed!”
“Don’t worry, there’s nothing to be afraid of. You’re already under the Demon King’s protection. Look out that window. But don’t touch those weapons over there.”
Even with the PPSh she had just picked up, Myrill’s marksmanship was still in good shape, and she continued to shoot down the enemy cavalrymen one by one with accurate point-blank shots. If it were my skill, I’d have killed the horses, too. Even the children were confused by the speed of her destruction.
“”””…E-eehhh?””””
“With the Demon King’s power, it’s all over in an instant.”
That was fast. She didn’t even use two magazines against nearly thirty cavalrymen. When Myrill returned to the passenger seat, she loaded the empty magazines one by one and stuffed them into her bag.
“Well, this is where it starts. The role of these warrior monks is to delay the enemy and alert the Imperial Capital. From here on, they’ll throw as many soldiers at us as they can.”
Even though she anticipated a critical situation, her face was calm and bright.
“If they think they can stop the Demon King with just their bodies, then…”
