Chapter 325 – The Turkey and Me
“How do you expose him?”
It is good to keep a distance before dealing with them, but it is not crucial. The fact that there are so many opponents, and they are holed up in the castle, could lead to a stalemate where both sides stare at each other, and time just passes. That’s fine, but our goal is to kill the Emperor, not to have a blind date with a summoned mercenary.
“Watch me, they’ll be out soon enough.”
Myrril fires several rifle bullets into the center with a PKM light machine gun and several into the upper watchtower with a finger-cut point shot. The distance is a few hundred meters, so I can’t really see what’s going on, but I can see a few figures tumbling down from the tower.
“Was there surveillance… is that a person? Or is that a moving corpse with a magic core embedded in it?”
“It was the Piemusi’s shooter and his assistant. They were carrying what looked like sniper rifles.”
A sniper and an observer, huh? If we had been running around without any protection, we would have been shot.
“Who just shot downstairs?”
“Someone trying to shoot through the hole we came out of. Whoever was looking through the window on the lower level was either an Imperial artilleryman or an assault mage. You can see some kind of pipe, can’t you?”
I can’t see it. I checked with binoculars, but it was not clear to my eyesight. All I could tell was that there was a series of openings, like gun sights or something, a little further back from the wall.
“That’s a good distance. From their point of view, it’s too far to aim from, and too close to be a target when it comes down to it.”
Wherever they are, they are a target, Myrril said, pointing her PKM here and there and firing short bursts. Each time she does this, she seems to be steadily cutting down the enemy, but they are too far away for me to see.
“From their point of view, your teleport is a nuisance, even if they want to fortify the castle. If they see us shooting at them through walls with no safe place to rest, they’ll try to take the fight to us.”
“No, I don’t care about the lower ranks, but the commander will stop them.”
That’s the point, Myrril said, pointing to a flag flying from the top of the Imperial Palace.
“This red flag indicates the presence of the Emperor, the Imperial Family, or the head of state in the palace. The black flag below it means that the country’s strongest troops are stationed there. In short, it is a sign of authority.”
“What do you mean by the strongest force? Like the Imperial Guard Division?”
“If there are soldiers in the Imperial Guard, they are protecting the Emperor, right? The flag indicates that they are the Imperial Piemusi. Those guys… at least their commander are treated like a hero, right?”
Uh… I see. If the summoned one is the most powerful force, it is probably not allowed to stand idly by and endure attacks from the outside. When Myrril said “attempt to attack,” she didn’t mean voluntarily but by force or coercion.
I don’t know if they have veto power. I’m sure they don’t. The body of the man shot upstairs is dumped next to the driver’s side of the Casspir.
“Oh, I knew it.”
“They were forced to wear the slave’s collar.”
Called to a dying country in a strange world and attacked at the behest of an old man? It’s pathetic, but it’s not my problem.
“Yoshua!”
The back door of the palace opens, and a group of soldiers appears. A mobile battery on wheels is pushed out of the front left and right. It is equipped with a long, thin gun barrel. It is probably a new type of rear-loaded cannon, the same type that was mounted on the Republic’s self-propelled artillery-like golem. It looks like a bronze cannon, though.
“Even Casspir might not be able to survive a direct hit from that.”
“That’s true, but I don’t think they’d sit idly by until then. What are you going to do with a long-range weapon in front of you, you idiot?”
The artillery was swept away by the PKMs, and after a brief pause as the M79s sounded, a loader wagon, protected by a large shield, exploded in the rear. Lying around the shattered and blown-up carts and mobile batteries are only Imperial Army soldiers in ink-colored cloaks; there are no PMC fighters.
“No way… they’re not here.”
I could see Myrril, who was sitting at the gun emplacement, becoming more alert. No one moved around her, only a strange feeling of tension.
“The strongest force in the palace guards the emperor?”
“The troops protecting the royalty and nobility are supposed to act as shields. I can only imagine what warfare is like in your part of the world based on the weapons I have touched. The offensive capability of the soldiers is great, but their defensive capability is inferior to that of heavily armed infantry, is it not?”
“They are inferior. At best, they have hard, sturdy plates attached to the front and back of their torso to maintain mobility. Even that is not common in PMC.”
It is more natural to think that we will eventually be forced to strike. Should we just wait and see what happens, or…
“Yoshua! Forward, hurry!”
Myrril came tumbling back into the car from the gun emplacement. I stepped on the gas to start the Casspir.
“To the right, towards the ramparts!”
As I was about to ask her to explain what the hell was going on, I was startled by the sight of flames in the rearview mirror. It was no more powerful than a grenade or rocket launcher.
“A homemade bomb? Was it planted in this place? How did you find it…?”
“No!”
“Huh?”
“I didn’t locate it. I found it on the back of the car. If it had been released from somewhere else, it would have been noticed sooner. Did it sneak up on us with some kind of Rinko-like perception block? …No.”
She was probably half convinced that was not the case. Myrril shook her head.
“I wonder if there’s some kind of ability that makes something appear that’s the opposite of what you’ve stored.”
Her ominous prediction came true. A space-ball appeared directly in front of Casspir as we ran. I turned the wheel to avoid it, but before I could get past it, there was an explosion at the back of the car. A strange sound comes from the shaking car body, and the speed drops dramatically. Are the tires damaged, or is it the drivetrain? Either way, the enemy seems to have caused enough damage to drive us back. I maintain my speed as long as I can, keeping an eye on my surroundings. It is not long before I hear the rising creak of metal.
“Mir, prepare to dismount and fight.”
“That’s what I want.”
Myrril-san smiles. For me, who had planned to survive by destroying enemies from out of range, this isn’t what I want.
