Chapter 328 – The Kaiser Was…
I don’t know if it’s the Emperor who’s spying, or the commander of the summoned, or both, but if he’s aware of the situation…
“Yoshua!”
“Well, this is how it’s going to be.”
I stored the homemade bomb that appeared in front of me, along with the multiple IEDs, grenades, and Molotov cocktails that were raining down from the sky like a rainstorm, and since I couldn’t keep up with them, I shifted to get out of the room. Immediately after that, there was an explosion in the room, but once we were out of the room, it did not matter. We continued down the corridor, and along the way, Myrril pointed ahead.
“There are some other things here.”
A statue of the Emperor holding a spherical magical core. Several statues of various sizes were placed in the corners of the corridor and at the bottom of the stairs.
“What a cute Emperor. He seems to be a bit more cunning than I thought, sneaking around and eavesdropping.”
“Perhaps there is no point in provoking him any further. He has been backed into a corner more than enough.”
I don’t know how much stock there is, but IEDs, explosives, and combustibles are pouring down one after another, exploding into flames.
“I think that would cause damage itself, but maybe they’re not in there?”
“I don’t know, but I don’t see any other way out. Either they have a plan to save themselves, or they are too far gone to think of anything else.”
“”No threat.””
“Oh?”
Hearing the familiar phrase, Myrril points to the stairs. Inside, there are spiral staircases at both ends of the corridor, leading from the ground to the top floor. One of them is the one we climbed on our last visit.
“First and second squad, stay behind to scout the area, the rest of you go to the upper floors!”
“”Copy that.””
The fighters who were outside heard our attack and came back.
The spiral staircase leads to the entrances of each floor, but the staircase itself is isolated from and independent of the corridors and rooms. Although this structure gives the impression of being rather plain for the Emperor’s residence, it was designed to be the last defense base of the Imperial Capital. The staircase is in full view of climbers from the upper floors, and archers could inflict serious damage if they shot arrows at it. The landing of the staircase is suspended from an unusually slender structure for the area, and it appears to have been designed to allow the entire staircase to fall (or collapse spontaneously) if a large force were to attack the building.
“What are you looking at, Yoshua?”
“No, just wondering what they’re doing. If they were going to attack us, they shouldn’t have brought their soldiers here. This place is designed that way.”
No matter how well thought out the structure is, it is meaningless if the soldiers are not stationed here. In the case of the Imperial Palace, there may not even be enough soldiers to conduct a defensive battle. This is absolutely outrageous.
“No matter how clever the designers and builders are, they are useless if the people who use them are idiots. It is not an uncommon story.”
The same as Myrril’s mechanical bow. I nodded silently, without speaking. I saw a group of fully armed men running up the stairs. About half of them wore heavy armor, and the other half wore casual PMC gear. At a glance, there were forty or fifty of them. Maybe a little more. If two squads stayed on the lower level, there would be about twenty people. The total was less than a hundred.
“I’m sorry, Myrril, but…”
“It’s all right, just give it back to them.”
I tossed the homemade bombs, grenades, and Molotov cocktails I’d taken into storage, but I didn’t want them to be in a state of near explosion for mental health reasons.
I moved from the staircase section to the hallway section and looked back to see the entire spiral staircase collapse with a sound like an earth tremor.
“Ooooh!?”
“””Ooooooooooooooooo!”””
With screams, shouts, explosions, sounds of flames, and roars of debris hitting the ground.
After several minutes of shaking, the creaking floor held without collapsing. Looking down from the edge of the collapsed corridor, I could see the folded remains of flesh, wood, and stone burning far below, mixed with grease and oil. The smoke, mixed with the smell of burning protein, was terrible, but there was no sign of the fire spreading from the collapsed area to the surrounding area.
“”…Well.””
Myrril and I both uttered the same word, turning our backs on the wreckage of the stairs. We didn’t really know what “well” was.
