Chapter 329 – God’s Name Is

Soon, the generous handing out of homemade bombs had stopped. There’s also a statue of the Emperor holding a magic core in the corner of the hallway where we are now, so it seems unlikely that they don’t know where we are. Maybe they’re out of stock, or…

“Does that mean it is within a distance where the damage will reach them?”

If that’s the case, where are they?

We move on, keeping a watchful eye on our surroundings. About ten meters ahead, in the middle of the corridor, there is a wide, short flight of stairs. It leads to a wide landing that is one step higher. Are the soldiers waiting here? On either side of the landing are pikes, shields, and swords, as well as polished, heavy armor. Perhaps this is the result of trying to make the weapons part of the display rather than leaving them out in the open. To be honest, they look rather out of place, and I don’t think it works very well. There are no soldiers. If it’s a sword fight, that’s one thing, but if you’re dealing with firearms, a sentry without any cover is just a target.

“You’re right, Yoshua.”

Beyond the landing is an ornate staircase, and at the end is a pair of heavy double doors.

“Any sign of the guards?”

“About twenty, maybe more.”

This appears to be the room where the Emperor is hiding. Assuming this is the last line of defense for the guards, the PMC commander should be there as well.

We hid behind the wall at the bottom of the stairs and threw the homemade bomb I had stashed in front of the door. There was a roar, and we could hear the sound of wood and building materials collapsing.

“The Piemusi is here too.”

Looking out from cover, I saw a large number of small-caliber bullets, probably M4s, hitting the stairs and floor and ricocheting around. Expecting a counterattack, I moved out of the line of fire and hid by the door. At the same time I was taking up the position, Myrril was mowing down the men in the room.

“Twelve down, and the rest… about fifteen. Yoshua, here…”

She held out her PPSh in both hands, so I put it away and handed her the M79. I didn’t wait to hear the end of her sentence before making my decision, but it seemed she hadn’t made a mistake because I could hear a happy-sounding sniffle in my ear. Immediately, grenades were thrown at key points in the room, and the Emperor’s quarters were transformed into a hellish scene of screaming and wailing. Although I held the ammunition belt so that it would be easy to reload, it only took about three seconds to fire five shots.

“Threat eliminated… no, the boss is still here.”

On the imposing throne-like chair in the middle, a middle-aged man was protecting himself with a tower-like large shield, and he was protecting a weak old man.

The commander of the PMC and the Emperor? He didn’t seem very dignified, and I didn’t feel any class or style. He wasn’t the kind of person I had imagined. Even the shadow warrior, who was a bit over the top, looked more like the Emperor.

“It’s a bit disappointing that the last fight of the old man who caused us so much trouble was so weak.”

“You bastard!”

The PPSh went off with a bang. It was probably the backup weapon Myrril had strapped to her back. The PMC commander’s body went limp as he was shot through the exposed toes. The middle-aged man, hit in the shoulder and knee, rolled around groaning.

“Shut up, you lowlife.”

Myrril quickly unfastened the leather belt that was attached to my body and jumped off my back.

“Don’t tell me you don’t know who’s here. He is the most powerful man on the continent, ruling over the Pure Land of the West, Casemaian, and is known as the ‘Demon King of Annihilation’, His Majesty, Takifu Yoshua.”

As usual, it was an introduction that didn’t seem to be about me, but when they heard those words, the two remaining men glared at me in frustration.

“…barbarians who are not afraid of God. I will bury your arrogant words with my magic.”

The Emperor’s voice was dignified in its own way, but it was thin and weak. He had no subordinates, no weapons, and no strength, spirit, or magic.

“…God?”

Myrril tilted her head in wonder.

“Strange things have been happening here, and the name of a strange being has been mentioned. Unfortunately for us ‘demons,’ it’s like a distant relative. It’s never there when we need help, and it only comes when we don’t.”

“How insolent! God’s punishment will fall on you!”

“If that were the case, He would have descended upon the kingdom twenty-five years ago. He hasn’t descended on you yet, so your talk of divine punishment is just an illusion. Why don’t you face reality? Even if He did come down, we wouldn’t do anything about it. And we wouldn’t complain about it. Whether you grasp your destiny or let it slip away is ultimately up to you.”

His hateful gaze fixed on us.

“I don’t care what you think. We don’t care who you pray to or what you sacrifice. We kill our enemies, regardless of their beliefs, origin, or status. That’s all there is to it.”

“Blasphemers. What can you say to a barbaric tribe that has no faith…”

“Oh, that’s not true. We have firm faith.”

Myrril leans against me and lets out a chuckle.

“At least the only being I trust with my heart is here. I don’t need anything else.”

Myrril steps back, leaving the decision to me. I suppose I should get my hands dirty.

As I approach, the Emperor tries to stand before his throne. His legs are trembling, or perhaps they have withered, but he manages to pull himself up, holding on to the handle, and the old man desperately straightens his chest.

“I am the great…”

Whether it was to intimidate or to say his last words, I fired a shotgun pellet into the old man’s head.

“There’s no need for a long speech at this point.”

It must have been a layered magical barrier, but the old man managed to block the first shot, letting out a small scream and scattering magical light like sparks. The second shot hit the magic core attached to the handle of the throne, and blue-white light scattered in particles.

The third shot. As I approach, the sound of the pump-action loading echoes, and the Emperor looks around for a place to escape. He opens his mouth to shout something, but then he gasps for air.

“There’s no way this… can be allowed.”

“You made the wrong choice. From the beginning to the end. No matter what you say or do now, the result won’t change. It’s too late for you to repent. You and this country.”

The Emperor stares at the muzzle.

“It’s all over.”

The shot blows the old man’s head off, and blood and flesh fly around, staining the throne. The magic light doesn’t even blink anymore.

“Damn, in a place like this…”

The PMC commander struggled on the ground, desperately trying to get up. Strangely, he didn’t seem to be holding any weapons. Looking back, I saw a submachine gun lying by the throne. An H&K UMP. He must have put it down to hold his shield and then just left it there. It’s unfortunate, but I guess that’s what happens when you die.

I point my Browning Hi-Power at the middle-aged man who looks like an Anglo-Saxon. The man looks at me and curls his lips into a wry smile.

“To be sent to a stupid world and killed with a gun from my own country. What a poorly made farce…”

As I shot the man, who had ducked quickly in the head, the revolver he had just taken from his holster rolled away. It was a Smith & Wesson M36, with the metal on the rim exposed from heavy use. I don’t know what kind of career he had, but it seems he had made a living doing dangerous work for decades.

“I feel for you, Belgian. I never thought your end would be like this.”
