Chapter 346 – Fragments of the Wilderness
The next day, there were seven people in front of the hovercraft, in addition to myself and Myrril: the tiger-beastmen Koff and his parents, the dwarf Kaina and her parents, and her infant sister. Koff’s father had some experience as an adventurer in his youth, and it seems he wants to try again with the Sarz Adventurers’ Guild, which has relatively few dangerous quests. Kaina’s father plans to sign up with the Merchant’s Guild and work as a miner and field blacksmith.
“Myrril, what is a field blacksmith?”
“A blacksmith who doesn’t have his own workshop. If you include those who belong to large workshops or borrow a place through connections, there are more of them. I’m also a field blacksmith in the broadest sense.”
There is a shared workshop back in Casemaian, but for now, it is more of a freelance arrangement for a limited time.
“See you later, Demon King, Her Majesty the Queen.”
“Thank you for your help. I hope the next time we meet, it won’t be for a fight.”
“Shouldn’t we be the ones to say that?”
I wave to Ecla-san, Loringen-san, and the others who took the trouble to see us off and set the Griffon on its way to Sarz. We choose a flat route and head south for about an hour. At first, the refugees look uncomfortable with the roar of the engine and the strange feeling of the ride, but they soon get used to it and start snoring in the back.
“These people seem to be able to sleep pretty quickly.”
“The accepted wisdom is that when the going gets tough, you eat and sleep when you can. They seem to be having a hard time, so for now, as long as they’re safe, that’s the right decision.”
“I see. You can go to sleep, Myrril. There probably won’t be any problems on the way to Sarz.”
“…Yoshua?”
“N-no, that wasn’t a flag, was it?”
I hope so.”
The route from the capital in the Central Territory to Sarz on the western edge of the Southern Territory, passing through the Old Western Territory. The distance is a little over 400 kilometers, I think. I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think it’s more than 500 kilometers. The Griffon’s top speed is about 80 kilometers per hour, but I think 30 to 40 kilometers per hour is about the most we can do.
It will be difficult to get there before dark…”
“If we hurry, we might just make it. But there’s no need to hurry, right?”
“Well, let’s just go with the idea that we’ll stay somewhere overnight.”
Now that we’ve dealt with our biggest opponent, we’re not really on edge—or, to be more precise, we’re completely relaxed. If we keep going all day, we’re bound to have an accident somewhere.
When the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, it’s time for a short break and lunch. I park the Griffon in a hollow where we can avoid the wind and build a fire for cooking. Well, it’s a gasoline stove, but it’s the best I can do.
“A-ah…”
As I turned off the roaring engine of the Griffon, I heard a strange voice with a slight ringing in my ears. Actually, the main source of the noise was the propulsion fan blades, but that’s beside the point. It’s the anvil ear condition Myrril mentioned. The way Myrril put her hand on my ear and healed me with magic circulation.
I don’t know how to do it myself. As usual, I’m a demon king with no magic abilities other than “Market,” “Storage,” and “Teleport.” First of all, I don’t really understand what “Magic Power Circulation” is. I asked how to do it, but it didn’t work. Apparently, it’s a convenient technique that’s useful for things like strengthening the body and maintaining health. It seems that all demi-humans use it naturally or, rather, unconsciously. That’s cheating.
In fact, the refugees who rode with us―now immigrants to Sarz―helped prepare the meal, dividing the work as if there were no such thing as noise. I got the ingredients from Simon. I gave some to the Casemaian group, too, but the back of the Ural military truck had its limits, so we had a more generous share.
“Mao, what is this?”
“It’s a can of food. The contents are, um… corned beef. Do you know about it?”
Of course, they don’t. There are no edible cows here. I heard there was some kind of horned cattle in the Union Confederacy, but I don’t know about that either.
“I don’t know. Is it good?”
“Yes. You just chop up the potatoes and fry them together.”
In one big pot, we have hash browns, corned beef, and eggs. In the other big pot, we make stew. It’s a quick meal made with canned vegetables, root vegetables, and frozen meatballs, but it’s good enough for the trip. The real good food will be waiting for us in Sarz. There was some bread left over from the fresh food, so we’ll serve that as well.
The taste is probably not very good, but it looks luxurious and is very filling. The dishes were the same as usual, the marching dishes we had taken from the Kingdom Army. The table is a wooden box, which is a slight improvement over the cardboard box.
“”Can we eat? Can we eat?””
“Sure. Let’s eat.”
“”Nyahyaa~♪””
Everyone lined up and began to eat. Both adults and children were pleased with how delicious it was. Myrril also seemed satisfied as her mouth filled with food.
“What is this?”
“Hashed browns. It’s made by frying potato slices in a lot of oil. The thin fibers are corned beef. It’s salted beef.”
I’m not sure exactly how they make corned beef, but I think it’s something like that. The Japanese version had horse meat in it, but the one Simon got for me was from an overseas manufacturer called Libby’s, and it had a real beefy taste and was delicious.
“This is a dish I’ve never seen before. It’s quite delicious.”
“The thinly sliced potatoes were also served at the Wolf’s Tail Inn. However, the cooking method was more delicate.”
“Yes. When you’re traveling, this is about right. To keep moving, you need water and salt, and fat is the most important thing to endure the cold.”
I see. So, the need for calories is a pressing issue when traveling in winter. I hadn’t really thought about it before because we’re traveling by vehicle.
“If you can eat more, go ahead and have another helping.
“”Yay♪””
After eating, we’ll have some tea and maybe some sweets. Well, they’ll be cheap, ready-made ones.
After she finished eating, Myrril leaned against my back and looked up at the sky.
“Hmm… it’s a nice day today. It’s so peaceful that I’m starting to feel sleepy…?”
Myrril suddenly stood up in the middle of her words.
“Everyone, retreat! Hurry and get in the vehicle!”
Give me a break, Mir-neesan. We hurriedly got the refugees who were cleaning the dishes back into the Griffon.
“Don’t worry about your luggage! Get in and close the door!”
“Mao.”
“Hiheika?”
“There’s nothing to worry about. Right, Your Majesty the Demon King?”
“Ah, yes, I’ll do my best.”
But I can’t say for sure yet because I don’t know what’s coming. I’ll put away the luggage that was left outside the vehicle and get some weapons ready instead… but I can’t choose them without knowing what the opponent will be.
“Myrril, what’s coming?”
“There’s still some distance, but… that howling is probably from the forest wolves.”
