Chapter 347 – A Pack of Forest Wolf Even Though There Are No Forests
“…Forest wolf pack?”
I’ve never seen one. I’ve heard stories about them, but all I know is that they attack humans in packs and that the pack leader turns into a magical beast, becoming intelligent and large, about the size of a young snow-white wolf.
Moff, I wonder if he’s doing well in the pirate stronghold?
“Yoshua, this is no time to be distracted. It’s a pretty big pack, and…”
“Help me!!!”
“The merchant’s sled, loaded with goods, has been attacked.”
As I stood on the roof of the Griffon, I could see the horse-drawn sleigh coming toward us. It was about a quarter of a mile away, less than 400 meters. They were desperately trying to dump their load to lighten it and get away, but there was no way a two-horse sleigh could compete with the legs of a wolf. The wolves in the pack weren’t as big as Moff, but they were still pretty big. AKM could probably take them out, depending on where you hit them. The problem was stray bullets.
“Myrril.”
“Sorry, but I can’t use the Uji yet. I might be able to hit the wolves, but it’s too close to the sled. Can you teleport?”
“No, I want to try out my new rifle first.”
I take out my Winchester rifle and load it. Nine rounds of .30-30 Winchester ammo.
I lifted the lever and loaded the chamber, aiming roughly with the simple iron sights. I was more aware of the extension of the barrel than the sights themselves.
First, I aimed at the person furthest away from the horse-drawn sleigh. When I pulled the trigger, the recoil was milder than I expected. It was more intense than the AKM but not unbearable.
“You hit it.”
It’s a good gun. The trajectory is straight, and the initial velocity and power are high. The wolf that was hit was blown away as if it had been thrown into the air and stopped moving.
Then, the two wolves at the end of the line, which from our perspective, were close together. I let out a little breath, stopped it, and pulled the trigger.
“It’s a hit, they’re both dead.”
The copper-coated bullet head only penetrates soft targets. I can’t shoot the wolf in front of the sleigh.
I shoot the three wolves that are trying to jump on the sled from behind, one after the other. I missed one, but I’m beginning to get the hang of it. The lever action is good for someone with my skill level. The wolves leave the sled, wary of me.
“Hurry, over here!”
As the driver comes toward us, I reload and watch the pack’s movements.
“Thank goodness! I’ll certainly repay you for this…”
“We’ll talk later, get in the vehicle!”
Myrril pulled the bolt on the UZI while keeping a watchful eye on the surroundings. The two men who looked like merchants were hiding inside the Griffon, and the wolves were running around in circles, looking irritated. When I pointed my gun at them, they scattered and put some distance between them, so it looked like they were just trying to keep us at bay.
“Are they waiting for the leader of the pack?”
“That’s right. I can sense it, but I can’t see it.”
I switched to my AKM and focused my attention on the undulations where the beasts might be hiding. I looked at Myrril, and she nodded softly. I pulled the selector lever back a notch to disengage the safety and hesitated for a moment. I wasn’t sure I could hit anything after the first shot in full auto.
“Leave it to me. It’s my turn from here.”
A confident voice. Then, a huge gray body appeared from behind a small mound of snow.
You’ve got to be kidding me. Myrril-san, are you going to take that down with a pistol bullet?
Chapter 348 – Two People Staring at Each Other
The suggestion that it would be better to use a rifle with more power and accuracy was rejected out of hand. There are plenty of other things you can use, like an all-purpose machine gun, a light machine gun, a sniper rifle, or even the lever-action rifle I used.
I know she likes the UZI, but her opponent is a ten-foot carnivore, and according to the story, it’s a magical beast. There’s no need to challenge an opponent with high intelligence, attack power, and athletic ability with just a pistol bullet.
“Do you know why I didn’t stop you when you challenged it?”
Myrril asked me, looking at the leader of the forest pack.
“Uh, no… because I thought Myrril would somehow manage if it came to that?”
That’s what actually happened.
“Because I understood how you felt.”
“Huh?”
“Yoshua, you like that ‘mozer’ gun, don’t you? You wanted to prove its worth by killing that deer with it, didn’t you?” [T/n: Mauser.]
“Yes, but it was a failure.”
“You didn’t fail. You rose to the challenge and killed two deer with that gun.”
“Yeah, well, it was just a lucky shot at a fawn. But after that…”
“Well then. It was my mission to support your dream, and the goal was beautifully achieved, and the banquet that night was wonderful. Your beloved ‘Mozer’ proved its worth, and we created beautiful memories. Isn’t that enough?”
“Well, um… yeah, I guess so.”
If you only look at the results.
“It’s the same.”
Myrril smiles softly. The leader of the wolf pack, who is watching us and flexing all its muscles, is ready to pounce, and it’s only a matter of timing.
“I love you. I also love the ‘Star’ and ‘Uji’ you gave me. I want to prove the value of those things. I want to prove that I can do this, that I can win.”
So says Myrril, puffing out her chest. She holds the UZI in her right hand and touches the Star automatic pistol in its holster with her left hand as if caressing it.
“This is good. The only ones I can trust with my life are these guys you gave me.”
It was a genuine declaration of love. Although it felt a bit misleading to say it was directed at me.
“What, there’s no problem. If it comes to that, I’ll use my ‘Arasukan’ amulet.” [T/n: Alaskan].
And with that, Myrril jumps down onto the snowy plain. Without a moment’s pause, the small body begins to run, heading straight for the leader of the forest wolf pack.
“If the distance isn’t enough, I’ll just get closer.”
Myrril must be thinking that right now.
“Visible, up to a distance.”
She’s crazy. Everyone would think that. Even I can’t help but think that somewhere in my heart. Normally, it would be out of the question to throw away one’s advantage in distance and height like that. But…
Myrril, who values rationality, does not take unnecessary risks. She only talks about what she can do, and she always does what she says. You could say that she’s already crazy because she doesn’t think that charging into a wolf many times her size is an unnecessary risk, but that’s it.
The leader was taken by surprise by the unexpected behavior of its opponent, whom it had thought to be nothing more than bait, but it quickly jumped out of the way.
As they passed each other, the first shot was fired. It seemed to understand the weapon that killed its subordinates, and while moving at high speed, it twisted its body to avoid the first shot. It tried to step in and bite Myrril, but the dwarf shooter used the locked jaws as a springboard and jumped to the enemy’s back.
Two more shots in the air. The leader jumps aside to avoid them. Then, it dodged two more shots by stepping back, and the leader of the forest wolves let out a roar of anger and frustration.
“Oooohhhhh…””
“Hiheika!”
Shouting and cheering erupt from inside the Griffon.
I shoot and kill the forest wolves one by one with my AKM as they try to get behind Myrril to support and control her. I trusted her and left it to her. I won’t let anyone interfere with this fight.
“Guooooooo…!”
The leader takes a low posture and rushes forward, swinging its body finely from side to side as if bouncing snow off the ground. Just before its huge body intersected with Myrril’s, it moved in an unnatural manner. I wondered if it had lost sight of her or was trying to finish her off by rolling around to avoid her, but the wolf’s movements were definitely strange. It shook its head, stumbling and twisting, trying to shake something off.
“…Hey, you’ve got to be kidding me.”
Myrril, who had emerged from the snow cloud, held the forest wolf’s ear in one hand. Her left hand held the ear, and her right hand held the submachine gun. The wolf couldn’t resist making a big jump, and above its head was a demigod pointing a gun at it, not moving an inch.
“Ooooooh!”
She smiled, looking almost friendly, and whispered in the wolf’s ear, a voice I could also hear.
“…I’ve got you.”
A bullet pierced the wolf’s eye, which was wide with fear, and it twitched in the air. Before it could land, her left hand, which had been raised to her neck, flashed and snapped the wolf’s neck.
That’s scary…! I said in my mind.
When she turned around, breathing a sigh of relief, her face had returned to its usual innocent and friendly expression.
“How about that! I won, Yoshua♪”
“Congratulashyonn.”
…I bit my tongue.
