Chapter 375 – The Shortest Treasure Hunt

Myrril and I went down to the basement of the mansion to collect the things Mead had left behind. First, I checked the dollar bills, but according to Mead, something seems to be buried there.

“What do you mean, seems to be?”

“Sorry, I don’t remember. My memory is a little hazy. I think it was something important…”

He’s a pretty unreliable ghost.

Only the five members of Battle Cry will accompany us. We’ll also ask the three members of the Surz who were in the entrance hall to come to the study and keep an eye on the attackers, including Yeld.

“Demon King, two people are dying.”

Lui points to the attackers. I don’t know which two they are, but they’re all tied up and lying there, exhausted and unable to move. Lui cast a minor healing spell on them earlier, so if they die here, it’ll be from blood loss or hypothermia. I look at Mead to see if he needs anything.

“Don’t worry, it’s just like that. Even if they die, no one will be bothered.”

I tell the Surz what Mead said.

“As long as you keep an eye on them so they don’t run away, that’s all we need. We’ll take responsibility.”

It seems that Mead also has a limited range of movement and can’t go underground, so he’s decided to wait in the study with Yeld and the Surz. It seems the others can’t see him.

“What kind of restrictions?”

“Well, for starters, I can’t leave the mansion. Even within the grounds, I can’t go outside. The basement is also protected by a magic circle to maintain the condition of the food and keep out pests…”

It seems that Mead, now a ghost, is blocked by the magic circle he has set up. So, ghosts are treated as pests in terms of magic effects? That’s terrible.

“And the entrance hall is bad, too. You can see the smoke from the weird exorcism incense that’s been burning.”

The guards at the Surz were burning incense that glowed pale blue. That’s no good either. He really does resemble a bug.

“Yoshua, what is in the basement? I heard it was something only you could handle, but that doesn’t make it any clearer.”

“He said it was a currency from my former world. It can’t be exchanged or redeemed here.”

“Even so, if it’s given to the right person, it will be put to good use. I see. If Mead chose this method on purpose, I think it’s quite something…”

When Myrril looks at Mead on the ceiling, Mead looks away. I’m sure she can’t see him, but does she feel his presence?

“It just came out that way. When I hid it, I didn’t think I was going to die.”

Mead shrugs resignedly. Looking at the current situation, it doesn’t seem like the result of careful preparation.

After confirming that the attackers are restrained, we leave the study.

“Takifu-san, this way.”

The house was so big that we didn’t know where to go, so the half-elf mage, Eino-san, led the way. We went down a wide, ornate staircase that was used to move between living quarters and entered the dining room. There was a locked door next to the kitchen at the back, and we opened it and went down a small staircase to the basement. Once down, I saw a row of large and small barrels. Next to the barrels that looked like wine and distilled liquor was the barrel of copper coins I had given them. Of course, they can’t pay for the mansion with such small coins, nor can they spend them easily.

“I hear this is the basement storage room.”

Eino-san points to the double doors at the end of the underground passage. Judging by the fact that they are slightly open, it seems that they are not locked.

“We haven’t had a chance to use it yet, so we don’t know what’s inside. It could be full of cobwebs and spiders.”

“Don’t worry. Mead said there is a magic circle that keeps insects and dirt away.”

I was skeptical about its effectiveness, but when we entered the warehouse, there was no dirt or cobwebs, even though it had been empty for several years. There was also no smell of dust or mold. I thought that at least the caretaker must have come to check on it, but according to Mead, it had been unoccupied for a long time. Preserving conditions with magic? It’s more advanced than science and technology.

Eino-san opens the door and touches the stone on the wall next to it. Nothing happens.

“Huh? That’s strange. There should be a magic stone lamp buried here as well.”

The stone she touched earlier is like a switch panel that reacts to magic power. It’s unclear whether it’s due to age or a problem.

“Please use this.”

I take out a flashlight and hand it to Eino-san. It’s a large flashlight with a tonfa handle that can also be used as a weapon. I also took out another one for myself. I don’t think I’ll need it as a weapon, but the only other light I have is the powerful Share Fire.

“Takifu-san, is this a magic tool?”

“It doesn’t use magic power, but it’s something like that.”

When I shine my light inside the underground storehouse, I saw that it was almost empty. There were some shelves at the far end and some crates stacked on top of them, but the lids were open, and the contents were empty.

“I heard that there was a wall on the north side. Colon, which way is north?”

“It’s to the right. Takifu, can you shine a light over there?”

Colon, a half-dwarf skilled at picking locks and disarming traps, is in charge of finding the buried treasure—which is actually dollars. He touches the wall with his hand and examines it with a familiar look.

“This is it. The back is hollow.”

I thought we’d have to knock the wall down, but Colon quickly found a way to open the hidden door. After unlocking a lock hidden by a cupboard and a crate, the north wall opened up to reveal a room about the size of a tatami mat. Inside are two boxes with handles like a briefcase.

“What? That’s too small to be a treasure.”

If this were a gold-standard society, that’s the impression you’d get.

The boxes weren’t locked, and when you turned the knobs on either side of the handles, they opened instantly when they saw the tightly packed bundles of hundred-dollar bills; Myrril, Eino-san, and Colon tilted their heads in wonder.

“That’s quite an elaborate trick. Is that what it is?”

“Yes, it’s made of metal. These are the bills I was talking about earlier – paper money.”

I think I heard that the material used for dollar bills is not paper.

“Is this money? Hey, Takifu, aren’t you being fooled?”

The three members of the Battle Cry physical group, Tig, Louis, and McCain, who were following us from behind, were unusually quiet. I think it was because they were on high alert.

“No, I think it’s probably okay. I remember seeing that bill where I was before.”

Unfortunately, I’ve never held or used a dollar bill. And I don’t get to see a hundred-dollar bill very often.

“I think we can trust what Mead says for now.”

“That’s what I don’t understand. Is that squeaking and crunching really Mead?”

“Oh, you can’t see him?”

“I can feel something strange. I understand what you say, Takifu, and I trust what you say, but I can’t say more than that I don’t know the truth.”

Aside from McCain, who answers calmly, Tig and Louis seem to be sensitive to ghosts. It’s not that they’re afraid of them, but more like they’re sensitive to people who don’t die when they’re hit. It’s like the exact opposite of the theory-based person who hates people they can’t communicate with.

“Even if that thing isn’t a treasure, I won’t lose anything. What I can’t understand is why Mead is restricted to this place.”

I open the other box and tilt my head this time as well. What the hell is this?

“Well, let’s go back to the study. I have some questions for Mead… and maybe Lui, too.”
