Chapter 376 – Tied Up

When we returned to the study with the wooden box, the seven men from Surz were moving about in a frenzy.

From the voices I could hear, it seemed that one of the Yeld mercenaries who had been restrained had gone into cardiac arrest. The mage, Lui, was trying to perform life-saving measures. When I looked over, Myrril nodded slightly and started moving in the opposite direction of me.

“Wait, I’m sorry, but I’ll take care of this.”

In the middle of the room, a man with his back turned is convulsing. Behind the Surz, who have gathered to subdue him, one of the mercenaries stands up, brandishing what looks like a small knife he has hidden. He must have used it to cut the ropes that bound him. He has chosen a position out of sight of the people from the Battle Cry. His thinking, movement, and coordination are not bad.

“…Kyuu”

The man had barely taken a step when he was shot through the chest with a Sturm Ruger .22 Long Rifle bullet and fell to the ground. Had it been a Myrril .45 ACP, blood and other things would have splattered all over the room. The fact that I saw the expensive-looking carpet and made that judgment just before the shot shows how poor I am.

“I’ll kill you whenever you want, but I can’t stand to dirty this new house.”

Yeld and the mercenaries seem to have finally noticed my presence.

“Demon, king…”

“Raise your hand if you want to die. I’ll throw you out the window.”

They must have planned to attack at the same time. The other mercenary was still kneeling on the ground, his bonds still untied. Myrril grabbed the man who had begun to move, opened the window that led to the terrace, and threw him over the railing.

The man who fell from the third floor let out a small cry, but the sound of him hitting something hard was soon followed by silence outside.

“The snow under the eaves seems to be frozen.”

Yeld looks at me with a hateful expression, while Myrril’s voice is matter-of-fact. As Mead had suspected, the man who died a moment ago was only acting.

The man who had been suffering convulsions jumps up and tries to reach for Colon’s knife, but Tig twists his neck.

Our eyes met there, and Tig looked at me with a face that said, “Oh, was that bad?” I thought to myself, “Don’t say that after you’ve killed someone,” but I shook my head with a wry smile, thinking there was nothing wrong with it.

“You are of no further use to me. I had some questions I wanted to ask, but they were only of personal interest, so it doesn’t matter.”

Louis beats to death the mercenary who tries to escape, and Colon’s throwing knife sticks into the back of the other. The bodies of the five killed are stored. The others are Yeld and the two mages.

One of them pretends to fall down in the middle of the chaotic battle and reaches for the magic staff. I shoot through the hand and the staff with the Sturm Ruger.

“Gaaahh!”

Even though it was a small, weak .22 caliber bullet, it shattered his hand, and he was unable to hold on to his staff. I shot the man in the face as he shouted the incantation with his last ounce of strength. The other mage tried to get up in a flash, but he collapsed under the attack magic that Eino-san unleashed on him like a bolt of lightning. Judging by the smoke rising from his hair, it appears that it was a level that burned his brain.

Only Yeld remains. Realizing that he has no chance of winning, he doesn’t even try to move, even though he is the ringleader.

“…Don’t be ridiculous… Demon King…!”

“Who’s being ridiculous, Yeld?”

“We were asked by the spirit of Mead to collect the money. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Since he didn’t seem to believe me, I placed the wooden box in front of Yeld and opened the lid. Isolated and unable to move, the knight-turned-petty-official looked at the tightly packed banknotes with eyes that looked like he was looking at something dirty.

“The currency of the other world? Who would believe such a tall tale?”

“Did you hear that from Mead? Unfortunately, it’s true. This piece of paper is worth more than gold. I’m the only one who can exchange it for cash, though.”

I opened the other wooden box and showed it to Lui and the others.

“Here’s another thing Mead kept carefully hidden. Do you recognize it?”

In the box was a polished dagger. A single stone, like a magic stone, was embedded in the hilt and handle. Even though it must have been dormant in that hidden room for a long time, a faint magical light shone from the stone, sparkling.

When they saw it, Lui and the others looked frustrated, sad, and wistful, and groaned.

“Why did Mead-sama… leave this behind?”

After hearing the story from Lui and Mead, I had thought that maybe it wasn’t resentment or lingering feelings that had bound him but some other kind of magical restraint.

But this was a bit unexpected.

“Lui, is this a magic sword?”

“…The ritual is set, but the purpose is different. This is the ‘Sword of the Blood Oath.’ It is a symbol of our loyalty and worship, a pledge that we, the Surz Clan, will give everything… to support and protect…”

I never thought that what bound Mead was love and respect.
