Chapter 386 – Encounters at Sea
As the huge propulsion fan blades began to spin with a roar, the Marquis and the Surz, who were riding it for the first time, began to move back and forth in fear, curiosity, and confusion.
“I had completely forgotten, but is Mead all right?”
“I think so.”
The wooden box containing the “Blood Oath Sword” was fastened to the seat behind the cockpit, serving as a makeshift shrine.
Mead’s spirit sits listlessly on the box, but no one else can see it. The scroll of magical visualization that Marquis Yerkel gave me is stored away because it constantly consumes magic energy while it’s displayed―and it glitters, so it’s a distraction while I’m driving―anyway, I can see Mead’s form.
“Are you feeling sick or something?”
I turn to check on Mead. I don’t know if ghosts have feelings or not.
“I’m fine so far. To be honest, I’m a little excited about going out for the first time in a while.”
He says with a hint of self-derision and laughs. So ghosts have feelings, after all. I’m sure Myrril can’t see him, but she seems to sense his presence and looks at me suspiciously from behind.
“What’s he saying?”
“Oh, he says he’s glad to be going out.”
“I see. So it wasn’t lingering feelings or attachment that kept Mead tied up in the mansion; it was that dagger.”
To be precise, it was more Surz’s love and respect than a dagger, but I remained silent.
As we began to move, Marquis Yerkel came up behind the cockpit. Everyone wants to look out the front window at the scenery first.
“This is really fast. Yoshua-dono, which is faster, this or the bus I rode in before?”
“I think they’re about the same speed. It’s about twice as fast as a horse running at full speed, but the conditions are easier, so you can go faster than the bus.”
“Conditions?”
The hovercraft can only increase its speed on level ground. There are no large settlements around Lafan, but there are bumps and obstacles. After the harsh winter, the number of people and horses coming and going seems to be increasing, so we have to be careful. For now, we quickly head out to sea. As the coastline comes into view, Marquis Yerkel looks a little scared.
“…No way, wait a minute…”
“It’s okay.”
As the Griffon approached the water’s surface from the hillside, it kicked up the waves and began to move forward.
“”Ohhhhhh…””
A chorus of mixed sounds of surprise, confusion, and admiration came from the aft compartment.
“It can also be used as a ship?”
“I think it’s more accurate to say it’s a ship. It can only run on land if the ground is flat.”
We continued out to a few hundred meters off the coast, then turned north and increased our speed. There were no obstacles in sight, so we continued at cruising speed until nightfall, aiming for our destination. It was a clear day, and although there was some wind, the waves were not too high.
“We plan to go ashore and set up camp in the evening, but I think we can make it to the northern tip of the Republic.”
“It’s supposed to be almost three hundred miles, but you want to do that in one day?”
It’s about 500 kilometers. Including stops it should take a little over seven hours. I nodded and suddenly realized something strange.
“Is this effect the result of Marquis’ magic?”
“Effect?”
Even though the wind is blowing, there is no sense of the ship being blown away. There is a slight calm around the Griffon. There are no splashes, and the surface of the sea is flat and calm. When I explained this, the Marquis laughed.
“Ah, it’s me. I wasn’t aware of it, but maybe it’s a habit I’ve picked up.”
Wind and water magic are the strengths of the elves, and the same goes for the quarter-elven Marquis Yerkel, whose unconsciousness creates a kind of light barrier around her. It seems to affect the Griffon’s hull as well.
“It’s convenient, isn’t it? The fire magic of our dwarves is only good for forging and rough work.”
“That was a great help. Besides, wherever we go, we’re almost always met with rough situations.”
“You guys never change.”
“It’s not like we like it.”
I laughed, although it was half a lie.
After sailing for about two hours, the passengers all seemed to have settled in and relaxed, with half of them falling asleep in their seats. These people can sleep just about anywhere. They’re like office workers who live in the city.
“Myrril too…”
I almost said, “I’ll wake you up if anything happens, so go to sleep,” but then I lowered my voice. It seemed that Nojaloli-san was tired, too, as she was already asleep in the passenger seat. Her sleeping face still looked young and cute.
We’ll land somewhere soon and have lunch. I suddenly noticed that the communication device on the console was glowing. It seemed that the headset was plugged in, so there was no sound coming out. I put it on my head while piloting the ship and pressed the talk button.
“Yes, what is it?”
“Oh, it’s rare that Yoshua answers. We’re in the air; can you see us?”
Rinko’s voice made me look out the front window, but I couldn’t see anything. I don’t even know what kind of vehicle she’s in. I think I could see a big airship, but it would be hard for me to see a small plane flying at such a high altitude.
“No, I don’t know. Is there a problem?”
“Huh? Yoshua, I thought your group was heading north because you had an understanding of the situation?”
“We are on a trip to visit the ethnic minorities of the Empire that we met when we attacked the Imperial Capital.”
“Huh… that’s nice. It’s like the Discovery Channel♪”
I told her to get to the point and stop talking nonsense. People like this genius type tend to be a bit natural. As I looked around, a biplane crossed the sky. Is it trying to get us to check it out? It lowers its altitude and makes a smooth arc. It’s longer and smaller than the one I saw before, and it’s faster and more maneuverable. They’ve developed a new model again, haven’t they?
The air sacs and the nacelle are both a blue-gray color that blends in with the sky. I wouldn’t have noticed it if she hadn’t told me to look.
“It’s the port of the Imperial Capital that was taken by the Republic, but there’s a riot going on there.”
“Huh?”
“The capital was destroyed by the Demon King, so things are already pretty chaotic in the Imperial Capital, but the riot is most intense within the walls of the port. Even from the air, you can see a lot of magical light and explosions, so it looks like artillery and mages have joined in.”
“Eeehhh…”
“In a country that faces the sea, the port is where money and goods accumulate, so interests are concentrated there. If the capital of a country surrounded by hostile countries falls, there is no future, and if you escape from the sea with the goods you have taken, you get two benefits at once, right?”
Even if you say “right,” I don’t think there’s anywhere for the people of the Empire to escape to within the distance they can travel in the ships they’ve taken, but I wonder if they’re thinking that far ahead. It’s not my problem, so I don’t care.
“What are you going to do?”
“Hmm… to be honest, I have no plan. I wonder what I should do.”
I don’t care what happens to the Empire, so I’d like to change my destination if possible. It seems like the Surz village isn’t too far from this port city.
“I understand the situation, but why did Rinko and the others come on this business trip?”
“To gather information and provide air support for the Demon King.”
“Yes, that’s fine. What’s the real reason?”
The high school girl mad scientist, once a clumsy saint and now known as the Demon of the Empire, stopped her bad acting and giggled.
“I’ll leave the final decision to Yoshua, but… isn’t this a chance? Casemaian will get the sea.”
