Chapter 412 – Fragments of a Dream

When I woke up, they were all gone.

The Casemaians, the Surz, and the high-ranking people of the Republic, including Ecla-san and Marquis Yerkel of the Kingdom. Even Myrril, who had promised to stay with me, was nowhere to be seen.

Needless to say, the representatives of Efan Harbor Fortress are nowhere to be seen. I’m all alone, at a complete loss, in the middle of a vast, flat snowfield as far as the eye can see.

“What is this, where has everyone gone?”

But considering the situation, I’m the one who’s lost. So, to be precise, the question is where I’ve come to. I can’t remember at all.

After the guardian deity of Surz, Mead was sent to the afterlife, Myrril-san’s final comment was a toast to send off the guests cheerfully while holding back tears…

“I think we did it…”

That’s right, I’ve had quite a few drinks since then. Even though I’m not good with alcohol.

“I’m sure everyone is worried about me. I’d better come back soon…”

I don’t even know where I am. Which way should I go? If I were near the sea, I could probably walk along the coast, but I can’t see the horizon from here. I can’t see any mountains either, which I would expect to see in the northern part of the Republic. I thought I could check the situation by going up to a high place with a good view.

It’s so flat that it feels strange. Or rather, why didn’t I notice that I was lying in a field of snow and wasn’t cold? There was no sound, no birds singing, not even a breeze.

When I bent down and touched the ground at my feet, it was something white that wasn’t even cold. The sky I looked up to was just a faint blue-white sphere, with not even a cloud or a sun in sight.

“What is this place?”

Could it be that I’ve died again? Am I about to be transported to another world? A sudden sense of urgency grips my insides.

I don’t want this. I can’t bear to be alone again.

“Myrril!”

No matter how much I ran, the scenery didn’t change at all, and even if I used teleportation to escape, there was nothing but the eternal white ground and pale blue sky.

“No way.”

A shadow fell in front of me as I fell to my hands and knees in despair. When I looked up, I saw a familiar face staring back at me.

“Yoshiaki.”

The friendly voice that had once called to me. The accent that made the end of the sentence seem to dance, and the tilt of the head.

“Grandma…?”

Grandma from Koriyama stood with her hands on her hips. This was the posture she always used when she gently lectured me for doing something wrong.

Grandma laughed confusedly and shook her head as she looked at me.

“What’s the matter, you’re all upset by yourself?”

“Eh, ahh… Hmm?”

Hearing my grandmother’s dialect after such a long time, I didn’t understand what she was saying for a moment.

That’s right. Even when I was a child, the first day I went to visit her was like that. From the next day or so, I got used to the rhythm and the intonation and could sort of understand it.

“You can’t do that.”

I understood what she meant, including the gestures, but it seemed like she came out because she couldn’t bear to see me lost here.

I don’t know where she came from or where I am. Probably not even she knows.

“Go on now. Your sweet girl is waiting for you, right?”

“Yes, but what about you?”

“It’s okay. I can’t go with you.”

“Just me?”

“That’s right.”

Grandma points to the end of the white ground and tells me to go back to where I was.

I started to move forward as I was told, but then I turned around.

“Hey, Grandma. I…”

Somehow, I felt that this reunion had some kind of meaning. It wasn’t just a dream or a near-death experience.

I felt that this was a turning point.

“I finally got what I wanted. Happiness. A reason to live and someone important to be with forever.”

Grandma nodded, looking happy. I don’t know if she understood. I wonder if she always listened to my stories with a smile like that.

When I grew up, I finally understood how she felt. I think it doesn’t matter what the conversation is about as long as the grandchild is happy.

“…I wish I could have met you again, Grandma.”

Hearing this, Grandma smiled happily.

“Thank you, Yoshiaki. You…”

Light surrounds me. Grandma’s figure flickers and disappears. At the end, I hear a voice.

“You’ve really grown up.”
