Chapter 413 – And the Two of Us Will Be Together Forever
Yes, that’s right. Yes, I knew that.
“Yoshua, why do you have such a strange face?”
“Strange? Of course I’m making a funny face. I can’t help it if I look like this.”
The village of Surz, which served as an import/export gateway for the port fortress of Efan and the city of Casemaian, as well as a de facto middleman for multilateral trade, was developing at a frightening pace. Trade goods were pouring into the newly built warehouse, and there were already requests for additional construction―from the Republic Council for some reason. Even though, according to international law, they are only neighboring countries. We’ve also received an ‘unofficial request’ from McKin-shi and Lady Ecla, asking for something like a storage facility to rent.
“If the country’s leaders say it directly, it’s not unofficial…”
“Loringen-dono and Lord McKin will be running a regular service between the village of Surz and the city of Hagwai. It’s the ‘Circulating Demon King Service’ that Loringen-dono mentioned earlier, you know.”
“Eh?”
“As expected, they can’t just use another country’s flag, so they seem to have made it their own Sea Monster Octopus Seal.”
As usual, the Southern Territories native, who is straightforward in his feelings, good or bad, is in business as usual.
However, the hustle and bustle of bringing in, taking out, and negotiating will be over for today. Starting tomorrow, there will be no sign of life around here for a while.
“Can you do this for me?”
Myrril handed me the polished UZI. She also gave me the extra magazines in the carrying case and the boxed .45 ACP.
“This is a treasure given to me by Yoshua. I can only entrust it to you.”
I place the local revolver in the chest-mounted holster on the hand that holds the gun I just received. Finally, I pulled the M1911 copy out of the holster, checked the chamber, and then offered it to her with the holster still attached.
With a troubled expression, Myrril blushes and whispers to me, “Are you sad or embarrassed?”
“It feels like I’ve been stripped naked.”
I guess so. If it’s you, Loli-sensei, you could probably take out a medium-sized magical beast with your fists alone.
“Gheh.”
As expected, my thoughts seem to be completely transparent, and I writhe in agony as she pokes me in the side with her fingertip.
“Well, goodbye then.”
“Yeah.”
Without looking back, she disappears into the teleportation circle.
◇ ◇
“Oh, what’s wrong, Yoshua?”
Yadar and Minya call to me as I stand alone. A few days ago, they had accompanied me to the airship to help load the equipment, but they had stayed behind in the village of Surz. What are they doing?
“You look even more depressed than usual.”
“Yes, you look strange.”
“Guys, how do you say…?”
“Hmm?”
“Myrril said the same thing to me, but there’s something about you that makes you want to use more careful expressions.”
“Oh, then… ‘You’re making a really ugly face.'”
“You’re getting worse!”
Yadar laughed carelessly, and she and Minya poked me from both sides. I asked them if they wanted something from me, but they just brushed me off.
“So how do you feel now? You’re not going to run away now that you’ve come this far, are you?”
“Yeah, yeah. It feels really weird.”
“Hmm?”
“It feels like I left half of myself somewhere.”
They both shook their heads in disbelief at my words.
“Don’t be so smitten!”
“It’s not that. Since the day I was summoned to this world, we’ve always been together.”
“Ah.”
“So it’s even harder than I thought.”
“That’s why! You’re spreading a sweet atmosphere!”
The communicator beeps, and Minya has a brief conversation on the headset.
“Yadar, time. We’re taking the accused away.”
“Stop it, Minya, when you say it with a straight face, it’s hard to tell if you’re joking or not.”
Yadar and Minya take my arms and place me in the teleportation magic circle.
“See you, Yoshua.”
“Have a death without regrets.”
“So stop making that face.”
After the teleportation, when my vision returned to normal, I saw a huge crowd of excited spectators lined up around me. Their shouts, screams, and cheers mingled with the sound of flutes and drums. It was like a big game in a football stadium.
The situation was strange in many ways, but if this was the way things were done in this world, I had no choice but to obey. I pushed my way through the crowd and made my way to the stairs in front of me. This was the latest equipment that hadn’t been around when I was there. A magical device, an escalator that climbs from the plains of Casemaian to the heights, drawing a gentle slope. The difference in height and the design make it look like a stairway to heaven.
“We have been waiting for you, Your Majesty.”
Standing at the entrance to the escalator are seven elves in guard-like uniforms. They are the heroes of the city walls who killed fourteen winged dragons in the war with the kingdom.
“Thank you.”
When I reached the front of the escalator, the elves stood at attention with their weapons on their shoulders, clearing a path for me.
“May the spirits bless you.”
The burly Kemich said, grinning.
I nodded and stepped onto the escalator. The steps began to move quietly and smoothly, increasing in height as they moved toward the center of Casemaian, where the city walls once stood. Cheers and music swept over the crowd like a wave, and colorful confetti danced through the air. The sun was shining gently, even though it was a little early for spring, and the remaining snow sparkled on the edges of this magical city.
The streets, with their uniform use of materials and color schemes, looked breathtakingly beautiful from above. I could now strongly feel that the things we had risked our lives to protect were worth this much… and more.
“Come, Your Majesty.”
Before I knew it, I had reached the bottom of the escalator. As I was about to step out, I froze.
The city walls had been removed, and the grass and flowers were in full bloom on the hilltop, which had become a vast park with huge trees that produced water.
In the center of the park is an auditorium that looks like a temple. The Casemaians who stood on both sides of the path led me to the lecture hall. Each time I visited, I was showered with blessings and a shower of flowers over my head. Some of the faces I recognized, some I didn’t. If you include the people who watched over me in the square, the number seemed to easily exceed ten thousand.
“This is the new Case-maian…”
The women who had been strewing flowers on the path stepped aside. I could see Myrill, dressed in a white dress, standing in front of the auditorium. At her side were the dwarf chief, Heimann-jiisan, and the fox beastman, Merel. I wonder if they’re playing the roles of the bride’s attendants and the priest? I don’t know the customs here, but for some reason, it’s not customary to rehearse beforehand.
“What is the point of following rules made by others?”
When I asked him about the arrangements for the day, Heimann-jiisan replied with a puffed chest.
“Do what you want. Everyone will get to know the man called Yoshua by watching you.”
“That’s not right…”
Every time I took a step forward, the ring began to spit out blue-white particles that sparkled. I don’t know if I was excited or not, but I couldn’t stop it. The scattered flower petals were lifted into the air, spread across the sky, and fell down, sparkling as they danced.
It’s like the old man who made flowers bloom with electricity. As I approached the auditorium, the cheering became louder. When I looked up, I saw a pale pink band of light coloring the sky, which was full of particles of light, like an aurora borealis.
I stood in front of Myrill under the shining sky. I wondered what I was supposed to do here, what I was supposed to show and tell the people who had gathered. Nothing came to mind.
“Myrill.”
When I called out to her, my other half smiled softly.
If she were here, nothing would be impossible. There would be no hesitation, no fear.
Surely, it would all start again from here. A new journey. A new battle.
We would go on together. Endlessly.
Forever.
