Chapter 549: The Golden Array that reversed Destruction?
With the break of dawn, the chirping of birds whistled from the trees that were left untouched from the catastrophic battle between the Rising Smoke and the Mountain Sieger - their chirpings were like an opening choir.
Everyone who was involved in the incident was either rushed immediately to a medical facility by the academy staff or left, no longer wanting to stay in a place where their lives were so recently threatened.
But. There were always exceptions.
Some people decided to stay back at the academy, ogling at the newly repaired buildings that were reconstructed with the help of the golden runic array.
What was that phenomenon, you may ask? The golden runic array was called—
"[The Hidden Array of the Golden Hour]..." Kuro muttered quietly as he climbed up the stairs to the surface, "Not once did I imagine that I would be able to partially witness it in action during my time here..."
The Hidden Array of the Golden Hour was a powerful, mystical formation created by the first headmaster of the academy. Back when the academy was first built, it would constantly be destroyed time and time again - even with the help of the finest mages.
So, when they had relocated to this urban area, he had erected an array of time that would repair all the damages caused to the academy, but only to inanimate objects. This was an array that could only be activated 3 times per year, needing to recharge by absorbing the ambient mana.
If one had to describe what an array was, it would commonly be referred to as an enchantment that was applied to reality and the world itself. This method was able to construct the realm in which the Louis Mana Academy was currently hidden.
Only those well-versed in the language of enchantments and beloved by mana can truly pull off this feat.
Lillian marvelled at the buildings before turning to the Gardener, watching as he caressed the side of a wall, trying to discover any flaws or differences with it.
"It’s the same..." He muttered quietly.
They truly hadn’t changed a bit. The dust on the window sills, the rubbish in the bins, and even the webs without their spider had been recovered - anything that wasn’t breathing was returned to their rightful place.
’That’s so cool...’ Lillian thought.
She then tried to locate Takuro, the old man, amongst the crowd that still remained here, but found her to be non-existent. He was gone.
Lillian’s face twitched, remembering back to the countless people she saved in this mess while he was around to witness it.
She then thought, ’What? No coin?’
Sighing, Lillian shrugged. It’s not like she should feel disappointed that she managed to save people. It’ll go towards her reputation, after all.
Pulling out her phone, Lillian tried to turn it on. But then found it to be dead.
’It’s dead...? Since when?! Did I not charge it on the train?’
Lillian pushed the power button several times in rapid succession, expecting it to turn on any moment, but then stopped soon after.
Wasn’t this the definition of insanity?
She sighed deeply. ’Great... Who knows how long it’s been dead for...’ Lillian frowned, visibly frustrated.
What if Marionette had called her, but had no way of picking it up because her phone was dead?
Subtly distressed, Lillian began to rummage through her spatial ring with dramatic movements - hoping to find somewhere she could charge her phone; she might need to invest in a powerbank...
While Lillian was doing this, the Gardener felt his pocket buzz.
Buzz. Buzz. Buzz.
"Hm?"
Pulling out his phone, he went silent as the stared at the caller’s name. If one were to be able to get a glimpse under his mask, they would find his eyebrow raised high.
Accepting the call, he placed his phone to his ear and began to talk.
"What is the purpose of your call, Niece? Yes, I am fine, how about you? Have you been taking your medications?"
After a short chat of formal pleasantries with the person on the phone, the Gardener’s eyebrow raised again at what he heard next.
"Hm? Attendant? Have you decided which of the few you would like to compete for the role yet—... Find?" The Gardener, having been shortly cut off mid-speech, decided to look past it as he snuck Lillian a brief glance.
"How fortunate, that girl is actually with me as you speak—" He then paused, being cut off again, but this time, "Watch your tone... I didn’t do anything to your lover."
"Then, do explain why she is in such close proximity to you. In fact, you might as well explain the purpose of why you’re even anywhere near her..." Marionette hissed through the phone, knowing full well what her uncle was like. "Aren’t you supposed to be at the Dragon’s Den?"
Her uncle was a man who, once interested in a creature’s anatomy, would try to dissect and concoct a medicinal substance from their remains. And with the fact that he was aware that Lillian looked normal in her eyes from what she said, she felt far more cautious about him.
"I was and still am, kind of. An outbreak had occurred, which led to the night ending. Rest assured, your lover is still alive with all of their limbs intact thanks to me. So, show your uncle some respect.
"Now then, what’s this about making her your attendant?"

Overseeing the crowd of people below, a man stood at the peak of a tall building that was several hundred feet above the ground. His body was small, old, and frail-looking.
"Hm... A lot of them managed to survive this..." The elder muttered, stroking his chin as he looked down with blindfolded eyes - It was Takuro.
The corners of the elder’s lips curled upwards as he settled his gaze on Lillian secretly, fidgeting with a coin hidden inside his pocket, "Almost, little girl... You almost earned yourself another contract."
After muttering that, he took a single step off the edge of the building he was standing on.
