Chapter 616: Some people just can’t handle setbacks?
"WHAT!? FIVE MILLION?!"
"Y-yes, sir..."
Sitting behind a desk was a tall, white-suited man in a large, lavish office; behind him were two black-suited guards.
He was a wealthy man, displaying from head to toe several kinds of jewellery ranging from rings to necklaces - even piercings. And was the owner of the Golden Wish Pond, the casino.
The Casino owner rubbed the side of his head with a wrinkled face, in disbelief as he stared at his underling, who stood fearfully before his desk.
He had just been given a report of a suspicious individual in his casino.
The Casino owner scratched the side of his head, his face twitching.
"And you say this person could likely be cheating...?"
The underling gulped.
"T-the person had been reported to not lose even a single time, throughout their stay here. And they had reported to have been here for about an hour, sir..."
"I see..." The Casino owner muttered, interlacing his fingers together into a net. Then, he let out a large and deep sigh of indignation.
"So, they know how to play cards, alright, fine. Just cut them off and kick them out."
For someone to win that many times and not lose once, the Casino owner had confidently assumed the individual was a skilled master with cards and manipulation.
He couldn’t let them continue.
’Strike the iron while it’s hot, as the saying goes.’
Unfortunately...
"U-uh, it wasn’t actually cards, sir."
"Huh?"
He had assumed wrong.
The underling gulped again, shaking under his boss’s intensifying stare, "T-they have reportedly been playing with our more luck-based activities, like slot machines and roulette wheels—"
BAM.
"BULLSHIT!"
The Casino owner interrupted, slamming his hand against the table in rage; his eyes were wide and filled with bewilderment.
How was something like this possible!?
Losing a large sum of money was something he had wholeheartedly prepared to face in the business; after all, no one can predict the luck of others easily.
He had been willing to let the person slide and continue playing, in hopes of winning back his losses.
However!
’To win that much in a single hour without losses, that’s absurd!’ The Casino owner shouted in his mind.
There was no way someone couldn’t lose at least once on his slot machines!
Unknown to anyone but himself and programmers, his slot machines were made so that each new person who occupied them would have their chances of winning be lowered repeatedly.
’If this report is true, then I can’t let them go on any further!’
He had big dreams!
One day, he was going to move his going to move his establishment into the inner ring, hoping to expand his pond and be able to fish in more of the bigger whales.
Right now, his power wasn’t large enough to contest with the other casino owners, who would - without a doubt - crush him the moment he set foot in that ring. So, he needed to bide his time here and use what little money the people in the middle ring had to grow his strength.
He couldn’t let his progress take setbacks because of some person’s heavenly luck!
As he recounted over his plans, he was soon pulled out of his thoughts by another jaw-dropping report.
Apparently, another person had earned a large sum of money; they also seemed to be closely related to the other individual.
The Casino owner exploded in both rage and grief at this news.
He then shouted with spit flying out of his mouth:
"GET THEM OUT OF HERE!"
...
After Lillian and Millis had cashed in their chips, they were swiftly approached and escorted out of the casino, just like the man before them, except in a more reserved and peaceful manner.
That was because they left without resistance.
Millis giggled creepily as she looked at the screen of her phone, reading the amount of money she had in her bank account.
In just an hour, she had made over two million in profit!
Unless she were to go crazy and buy various items, she doubted she would need to work a day in her life!
With a bright smile, she turned to Lillian.
"How much did ya make, Lillian?"
When Millis asked this, she had expected a response from the mask-wearing individual, who was staring directly at her. Instead, all she got back was silence.
She raised an eyebrow, tilting her head cutely with a confused look in her eyes. Then, she took a step forward - trying to peer through Lillian’s eyeholes.
Millis held her chin with a pondering expression and waved her hand in front of Lillian’s face.
"Hellooo~? Is anyone still in there?"
Knock. Knock. Knock.
Millis knocked against the forehead of Lillian’s mask before flinching and reflexively bringing her hand back, having accidentally cut herself against the sharp ridges on the [Mask of Deceit].
The Heroine frowned at this, rubbing the back of her hand and wiping away the small trickle of blood; the tiny cut seemingly disappearing soon after.
She then sighed and placed her hands on her hips.
"Welp! What to do now~..." Millis thought out loud before hearing footsteps behind her.
"Excuse me, miss, but do you have a few seconds?"
"Hm?" Millis hummed as she turned around.
...
Despite having the ability to have two parallel minds, Lillian was still easily distracted.
Opening her mouth, Lillian bit down on a fork held in front of her mouth, then chewed and swallowed as she gazed at Marionette, who was sitting beside her on a chair.
The Assassin had come down to visit her once more, this time - instead of furniture - she had brought a plate of food down.
Marionette smiled as she watched Lillian eat without any issue.
"How is it?" Marionette asked, tilting her head slightly, "Do you like it?"
Lillian raised an eyebrow, then thought about it for a second. After she asked for another bite, she came to a conclusion:
"Did you make this?"
"You can tell?" Marionette inquired with a raised eyebrow, "Does my cooking still taste peculiar, then?"
The Assassin sighed a bit in disappointment, "After we separated, there were only a few brief opportunities I had to be able to practice in the kitchen."
Lillian swallowed down the piece she was chewing and gave her an odd, but also warm look. She smiled a bit and asked:
"Could you lean in a bit?"
"Hm?" Marionette gave Lillian a puzzled look.
Only after checking that the chains were still tied around the girl did the Assassin lean in eventually.
And when she did...
Chu.
Lillian smiled warmly as she leaned away from Marionette’s cheek, having pecked it. Then, she gave a comforting reply to the Assassin’s words:
"It tastes great. The fact that you made an effort is more than enough."
Lillian giggled a bit, "And I’ll still happily eat your cooking anyway, even if it tastes bad!"
Marionette slowly held a hand over where Lillian kissed. She then slightly turned her face away from Lillian as a pink hue slowly appeared on her cheeks.
A complicated light glimmered in her eyes.
"For someone who is chained, I would’ve expected you to resent me a bit. Regardless of whether this was a punishment or not."
The Rabbit chuckled, amused by what she heard, "If you’re trying to make me resent you, then it’s impossible. But I am a bit angry at you still." Lillian pouted at the end.
Marionette smirked with a slight snort, also amused by what she heard. Then, stiffened when she felt Lillian lean her lips closer to her ear.
Lillian whispered:
"Although, I’m a bit angry, all of it will go away if you get a taste of my blood and let me out of this chair~..."
The girl still wasn’t fully convinced that Marionette had fully subdued the True Darkness.
Upon hearing this, the Assassin chuckled a bit and shook her head.
"I’ll think about it."
After that, she continued to feed Lillian what she made before leaving.
When she later returned the plate and utensils to the kitchen, Marionette continued to wander down the corridor, trying to find a specific room. And as she struggled with her poor sense of direction, she couldn’t help but think back to Lillian’s sudden closeness.
The blush she had earlier returned as her ears twitched, partially excited by the particular memory. Afterwards, she cleared her head when she finally reached the door she was looking for.
And when she did and opened it...
"Let’s return back to what we were doing, shall we?"
It was a room that could only be described as a repurposed torture chamber.
