Chapter 627: The Salesman’s Great Escape...?
Chapter 627: The Salesman’s Great Escape...?
The Salesman was left shocked and horrified at the sight of his colleagues turning into nightmarish creatures, having not expected this to happen in the slightest.
’I need to escape now!’
The Salesman immediately vanished into the shadows, swiftly moving towards the exit.
Originally, he had planned to use his colleagues as obstacles for his escape. He didn’t care for any of them, only getting along with them for the sake of the job. Thus, he didn’t hesitate even for a second to plan his escape.
After all.
’There is no way in hell I’m going to keep fighting!’
With his current injuries, his combat power had significantly decreased. Every time he moved or breathed, he could feel the shrapnel of his ribs scratching against his organs.
’Damnit, damnit, DAMNIT!’ The Salesman cursed in his mind, clutching his side with a pained look in his eyes.
Looking onwards, he continued to scurry through the shadows, trying his best to get to the exit.
This dark world that he swam through was the exact same one that Marionette used to travel through. But unlike her, who was given instant access, the Salesman had to train his abilities to even be able to enter this place.
That was another difference between the Darkness and Shadow elements.
He travelled between the legs and bodies of his disfigured colleagues.
In his eyes, these nightmarish creatures were no longer the people he knew. Although he had come across a few of them using magic, so what?!
They were now mindless creatures in his eyes! Creatures incapable of sensing his presence!
However, he knew they were strong.
Seeing that Millis was having trouble fending them off, his confidence in his escape solidified further.
’My escape is assured!’ He shouted in his mind, cackling with content.
But then...
Thwump...
’Huh?’
The Salesman paused dead in his swim, finding a wave of vibrations passed over him through the shadow sea; he sensed a disturbance.
’That shouldn’t be... only I can enter this place...!’ The Salesman thought, deeply puzzled but also slightly scared.
Although he wanted to believe his thoughts, he knew that ignorance and naivety would get someone killed. Thus, he took a glance over his left shoulder.
And luckily, he did - for when he twisted his head back, he was met with the insides of a gigantic maw.
His eyes instantly shot wide, then his survival instincts took control over his body; his body swam forward, just far enough to where—
SNAP!
—He narrowly escaped being devoured in one bite.
Swimming to the side, he looked towards the monster.
The disfigured human had a deformed head - with no hair - that resembled the broad, narrow head of a greatwhite shark; except his nose was as flat as a pig’s. He had two pairs of clawed arms, with the lower pair being extremely skinny and malnourished, and they were covered in blood.
The monster was also missing eyes, thus leading it to be blind; it could only rely on its other senses.
The Salesman gritted his teeth as fear gripped his heart. To think one of them had managed to follow him in here!
’How did this thing follow me here?!’
To even enter this place, one would need to fall into his [Dark Gate], the name of his movement spell. Could it be that he had made his [Dark Gate] too large?
Glancing up, he looked to the surface and found the entrance to his [Shadow Gate] to be crowded around by other disfigured humans; they had sniffed him out.
’The entrance is too small, there’s no possible way it could’ve just fallen in!’
Before he could think of another reason, the disfigured human swam at him with open jaws - snapping at him.
The Salesman clicked this tongue and immediately created a shadow blade.
After dodging under it, the Salesman slashed at its neck, but was then left stunned as his blade only left a deep mark on the monster’s skin.
To some, this would’ve been a good thing, but to him...
’Tough!?’
He was left befuddled.
The strength behind his swing was enough to slice through a monster, who had undergone two stages of defensive evolution.
Having been attacked, the disfigured monster instantly counterattacked with vicious speed.
The Salesman immediately leaned back and dodged by a hair’s breadth.
’Fast too!’ He shouted in his mind, his face paling even more.
As he continued to dodge and strike, he couldn’t help but feel the disfigured human’s aura had a sort of familiarity to him.
While attacking, he noticed that the darkness around him had begun to resist and push against him, smashing against his body like tides of the ocean.
Something was manipulating the darkness!
’Shit! Now I remember why this thing is so familiar!’
He remembered reading a resume of a man who had the Darkness element. At first, he was interested, but after he had learnt that the man was incapable of doing much due to his poor mana reserves, he immediately lost interest.
’So, now you’re showing your worth?!’ He hissed internally, trying to stabilise himself. Since the disfigured human’s presence, he had constantly been troubled by the darkness; was the thing using it against him!?
He clicked his tongue, then looked to the surface, finding it to be less crowded compared to before.
The Salesman was left with two options now. It was to either battle the disfigured human inside this dark world, where it had somehow claimed the advantage, or try his hand at being able to escape while being swarmed.
He gritted his teeth, weighing the pros and cons of both options.
It was only after he had narrowly dodged an attack that he finally made his decision.
He swam to the exit.
’This is the better choice!’
He swam and swam, his speed growing quickly over time. But just a metre away from the surface, he felt a clawed hand clasped around his dominant leg.
CRUNCH!
"ARGH...!"
The Salesman let out a muffled cry, fear gripping his heart even more as he watched the monster begin to devour his leg.The feeling of his muscles been gnawed through and his bones being crushed inside the monster’s powerful jaws... It was an experience he had undergone too many times.
But this was the one that left him the most fearful for his life.
With a strong will to live, the Salesman clenched his jaws and used his shadow sword to slice through his dominant leg. After managing to do that, he used the monster’s face as a platform to propel himself faster to the exit.
Swip...!
But upon exiting the dark realm—
BAM!
—He was immediately swatted out of the air, his body crashing into the corpse of a disfigured human that was killed and sent flying by Millis.
CRASH!
The Salesman crashed into a pile of steroids and drugs that were still left unharm from Lillian’s earlier attacks on the products.
"Ugh..." The Salesman groaned, his body pressed to the ground. The corpse that had crashed into him was on top of his already injured body, preventing him from being able to get up and escape.
Sure, he could travel back into the dark realm again, but then he would have to face the fiend inside. And with only one leg to swim inside, he doubted he would last long.
It was also worse that he didn’t have much mana left; he needed to reserve it for his escape.
"Get off... Get off!" The man shouted, trying to push the corpse off his body with gritted teeth; the golden tooth having long lost its shine.
Was this...
Was this how he was going to die?
"GET OFF...!"
Soon enough, the man gave up, letting out a deep breath of resignation and resentment.
If this was how he was going to go out, he should’ve at least gotten his revenge first...
’I should’ve taken a serum when I had the chance...’
As he thought this, he caught sight of a familiar syringe in the corner of his eyes - lying among the mound of drugs just like he was.
He stared at the syringe, then at the drugs, then at the scene of Lillian and Millis slaughtering the disfigured humans.
He then thought solemnly, while also cackling slightly:
’I wonder...’
Grabbing the nearest steroid, he began to inject himself.
