Chapter 666: Reduce its Lives?
Chapter 666: Reduce its Lives?
Marionette pushed out her arm and cast forth darkness, using it to wrap around the hairy arm like bandages and restraining its movements. Logically speaking, there were no benefits to fighting outside of her playing field, so how about she just bring them in?
With the strength given to her by her Trait, Marionette yanked the monster above into the dark world, revealing its form to be a gargantuan, hairy, white yeti, which struggled to break free.
It looked to be a monster that bolsters both strength and durability, given how thick its limbs looked. An enemy that would definitely give the average mage a difficult time when it came to endurance.
Luckily, Marionette wasn’t going to have that issue.
With a single command, she imbued the darkness around with its True variant and struck yeti, piercing through its heart entirely before completely eradicating its entire body with a wave.

When Marionette eventually released her control over the darkness, she grimaced and gritted her teeth.
She felt a cold and painful sensation course throughout her entire body, crawling along under her muscles, like she was infested with insects burrowing through her flesh. It was a strange sensation, and undoubtedly a painful one…
This sensation was brought by True Darkness. It had furthered its influence across her body.
Staring at the darkness in her veins, which had now reached her fingertips, Marionette furrowed her brows before diverting her gaze.
‘This pain won’t stop me.’
Although she would prefer not to rely on this power, given her situation, it was unlikely she was going to have much of a choice — True Darkness’ defence-ignoring properties were going to play a crucial role.
After Marionette recovered from the stunning wave of pain, she sensed a disturbance in the darkness around her.
She spun around and noticed a strange creature zigzagging towards her from the depths.
It was the Centipede!
Marionette quickly reacted and crushed it using the surrounding darkness.

She narrowed her eyes again. What was this Fragment she kept seeing beside the monster’s name?
‘Could this Fragment be the reason why it was able to escape death last time?’ Marionette theorised, watching as the Centipede reformed once again.
Marionette furrowed her brows. Could this monster revive under some sort of condition? And if so, what was it, and how many times could it revive?
Seeing as it was rapidly narrowing on her position, she backed off and crushed it again.
[You have slain a Prime Maw, Four-Horned Demonic Centipede Fragment]
After she destroyed it again and watched as it reformed, she noticed that it had considerably smaller. There was definitely a limit to how many times it could revive!
‘It doesn’t have a special condition to revive… but its ability is most likely something having to do with multiple lives.’
If she had to compare this centipede to its initial size, when it first kidnapped her, she would have to say it was approximately half the size it used to be!
‘I killed it three times, and since it shrank by this much, that must mean it has only 6 lives in total.’
Just three more times. She just needed to kill it three more times.
Marionette readied herself, prepared to crush it again.
But then, she found herself doubled over, now in the jaws of the Centipede, which had gotten ridiculously faster — caused by its decrease in size.
In a matter of seconds, the Centipede had dragged her out of the dark world and a dozen metres into the air, exposing her to the outside world, and also to the eyes of monsters that huddled around the dark puddle.
The Bloodhounds, who stood by these monsters, commanded the beasts to aim up at her with fury in their voice.
“OBLITERATE HER!”
One by one, the monsters below her opened their maw and began to gather an immense amount of mana in their mouths. It was clear that each one below her was at least a Prime. And with her senses, it was also clear that if she took a direct hit, she would be vaporised.
‘So, they all had decided to summon their monsters…’ Marionette then snorted. Had they now changed their mind on taking her in alive?
She then grabbed at the Centipede’s mandibles and tried to free herself. Unfortunately, even with her strength, she failed.
From how tightly it had latched around her waist, it seemed that it was going to be impossible for her to break free using brute strength alone. She needed something else.
Marionette summoned her obsidian dagger and began to slash at the Centipede, using the weapon’s enchantment to strike at its weak points.
SWISH. SWISH. SWISH.
After enduring a flurry of slashes, the strength behind its jaws loosened, allowing Marionette to swiftly release herself from its hold. Then she twisted herself around and grabbed hold of the Centipede as they fell, directing its back towards the monsters below them.
She was going to use it as a shield.
‘It still isn’t enough…’
Judging by the attack, the monsters below were charging up, and the size of the centipede, she was undoubtedly going to come out with some injuries.
‘I need to limit how much damage I’ll take.’
With that thought in mind, Marionette morphed her body into darkness and quickly reshaped herself to be smaller — small enough to where her body was now comfortably small enough to be hidden behind the Centipede.
After applying her form with one more addition, she braced for impact.
Several beams of light erupted from the maws of the monsters below, travelling through the air to reach her. And the moment they struck the Centipede’s body, Marionette was enveloped in a world of searing, hot pain.
She could feel the mana from the beams graze her dark body, vanquishing parts of her body, which she hurriedly replaced.
She must persevere!
The shadowy insect writhed in pain, harnessing all the mana it could control to reduce the damage it received, and when it couldn’t hold on, it died. But then it revived, quickly reforming before growing smaller.
This cycle repeated one more time as the monsters below eventually burned out.
And the moment they did, both Marionette and the Centipede eventually dropped to the ground.
THUD!
