Chapter 667: Understanding Darkness Further?
Chapter 667: Understanding Darkness Further?
THUD!
Upon collision with the ground, the Four-Horned Demonic Centipede laid silently still; its body twitching every so often as a dense cloud of smoke rose from its body; the shadowy aura that once draped its body was now completely gone.
It was clear that the Four-Horned Demonic Centipede was on its last life… and nearing its last breath.
The Bloodhounds neared the insect and eyed its charred body suspiciously.
“Is she dead?” One of them asked.
“She could be. But it’s best we keep up our guard, unless we want to end up like Norman.”
The memory of their comrade’s mysterious disappearance into darkness was still apparent in their minds.
Though they were unwilling to believe it, it was clear to them that the moment Marionette had dragged their comrade into the dark abyss… it was over.
“It’s best if we keep clear of the centipede in case she’s—”
“Centipede!”
In complete disregard for his comrade’s caution, one of the Bloodhounds rushed over with worry clear in his eyes — the owner of the Four-Horned Demonic Centipede.
He cradled the charred insect in his arms, much to the annoyance of his comrades.
Despite having lived for several decades and having been part of a dangerous organisation in the past, it was clear that the man had yet to fully let go of his emotions. Nor did it seem like he had let them dull much over the passing of time, evident by how passionately he held the insect’s body.
“You’re always so emotional about that thing,” One of them sneered before asking indifferently, “What’s the big deal, anyway? It still has 5 or so lives left, does it not?”
“Earlier it did… but the moment it dove into the Dark World, it suddenly lost most of its lives — having been killed three times in quick succession! Right now, my centipede is on its last life…”
Everyone widened their eyes as the word ‘Impossible’ flashed inside their mind.
To be able to kill a monster that the centipede had killed that many times, and so quickly…
Rank B monsters weren’t no pushovers, nor were they fragile toys.
‘Even if the centipede had been made to focus more on speed and mobility, that didn’t mean it should been easy to kill,’ One of them thought, baffled.
What the hell were they dealing with?
Was this the reason why the Cult of Jesters had suddenly taken an interest in the heiress of the Roselle?
Gulp.
They all simultaneously gulped.
Since Damien, or even the Butcher of Jacksmeare, they hadn’t seen anyone nearly as threatening…
“Let’s get you back in my Mana Realm for you to heal.”
The owner of the Four-Horned Demonic Centipede held his hand out and grasped the insect’s head. Then transformed it into a reflective shard before storing it away in his Mana Realm.
Given a week or two, the centipede should be fully healed by then.
When the Bloodhound moved to get up, he noticed a dark, shadowy sludge fall to the ground, which seemed to have been lying on the centipede previously.
It didn’t take long for him to recognise what it was with his vast knowledge.
He quickly dashed back.
“She’s here—!”
But before he could get far enough away, darkness suddenly shot out from the ground and severed his left arm. He let out a loud groan and unsheathed his weapon. But when he was prepared to make a counterattack, the darkness suddenly swirled and surrounded him on all sides.
“SHIT—”
Like a flower that was in the process of reversing its bloom, the darkness folded in on him.
His comrades instantly reacted, hastily moving towards his location in an attempt to rescue them.
Just as Marionette planned.
Right as they were about to reach the darkness that had caged the Bloodhound, dark tentacles suddenly lashed out at them at high speed — imbued with True Darkness.
Despite being unaware of the Corruption imbued in the darkness, the Bloodhounds sensed the immense danger from the dark tentacles and abandoned the idea of saving their comrade.
They weaved and moved through the storm of lashing tentacles, but that couldn’t be said for their monsters, as they were swiftly eviscerated by Marionette’s attacks.
[You have slain…]
[You have slain…]
[You have slain…]
With the failure to save their comrade, they watched as the cocoon that caged the Bloodhound vanished into a large puddle of darkness — entering the Dark World.
“Damnit!” One of them shouted.
They all then looked towards Marionette, who had reformed herself from the small dark sludge she had been prior.
She was in serious condition; severe burns covered most of her body, though none near her most vital areas, like her head.
She knew that reducing her size wasn’t enough to prevent life-threatening injuries, especially on the scale she had just lived through. Thus, she had employed the use of True Darkness on her body, specifically around her head and chest, which had worked out as she had hoped.
In exchange… for worsening her condition.
Feeling the crippling pain in her veins prick her mind, she gritted her teeth.
‘Unless I want to hasten the progress the Corruption has made throughout my body, I should stick to using True Darkness outside my body.’
With that now in mind, Marionette summoned a Greater Health Potion from her spatial storage and drank it in one go.
Glug. Glug. Glug.
The severe burns that had plagued her body quickly healed in under a second, along with her stamina and other physical ailments that might’ve affected her performance.
Marionette’s red eyes flashed with intimidating light.
Besides the intense pain caused by True Darkness, which dulled her mind slightly, Marionette was now back in peak condition.
The Bloodhounds grimaced when they saw this, but chose to remain calm nonetheless.
They began to whisper amongst themselves, while still keeping their focus on Marionette.
“Have one of you deduced the strangeness of her darkness yet?”
“It’s unlike anything I’ve seen before…”
“Could it be a Trait?”
“There’s no possible way! No Trait at Tier 2 could be this powerful!”
They were aware of Marionette’s background to an extent. Mainly where her strength laid and her Tier. But that didn’t matter all too much, considering they’ve deduced that her attacks seemed to destroy anything they touch, regardless of durability or material.
Was this the particular reason why the Cult of Jester wanted her? And if so… what was it that actually made her attacks so deadly?
“… I believe I may have the answer to our problems.”
