Chapter 283 – A Lovely Threat

"You didn’t have to go this far, truly." Anesthesia said with a false smile, sitting across from Emrys.

The small restaurant they were in had been fully reserved for them, making it eerily silent. Even the workers had disappeared, the food already prepared and served.

Not that Anesthesia planned to eat anyway.

The very act of looking at Emrys’s face, after Cassius’s words had reminded her of everything she’d gone through for him, robbed her of whatever appetite she might have had.

"I wanted us to speak in private." Emrys said, his voice now carrying a note of authority that hadn’t quite been there before, "and this was the only way I could think of. After all, you refused to come to my room."

"And why would I come to your room?" Anesthesia laughed incredulously, then shook her head almost immediately, "Look, Emrys, I don’t have time for this."

She leaned her elbows on the table, glaring at him with cold purple eyes,

"You’ve been pestering me for a while now, and I’ve never once answered. Are you too stupid to guess why?"

"So you’re telling me you’re ready to throw away everything we built together, just like that?" Emrys asked, his blue eyes hardening, "And stop acting like you did nothing wrong. You’ve been close to Raven this whole time. So close I’m starting to wonder if it began before we even ended things."

Anesthesia used a great deal of willpower to stop herself from cursing Emrys’s entire lineage right then.

She took a deep breath, calming her raging heart, "Fine." She hissed, locking eyes with him, "if you want to talk about my faults, let’s go all the way, Emrys."

"This is your problem, Thesia." He said, and she shuddered at the nickname, "You never admit when you’re wrong, even when you are."

"Because I’m not wrong. But even if we say I am," she tilted her head, "you know perfectly well that everything I planned with Raven was because I needed him for the Deathless Crusaders. You know I wanted the Royal Family’s support, the Prince himself, because only the Hoods have influence over them. Not you. Not even the Desdemona."

Her voice began climbing.

"You know that, Emrys! You know how hard I worked to earn that Token to become his disciple. Yet the moment I set my plan in motion, you abandoned me like I was some whore you’d met at a strip club."

Emrys shook his head, "I didn’t abandon you. You abandoned me, Thesia. And even if you were right, how did you expect me to just accept your actions?" He frowned deeply, "You think I’d sit politely and let you seduce another man, let him touch you, while you’re my girlfriend?"

"And yet I did the same for you."

"That’s not the same thing!" Emrys scowled, and Anesthesia’s expression grew colder and colder, "I’m a man, Thesia. Say whatever you like, but this kingdom implicitly allows men to have more than one wife. Why do you think nobles keep so many women?"

Anesthesia’s heart ached as she fought to hold herself together. She looked into Emrys’s blue eyes and saw nothing but a self-image so inflated it was sickening to witness.

She clenched her fists so tightly the blood drained from her palms, leaving them bone white.

Emrys continued, trying to prove he was right.

"So you can’t blame me for what I did. It’s not like I forced you, did I?" He asked at last, his voice unnervingly soft, "You chose to do it yourself. I never asked you to accept it. You did, without me saying a word."

"Yes, I was the fool." Anesthesia managed to say, her voice hoarse with wrath, shame, and boiling hatred, "I was truly the fucking bloody fool. I lowered myself for you—!"

"Thesia, you’re Tier Three." Emrys cut in wearily, "that’s your problem, you are too arrogant and too greedy for someone from a Tier Three family. That’s exactly why we’re having this conversation. All of this could have been avoided if you’d simply accepted what I gave you, the way Love does."

By this point, Emrys no longer bothered hiding his true thoughts. He didn’t feel the need to anymore.

"Oh." Anesthesia chuckled, her chest burning, "I should have accepted what you gave me, is that it?"

"Indeed."

"And what exactly did you give me?" She asked, tilting her head at an angle so unnatural it was almost eerie, "What in the hell have you ever given me, Emrys?"

"I gave you the reputation you’re still enjoying to this day. I gave you the prestige you craved and could never have earned on your own, given your background." He paused for a heartbeat, then, "I gave you my trust and my love, Thesia. And you didn’t hesitate to throw it all away. But I’m here, again, asking you to come back to me. Own your faults, just for once, and everything will be forgiven. Return to where you belong. You’re mine, Thesia. You’ve been mine since we were children."

Anesthesia was deeply regretting coming here. She wanted to laugh, and she wanted to cry too...out of anger. Out of a deep, seething hatred beginning to swell beyond anything she’d ever felt.

She hadn’t known she could hate someone this fiercely, and she was doing everything in her power not to let it show.

Oh, no. That would be too easy.

She wouldn’t give Emrys the satisfaction of seeing her fall apart because of his words.

That was exactly what he wanted. To see her vulnerable and wretched.

And it was then that Anesthesia grasped something fundamental about Emrys.

He had never truly wanted a wife, even though he believed he did. A wife was an equal, someone who stood shoulder to shoulder with you, who walked beside you until the end of the journey.

But Emrys Stormblessed saw no one as his equal. Absolutely no one.

So what he truly desired wasn’t a wife. It was a woman who would submit to his will, who’d say and do whatever he wanted to hear and see.

Nothing else. Nothing more.

Emrys Stormblessed simply wanted a slave, just one without visible chains, so the world wouldn’t judge him for it.

Anesthesia felt sick to her stomach. She genuinely had to stop herself from gagging on her empty stomach.

She compared Emrys’s behavior to Raven’s, and oh...

...it was like heaven and earth.

Raven yearned for her. He loved her so deeply, so darkly, it overwhelmed her at times.

Emrys...oh...that fucking manwhore...

’...you’re not even a man. You’re nothing but a boy in a man’s body, acting like the world owes you everything.’ She thought, venomous.

"I’m waiting, Thesia." Emrys called out again, speaking as though his victory were already assured.

With his aunt backing him, Emrys felt he had nothing to worry about.

She’d told him to trust her. And he did. Completely.

Anesthesia took a deep breath, lowered her head briefly, then lifted it again.

"I was conflicted before coming here." She said, her voice trembling beneath the surface, "No matter how hard I tried to convince myself otherwise, part of me was still attached to some of our memories. But thank you. Honestly, thank you for everything you just said to me."

She smiled a dead, empty smile.

"Now let me give you my answer. But let me phrase it as a question, Emrys."

"I’m listening." Emrys said, slowly sensing something off in her tone.

"What would happen if I woke up one day and decided to publish every message and voice recording you ever sent me about your mother?"

Emrys’s heart skipped a beat instantly. He sat bolt upright, eyes going wide.

But Anesthesia wasn’t finished.

"The recording where you told me how your mother hated you, and what you did to her. Even better, actually, you once recorded a conversation with your mother and sent it to me, because I said I needed to hear what she told you so I could comfort you properly. You told me to delete it after I listened..."

Anesthesia’s grin widened. All color drained from Emrys’s face.

"...did you really think I did?"

"Anesthesia..." Emrys’s body began to shake, his power churning inside him like a violent storm, his eyes shifting from blue to a deep, murderous black, "...Anesthesia, you would not dare!"

"Oh, Emrys, my dear," Anesthesia activated her own power in turn, the entire space around them shuddering in response, "You have no idea what I’m willing to dare, you bloody fool."

"Are you threatening me?" Emrys spoke, his voice like cracking thunder, "Me? Emrys Stormblessed? You’re threatening me??!"

The table between them burned to ash with a flick of Emrys’s finger, and the windows, floor, and even ceiling of the restaurant began to tremble as though an earthquake were approaching.

The pressure was immense, maddening, the very air itself seeming to turn against her.

But Anesthesia was the Main Heroine of the First Game, and now a Main Villainess.

She was not just anyone.

She leaned back further in her chair, crossing her left leg over her right. Then she spoke, glaring into Emrys’s fearsome black eyes with her own venomous purple ones,

"I’m not threatening you, Emrys." She said, "I’m simply telling you exactly what I’ll do if you don’t sit the fuck back down in the next three seconds."

Her smile widened into something monstrous. In that moment, she looked exactly like her sister, Isolde.

"You have two seconds left."
